  • Bioconda: A sustainable and comprehensive software distribution for the life sciences
  • 2017
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present Bioconda (https://bioconda.github.io), a distribution of bioinformatics software for the lightweight, multi-platform and language-agnostic package manager Conda. Currently, Bioconda offers a collection of over 3000 software packages, which is continuously maintained, updated, and extended by a growing global community of more than 200 contributors. Bioconda improves analysis reproducibility by allowing users to define isolated environments with defined software versions, all of which are easily installed and managed without administrative privileges.

  • Physical damage mechanisms for uniform wear calculation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Contact Mechanics and Wear of Rail/wheel Systems, CM 2018. - Delft, The Netherlands.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work presents the initial steps given in order to obtain a comprehensive physical model for the specific case of wheel rail contact, which would be able to relate contact conditions, material properties and wear rates. The main advantage of a physical damage wear model is that wheelset an rail manufacturers can perform simulations in order to improve and optimize material properties for different operational cases. The initial work has focused on delaminative wear, starting with the importance and modelling of rough contact, and a comparison against classic smooth contact models.

  • Inclusive Waste Governance and Grassroots Innovations for Social, Environmental And Economic Change
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Participants of two research projects (Recycling Networks: Grassroots resilience tackling climate, environmental and poverty challenges (funded by the Swedish Research Council) and Mapping Waste Governance (funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) collaborate in offering a critical inter- and transdisciplinary perspective on waste and waste actors (waste picker cooperatives, associations, community-based organizations, partnerships, networks and NGOs). The research is conducted in the following cities: Buenos Aires (Argentina), São Paulo (Brazil), Vancouver and Montreal (Canada), Kisumu (Kenya), Managua (Nicaragua) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). Together we examine the challenges that innovative grassroots initiatives and networks encounter in generating livelihoods to improve household waste collection and recycling, particularly in informal settlements of global South cities. We seek to map waste governance and successful waste management initiatives, arrangements and policies involving grassroots initiatives. In this report, we present a brief description of solid waste governance in the cities where we conducted fieldwork. We then illuminate some of our findings on grassroots innovations involving waste pickers or waste workers in these cities. Both research projects combine multi-case studies of waste picker groups and local government initiatives, apply qualitative research tools and participatory action research (e.g. photo voice, participant observation, workshops, surveys and interviews). We are interested in understanding processes, challenges and opportunities related to how these grassroots initiatives and networks operate to bring about socio-environmental and economic change? How they address challenges and what the assets are in everyday waste governance that can be explored to make waste governance more sustainable and thus more inclusive? Researchers involved in these two projects, key stakeholders from grassroots initiatives in these countries, representatives from some international waste picker networks and local and regional government officials from Kisumu, Kenya, met between 23rd and 29th of April 2018, in Kisumu to present and discuss the results of the first year of research activities, which are herewith documented.

  • Eruptive Styles at the Teide Volcanic Complex
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Teide Volcano. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. ; , s. 213-231
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The wide variety of volcanic products composing the Teide VolcanicComplex (TVC) reflects an unusual assemblage of eruptive styles, with awide range of phenomena represented and only plinian and phreato-plinian styles truly lacking. This diversity is due to spatial and temporalvariations in magma composition (mafic magmas of the rift zones andfelsic magmas of the central edifice), variable magmatic volatile contentsand the interaction of magma with external water (snow, groundwater,etc.). Overall, strombolian eruptions are the most frequent eruptive styleat the TVC. Explosive eruptions of felsic material tend to be of lowvolume, for example, the largest explosive event during the Holocene, Montaña Blanca (ca. 2 ka), produced*0.2 km3DRE of phonoliticpumice during an eruptive sequence that reached explosivity of sub-plinian magnitude. Examples of phreatomagmatic activity (surge depos-its) have been described both on the northern flanks of Teide volcano aswell as from the summit area of Pico Viejo volcano. Until now moststudies on volcanic hazard assessment have focussed on ash fall and lavaflow hazards in the Canary Islands, but phreatomagmatic eruptions andtheir potential effects may have to be seriously considered as well.

  • Structural design of natural plant based foods to promote nutritional quality
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Trends in Food Science and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-2244 .- 1879-3053. ; 24:1, s. 47-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During traditional industrial processing of fruit and vegetable derived foods, consideration of the eventual retention, bio-accessibility or bio-availability of nutrients has hitherto been a secondary priority. Indeed standard processing of soups and sauces involves treating all ingredients in a similar way, usually by prolonged heat treatment and results in both lowered nutritional value and sensory quality of food products. Such products are typically structured using various additives including starches, gums and stabilizers, which consumers regard as unnatural, rather than exploiting the endogenous structuring potential of the fruit and vegetable ingredients as available at the farm gate. Recent studies undertaken within the EU sponsored 'Healthy Structuring' project have shown how to design an industrially manufactured product with good sensory qualities that is natural and nutritious. The strategy has been to use the inherent structural and nutritional properties of the raw material ingredients, on the one hand to ensure the textural quality of the final product without the use of artificial gums or stabilizers and, on the other hand to optimize the nutritional quality of the final product. This review briefly summarizes both the approach taken and the results obtained within the project.
