  • IceCube search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A

    •  GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) ever observed. The observed extremelyhigh flux of high and very-high-energy photons provide a unique opportunity to probe the predictedneutrino counterpart to the electromagnetic emission. We have used a variety of methods to searchfor neutrinos in coincidence with the GRB over several time windows during the precursor, promptand afterglow phases of the GRB. MeV scale neutrinos are studied using photo-multiplier ratescalers which are normally used to search for galactic core-collapse supernovae neutrinos. GeVneutrinos are searched starting with DeepCore triggers. These events don’t have directionallocalization, but instead can indicate an excess in the rate of events. 10 GeV - 1 TeV and >TeVneutrinos are searched using traditional neutrino point source methods which take into accountthe direction and time of events with DeepCore and the entire IceCube detector respectively. The>TeV results include both a fast-response analysis conducted by IceCube in real-time with timewindows of T0 − 1 to T0 + 2 hours and T0 ± 1 day around the time of GRB 221009A, as well asan offline analysis with 3 new time windows up to a time window of T0 − 1 to T0 + 14 days, thelongest time period we consider. The combination of observations by IceCube covers 9 ordersof magnitude in neutrino energy, from MeV to PeV, placing upper limits across the range forpredicted neutrino emission.

  • Biogeochemical interpretations of colored dissolved organic matter optical signatures (invited)

    • The optical properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in surface waters are visible from space and observable throughout the water column in real time using in situ sensors. Due to their ease of measurement, CDOM optical properties are used as proxies for the quantity, quality and processing of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters. This talk will focus upon the use of these optical signatures to provide insight into the cycling of DOM. Examples will include the use of color to estimate quantitative fluxes and the molecular composition of organics in natural waters.

  • Search for Isovector Valence-Shell Excitations in 140Nd and 142Sm via Coulomb excitation reactions of radioactive ion beams

    • Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+ 3 → 2+ 1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+ 1;ms states.

    • We describe the impact of atomic spectroscopy on astrophysics and future requirements for atomic data. These requirements cannot be met with current levels of funding for laboratory astrophysics. The situation could be substantially improved with relatively small investment from the funding agencies.

  • A Middleware Approach to Dynamically Configurable Automotive Embedded Systems

    • This paper presents an advanced dynamically configurable middleware for automotive embedded systems. The layered architecture of the middleware, and the way in which core and optional services provide transparency and flexible platform independent support for portability, is described. The design of the middleware is positioned with respect to the way it overcomes the specific technical, environmental, performance and safety challenges of the automotive domain. The use of policies to achieve flexible run-time configuration is explained with reference to the core policy technology which has been extended and adapted specifically for this project. The component model is described, focussing on how the configuration logic is distributed throughout the middleware and application components, by inserting ‘decision points’ wherever deferred logic or run-time context-sensitive configuration is required. Included in this discussion are the way in which context information is automatically provided to policies to inform context-aware behaviour; the dynamic wrapper mechanism which isolates policies, provides transparency to software developers and silently handles run-time errors arising during dynamic configuration operations.

  • Innovation, Breakthroughs & Disruptive Knowledge : Evidence from Science & Scientists

    • Organizations crucially rely on knowledge and innovation. It represents the commercial potential of firms’ research and development (R&D) activities (Katila and Shane 2005) and is thus a source of competitive advantage and profits (Utterback 1994). Further, scientific methods can be applied to processes of creative search within organizations to create new business opportunities (Li et al. 2013; Rosenberg and Nelson 1994). Innovative products may open new markets and drive long-run economic growth (Hasan and Tucci 2010), and novel research may open new paradigms and fields and lead to scientific breakthroughs (Kuhn 1962). Breakthrough inventions create “Schumpeterian rents” (Schumpeter 1939), on which the entry, growth and survival of firms hinge. Yet, innovation is invariably unpredictable (Katila and Chen 2008). Novel products, processes and theories are developed through an inherently complex and ambiguous process. The path to an innovation is a tortuous one, ripe with dead- ends and pitfalls, and the scientific, technical, and commercial promise of an innovation is rarely understood in advance. At the heart of these search paths lies a tension: knowledge is built cumulatively (Merton 1973) and the search for innovation inherently relies on this wealth, yet innovative knowledge breaks with prior work (Hargadon and Sutton 1997; Uzzi et al. 2013a). What is the cartography of those search paths? Does divergence from mainstream knowledge implies low reliance on prior work? How can external audiences evaluating innovation influence these search paths, at times in biased ways? How can innovators find breakthroughs in well-defined but understudied technological spaces? These questions are important to craft strategy processes for managers and resources allocation for policymakers. To answer them, we turn to science (and scientists) as one of the prime search spaces for innovation and breakthroughs. This presenter symposium will assemble four papers on search, innovation, and breakthroughs to further our understanding of these topics.

  • Coulomb excitation of pear-shaped nuclei

    • There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Isotopes of both radon and radium have been identified as candidates for such measurements. Here, we have observed the low-lying quantum states in 224Rn and 226Rn by accelerating beams of these radioactive nuclei. We show that radon isotopes undergo octupole vibrations but do not possess static pear-shapes in their ground states. We conclude that radon atoms provide less favourable conditions for the enhancement of a measurable atomic electric-dipole moment.

    • A model of the effect of turbulence generating vanes and its location in a planar contraction for predicting fibre orientation distribution is proposed. Simultaneously with CFD simulations and with experimental data, the non-dimensional rotational dispersion coefficient has been determined for the extended 1D headbox model. Furthermore the behavior of turbulence generating vanes types, i.e. blunt and tapered, and the location of such has been studied. For different streamlines in the contracting channel, the one dimensional fibre orientation distribution model is solved, and the fibre orientation distribution is studied along streamlines near the vane wall and vane tip and further away. The model reveals the effect of the vane tip and the wall boundary layer on fibre orientation distribution. The boundary layer will for both in the plane of paper and in the plane of contraction wider the fibre orientation distributions, i.e the fibres will be less oriented. For the outlet profile of the contraction the fibre orientation distribution will be more effected by the blunt vane tip than the tapered vane tip. The model is validated with experimental results in literature and a good qualitatively agreement was archived.

    • While robots have been popular as a tool for STEM teaching, the use of robots in other learning scenarios is novel. The field of HRI has started to report on how to make effective robots usable in educational contexts. However, many challenges remain. For instance, which interaction strategies aid learning, and which hamper learning? How can we deal with the current technical limitations of robots? Answering these and other questions requires a multidisciplinary effort, including contributions from pedagogy, developmental psychology, (computational) linguistics, artificial intelligence and HRI, among others. This abstract provides a brief overview of the current state-of-the-art in social robots designed for learning and describes the aims of the Robots for Learning (R4L) workshop in bringing together a multidisciplinary audience for furthering the development of market-ready educational robots.
