  • Extending an Industrial Robot Controller-Implementation and Applications of a Fast Open Sensor Interface
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine. - 1070-9932. ; 12:3, s. 85-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many promising robotics research results were obtained during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some examples include Cartesian force control and advanced motion planning. Now, 20 years and many research projects later, many technologies still have not reached industrial usage. An important question to consider is how this situation can be improved for future deployment of necessary technologies. Today, modern robot control systems used in industry provide highly optimized motion control that works well in a variety of standard applications. To this end, computationally intensive, model-based robot motion control techniques have become standard during the last decade. While the principles employed have been known for many years, deployment in products required affordable computing power, efficientengineering tools, customer needs for productivity/performance, and improved end-user competence in the utilization of performance features. However, applications that are considered nonstandard today motivate a variety of research efforts and system development to package results in a usable form. Actually, robots are not useful for many manufacturing tasks today, in particular those found in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Reasonsinclude complex configuration, nonintuitive (for the shop floor) programming, and difficulties instructing robots to deal with variations in their environment. The latter challenge includes both task definitions and definition of motion control utilizing external sensors. The key word here is flexibility, and flexible motion control is particularly difficult since the user or system integrator needs to influence the core real-time software functions that are critical for the performance and safe operation of the system. We must find techniques that permit real-time motion controllers to be extended for new, demanding application areas.

  • Evaluation of a new X-band weather radar for operational use in south Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - : IWA Publishing. - 0273-1223 .- 1996-9732. ; 81:8, s. 1623-1635
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance of a new type of X-band Weather Radar (WR) for Sweden during a pilot run is studied. Compared to the conventional C-band WRs, the X-band WR covers a smaller area but with a higher spatiotemporal resolution, making it suitable for urban hydrological applications. Rainfall estimations from different elevation angles of the radar (levels) are compared at one-minute and single-event timescales with the observations of several rain gauges at different ranges using hyetographs. In general, the estimations aligned well with observations and the best match appeared for ranges as long as 5–10 km. Seemingly, radar estimations suffered from overshooting of lower lying showers by higher level scans in longer ranges (19–30 km) and from the reflectivity contamination due to moving objects in short ranges (<1 km). Also, the effective range of the radar dropped sharply for the moments when a cloudburst was located over the radar. Although various sources of error could affect the X-band WR rainfall estimates, higher resolution spatiotemporal rainfall monitoring for wider areas will benefit from an integration of data from a network of X-band WRs.

  • Autonomously Improving Systems in Industry : A Systematic Literature Review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Software Business. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030672911 - 9783030672928 ; 407, s. 30-45
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A significant amount of research effort is put into studying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) technologies. Real-world ML applications help companies to improve products and automate tasks such as classification, image recognition and automation. However, a traditional “fixed” approach where the system is frozen before deployment leads to a sub-optimal system performance. Systems autonomously experimenting with and improving their own behavior and performance could improve business outcomes but we need to know how this could actually work in practice. While there is some research on autonomously improving systems, the focus on the concepts and theoretical algorithms. However, less research is focused on empirical industry validation of the proposed theory. Empirical validations are usually done through simulations or by using synthetic or manually alteration of datasets. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we conduct a systematic literature review in which we focus on papers describing industrial deployments of autonomously improving systems and their real-world applications. Secondly, we identify open research questions and derive a model that classifies the level of autonomy based on our findings in the literature review.

  • Ultrasonic Detection in Robotic Environments
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Proceedings., 1996 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. - 0780329880 ; 1, s. 347-352
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on information produced by a 200 kHz ultrasonic echo device developed for robotics and other industrial purposes, a method for object identification was developed and is presented in this paper. Interpretation of the echos from the reflecting objects, complexity analysis and information extraction were made by system identification methods such as impulse response analysis and state-space realization. A clustering-type discrimination of different objects based on the echo identification result was made in a subsequent step using the least-squares method. Experimental evaluation showed that the method is effective for object recognition

  • Closed-loop System Identification of an HCCI Engine
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Advances in Automotive Control. - 0080442501 ; 37:22, s. 239-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a promising but challenging combustion engine concept. The potential for good fuel economy and low emissions is high but the transient performance required for automotive applications presents a few problems still to be solved. The focus of this work is identification of the process dynamics. An ARX type model is fitted to input-output data. A method applicable under closed-loop control is suggested and demonstrated. The resulting models are evaluated in terms of the repeatability of model characteristics, prediction accuracy, residual characteristics and comparison to spectral models is made.

  • System Identification and LQG Control of Variable-Compression HCCI Engine Dynamics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications.. - 1085-1992. - 0780386337 ; 2, s. 1442-1447
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion engine has potential to replace the spark ignition and compression ignition engines of today. One of the main problems in making the engine commercially attractive is the lack of direct means of controlling the ignition phasing. In this paper, we investigate the potential of inlet air temperature as a means to ignition actuation. This article describes a method for system identification of the HCCI process, and development of an effective LQG regulator for the combustion process, Matlab and Simulink being used in computations and simulations.

  • A digital 3D signage system and its effect on customer behavior
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The International Conference on 3D Imaging (IC3D). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479915774
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of digital signs simplifies distribution. Importantly, it draws more attention than static signs. A way to increase attention is to add an experienced depth. The paper discusses possible alternatives for extending an existing digital signage system to display stereoscopic 3D contents, comparing a decentralized distribution solution and a centralized solution. A functional prototype system was implemented. A new 3D player was developed to render views from different formats. The implemented system was used to study customer behavior when exposed to digital stereoscopic 3D signage in a direct sales situation. The proportion of sales of selected products related to the total number of sold products varied approximately equally before and during tests. An interview study suggests that the sign did not interact with customer decisions: customers were lost at different stages in this series of steps, among others the sign placement.
