  • Transforming Practice : Checklists for Delivering Change
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Transforming Conservation : A Practical Guide to Evidence and Decision Making - A Practical Guide to Evidence and Decision Making. - 9781800648562 - 9781800648586 ; , s. 367-386
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delivering a revolution in evidence use requires a cultural change across society. For a wide range of groups (practitioners, knowledge brokers, organisations, organisational leaders, policy makers, funders, researchers, journal publishers, the wider conservation community, educators, writers, and journalists), options are described to facilitate a change in practice, and a series of downloadable checklists is provided.

  • Evolution of biomarker research in autoimmunity conditions for health professionals and clinical practice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Precision medicine. - : Elsevier. - 9780323997843 ; , s. 219-276
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Medical abzymology has made a great contribution to the development of general autoimmunity theory: it has put the autoantibodies (Ab) as the key brick of the theory to the level of physiological functionality by providing such Ab with the ability to catalyze and mediate direct and independent cytotoxic effect on cellular and molecular targets. Natural catalytic autoantibodies (abzymes) while being a pool of canonical Abs and possessing catalytic activity belong to the new group of physiologically active substances whose features and properties are evolutionary consolidated in one functionally active biomolecule. Therefore, further studies on Ab-mediated autoAg degradation and other targeted Ab-mediated proteolysis may provide biomarkers of newer generations and thus a supplementary tool for assessing the disease progression and predicting disability of the patients and persons at risks. This chapter is a summary of current knowledge and prognostic perspectives toward catalytic Abs in autoimmunity and thus some autoimmune clinical cases, their role in pathogenesis, and the exploitation of both whole molecules and their constituent parts in developing highly effective targeted drugs of the future to come, and thus the therapeutic protocols being individualized.

  • The Manyikeni and Chibuene Archaeological Sites, Mozambique : Prospects for their Conservation and Management
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Other landscapes of cultural heritage(s). - Coimbra : Coimbra University Press. - 9789892623320 - 9789892623313 ; , s. 319-339
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper outlines the history of research and heritage management of Manyikeni (a Zimbabwe tradition site dated 1200-1700 AD) and the trading station of Chibuene (dated from 400-present). Both sites are located in the District of Vilankulos, in Inhambane Province of Southern Mozambique. Archaeological work has been conducted at both sites since the 1970s with significant participation of local residents and researchers from Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo and external researchers. The paper discusses heritage measures for these two sites including also a newly reported stone enclosure (Zimbabwe) of Ngomene, in Vilankulos, c.56.7km south of Chibuene. We also discuss the heritage and cultural tourism potential of the area in terms of proximity to the marine national park of Bazaruto, for a sustainable heritage conservation program in the wider processes of socio-economic development. We use the Urban Historic Landscape, or HUL approach associated with the notion of the living heritage to meet community needs. This is reinforced by the recently adopted marine cultural heritage approach of the Rising from the Depths Network in Eastern Africa, aiming to benefit communities, living specifically on the coast. The paper argues for an integrated biocultural heritage approach for sustainable conservation through the establishment of “Archaeological Parks” and exemplifies efforts towards these goals on the sites and the possibilities for such an endeavor in the current national cultural and natural legislation.

  • Hilpinen's Theory of Inquiry
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Agency, Norms, Inquiry, and Artifacts : Essays in Honor of Risto Hilpinen - Essays in Honor of Risto Hilpinen. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2542-8292 .- 0166-6991. - 9783030907495 - 9783030907518 - 9783030907488 ; 454, s. 175-191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Risto Hilpinen’s name is associated with seminal contributions to many areas of analytic philosophy, including influential work on deontic logic and the theory of artifacts, as well as important early investigations into inductive logic and indefeasibility analyses of knowledge. A somewhat lesser known body of Hilpinen’s work concerns the theory of inquiry, whereby the central questions are how to conceptualize and understand human investigations from a general epistemological perspective. The present contribution traces the development of Hilpinen’s theory of inquiry through his main contributions to the topic in the 1980s and 1990s with special attention to how the problems in the initial formulation of the theory were eventually given more detailed and convincing solutions.

  • Excavations on Roman pottery kiln sites in Cantley Parish, South Yorkshire, 1956–1975
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Roman Pottery Studies Volume 19. - : Oxbow Books. - 9781789258264 - 9781789258257 ; , s. 44-146
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The South Yorkshire Roman pottery industry is concentrated largely in the parish of Cantley, immediately south-east ofDoncaster, the site of the fort and associated settlement of Danvm. Over seventy kilns, lying either side of the Lincolnto York via Castleford road, have been located, of which 55 have been excavated. This report deals with the remainingunpublished material, that from Cantley Kilns 30–32, 35–36 and 40–44. The earliest excavated kilns belong to themid-second century and production continued at least until the mid-fourth century. Material from Doncaster and othersites, however, suggests that earlier local late first and early second century production centres remain to be identified.Kiln types range from surface-built with removable furniture, to more substantial deeply excavated types with survivinginternal structures, including radial firebars over single and double pedestals, to more massive permanent floors overup to four pedestals. The products include mortaria, beakers, cooking pots/jars and bowls. White slip is employed onmortaria and red and white paint occurs on a few other vessels. Most of the material is in a hard gritty fabric producedin both light grey and red oxidised forms with varying degrees of burnishing. The mortaria have Mancetter/Hartshillaffinities which appear evident even after the demise of stamping by SARRIVS and others, and the cooking pots andbowls, reflect the general trend of Black-burnished ware production, although the latest forms do not occur. Threetypes, lid-seated jars, wide-mouthed/shouldered bowls and large bowls/pancheons of truncated conical form, belongto different, perhaps Continental traditions. Whilst most of the material appears to have been marketed locally, a fewvessels travelled further, particularly in the mid-second century, when Rossington Bridge, on the southern edge of theindustry, was involved in supply to the Antonine Wall.
