  • Landscape, climate, sea-level variations and human living conditions in a coastal area of western Blekinge on the Baltic sea between 11600 cal BP and AD 1000 : E22- Sölvesborg-Stensnäs-project members 2014
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the project has been to reveal the living conditionsfor humans in a coastal area of the Baltic sea during thirteen thousand years and to study the implications of variations in climate, sea-level and landscape changes. The archaeological ex- cavations, well integrated with paleoecological studies, along a twenty kilometer new road-built between Sölvesborg and Stensnäs has resulted in unique findings which shed new light on to the human history in southern Scandinavia and adjust- ment of the sea-level curve in western Blekinge. Time periods from early mesolithic, neolithic, bronze age until late iron age are well represented at the sites along the former bay and lake Vesan. Macrofossil analysis of the plant material at the archae- ological sites has revealed the food resources, burial gifts and given a glimpse of the local environment. Sediment cores from the center and near shore of former lake Vesan has given the opportunity to reconstruct the aquatic conditions and vegeta- tion in the surrounding landscape based on analysis of diatoms, pollen, macrofossils and carbon content. The vast number of radiocarbon dates of the archaeological material from various altitudes at the sites has enabled adjustment of the sea-level curve especially during Ancylus-, Littorina transgressions and aregression around 8.2 ka.

  • Small pieces of flint : Mesolithic contact patterns on the Småland highlands in south Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Solna : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 114:4, s. 201-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text discusses a small assemblage of flint from an excavation of a Mesolithic site in the Småland highlands dated to c. 9.200 cal BP. Flint does not occur naturally in the area and the flint assemblage was brought to the site from the coast, about 45 kilometres to the west. The ambition of the study was to analyse a Mesolithic site with few and fragmented artefacts . By means of analyses of distribution patterns and detailed analyses of reduction processes and use-wear analysis it could be established that a variety of tasks had been performed at the site. The distribution of burnt flint together with there mains of a hut demonstrate that the site was spatially organized. Even though the number of flint pieces from the site is small, there are no indications that the find material is the result of short visits on the site. Instead, it is more likely a place that was used for stays of some duration. The use of non-local raw material indicates mobility and contact patterns that links present day west coast of Halland and south-east Scandinavia (Skåne and the Danish islands), with the Småland highland and the Markaryd area at the time of the settlement. The technological analys is indicates that stays in the inland lasted long enough to force the group to use and curate the flint tools in a careful way to make them last. But the visits were not so long that locally available raw materials, as for example quartz, had to be used. A general conclusion to be drawn from the result is that the number of lithic pieces in an assemblage, is not in proportion to the interpretative potential of a site.

  • Den hemliga sjön – en resa till det småländska inlandet för 9 000 år sedan
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis is based on the excavation of a Stone Age site approximately 9,300 years old located in the south Swedish inland. Although the site delivered very few finds it was a site of considerable potential merit. The landscape in the forested region was to a considerable extent untouched by human activity. As there were no natural deposits of flint in the area, all flint had been brought to the site from the coast. A GIS-based analysis enabled small concentrations of finds to be identified and analyzed. The analysis included both technological interpretations and use-wear analyses. The results of these analyses showed that many different tasks were carried out on the site although almost no tools or blades were produced at the site. All flints found were the remnants of sharpening and retouching, consciously discarded or lost. An analysis of the 14C-datings from other sites showed that the inland was only visited sporadically during the first few millennia after the end of the ice age. There are no data which indicate permanent settlement in the inland during the Mesolithic. The inland was thus not colonized in the conventional sense. It was not a linear process and different areas acquired different significances during different periods. The motivation to explore the inland was not primarily ecological or economical. Instead the landscape was analyzed from a social perspective. The starting point was Maurice Bloch's description of man's ability to assume various societal roles and give their environment a social dimension. From this perspective, the landscape, journeys and animals were all various aspects of the same social phenomenon. Keeping this fundamental pre-requisite in mind, the author goes on to analyze the landscape from several different perspectives. Taking his inspiration from Claude Lévi-Strauss, he compares the interior of the country and the coast from a structural perspective, stating that one possible reason for visiting the interior was that it provided a direct contrast to people's everyday life on the coast. People's desire to change and expand their social roles inevitably led them to move between the inland and the coast.

  • 2019
