  • Integrationsstrategier för utlandsfödda i detaljhandeln
  • 2017

  • The role of the employer in foreign-born worker integration
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: EURAM-conferance. (Portugal, June 2019)..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Integration of refugees in the society is one of the main problems in Europe in recent decades, accentuated by the refugee crisis in 2015. Sweden was one of the European countries that received the most refugees per capita. One of the key challenges of integration is to facilitate the entry of new arrivals in the labour market. Policy makers across Europe therefore often call for the involvement of employers to solve these problems and labour market authorities initiate various incentive schemes aiming at stimulating employers to create jobs and facilitate foreign-born workers’ entry in the labour market. However, the role of employers in facilitating entry of new arrivals in the labour market is not only unclear it also includes several problems related to the independence of firms in relation to government policies. This paper aims at providing a better understanding of how firm HR strategies both inhibit and facilitate the entry of new arrivals in the labour market. It does so by investigating the way firms in the Swedish retail industry contributes to the entry of foreign born workers in the workplace.

  • Vulnerable groups and restructuring in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report is one of 12 national reports in the VIRES project, (Vulnerable workers in Restructuring), a project funded by the European Commission, DG Employment, Social affairs and Inclusion. The aim of the project is to analyze the impact of restructuring for vulnerable workers, in particular young and foreign-born workers. Each national report identifies the impact of restructuring on vulnerable workers and the potential for different policy measures to mitigate the effects of restructuring. The financial crisis in 2008–2009 had a dramatic impact in Sweden. In October 2008 the number of announcements of redundancies increased to a level not seen since the financial crisis in 1992-1993 and continued at a high level until March 2009 when it started to decline. In this report we analyze the relationship between restructuring and the outcomes in the labor market, in particular for the most vulnerable groups. A number of questions are asked: • Who are the vulnerable workers in times of restructuring? • What is the relationship between restructuring and vulnerable workers? • What is the role of the different measures applied to manage restructuring for vulnerable workers? • What measures and policies are implemented to mitigate the negative consequences for the particular vulnerable groups?

  • Institutions and Organizations of Refugee Integration: Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Syrian Refugees in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book examines the integration experiences of refugees to Sweden from Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995), and more recently from Syria (2014-2018) - two of the largest-scale refugee movements in Europe for the last thirty years. It focuses on refugees’ interactions with key institutions of integration including language training, civic orientation, validation of previous educational experience, organizations and multiple labour market initiatives targeting refugees. Drawing on interviews with the refugees themselves, it offers a nuanced analysis of how the institutions of integration operate on a daily basis, and the effects they have on the lives of those who take part in them. The authors’ comparative approach highlights the particularities of each refugee movement while also revealing developments and persistent issues within institutions of integration in the intervening years between the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Syrian conflicts. Its conclusion, which situates the Swedish case within the broader European context, demonstrates the wider significance of this timely study. It will provide a valuable resource for policymakers in addition to students and scholars of migration studies, social policy, and public policy and business administration.

  • Migration and Polarization on the Swedish Labourmarket : Immigration and Labour Market Integration.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: University of Gothenburg. - University of Gothenburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Migration and Polarisation on the Labourmarket: patterns, mechanisms and experiences. This project is one of six projects within the six year programme: The Challenges of Polarization on the Swedish Labour Market at the Department of Sociology and Work Science funded by the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, Forte (see below for details). This project addresses the integration of migrants and minorities into the Swedish labourmarket by assessing the extent, implications and experiences of ethnic polarisation across different dimensions; that is, between majority and minority populations (first and second generations); and the diversity within the migrant workforce and its distribution across the occupational structure. Classical migration theory holds that migrants are recruited to perform jobs in the lower sections of the labour market that native workers avoid (Piore 1979; Massey et al. 1998). This also applies to Sweden, where many migrants are employed in low-wage and insecure employment (Johansson & Vingård, 2012). Comparisons of Western Europe countries have show that labour markets are polarised because ethnic minorities do not compete on equal terms with majority populations, and experience a substantial ‘ethnic penalty’ in the second generation (Heath & Cheung 2007; Johnson 2010). Given such patterns, important question arise concerning the prospects of migrants (both first and second generations) to transition into better-paid segments of the labour market and what strategies migrants develop to reduce the impact of discrimination (Modood 2015; Elgenius 2017). Sweden is considered one of the most gendered labour markets in the world (Charles & Grusky 2004) and intersections of ethnicity and gender need be considered as a ‘double disadvantage’ (Bradley & Healy 2008). However, the tendency towards polarisation within the migrant workforce is another focus for this project as diversity-within is visible with an increasing share of highly skilled migrants in Sweden; for example, computing professionals from India. Thus, the fact that migrant groups are unevenly distributed across the occupational structure requires further attention. For instance, the largest share of migrants within the construction sector is from Eastern Europe, whereas Indian nationals are concentrated in the IT sector (Migrationsverket). This project will critically appraise migrants’ occupational status, prospects and experiences in the Swedish labour market by focusing on diversity within the migrant workforce and the experiences of ethnic penalties in first and second generations (see, e.g., Elgenius 2011, 2017; Frank 2012, 2014; Omanović 2009, 2013, Knights and Omanović 2016). • Transmitted inequalities?: The second generation and migration history penalties on the Swedish labour market
  • 2024

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter examines the mobility patterns of the early careers (20–24-year-olds) in the Swedish labour market with a migration history often referred to as the second-generation. The various pathways and career trajectories for members of this group are outlined across immigrant populations of the first and second generations and compared to the outcomes of individuals born in Sweden without a migration history. Our analysis is based on register data (LISA) and the mobility patterns of the 20–24-year-olds outlined over a 10-year period (2005 to 2014). Our findings show that, despite investments in education and the active agency of behalf of the second generation, most of the early careers of the second-generation, apart from the Nordic groups, experience different degrees of unequal chances and penalties on the Swedish labour market, including a higher risk of being unemployed and having lower earnings. We conclude that disadvantages are transferred from the first to the second generation can be conceptualised as a migration history penalty (MHP).

  • (Mis) Managing Diversity: Exploring the Dangers of Diversity Management Orthodoxy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal. - 2040-7149. ; 35:1, s. 5-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to challenge the dominance of the mainstream discourse and practice of diversity management (DM) by identifying and problematizing three distinct but related issues that it encompasses: first, its tendency to displace all alternative approaches; second, its general neglect of the social-historical context and third, its almost exclusive focus on the business case rationale for supporting diversity. Design/methodology/approach – Employing ethnographic research methods, the empirical material was collected in an international manufacturing corporation based in Sweden. It consists of three different, but interconnected approaches: archival research, interviews and observations. Findings – The paper shows that in neglecting power, identity, intersectionality and the changing socio-historical context of diversity, a well-meaning corporate diversity programme tended to obscure ethnic and age-related disadvantages at work. Research limitations/implications – The limitations of this research relate largely to its dependence on a single case study and the limited focus on diversity as it affected able-bodied, white male immigrant workers. A broader study of the multiplicity of types of discrimination and ways in which diversity is managed in a range of countries and organizations could facilitate a more in-depth exploration of these issues and arguments. Originality/value – Although not entirely new, the three arguments that have been drawn upon to discuss, analyse and illustrate DM through our data have rarely been brought together in one theoretical and empirical study.
