  • Particle composition and size distribution in coal flames - The influence on radiative heat transfer
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0894-1777 .- 1879-2286. ; 64, s. 70-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiative heat transfer in a 77 kWth swirling lignite flame has been studied. The aim is to characterize different particle types present in a coal flame and to determine their influence on the radiative heat transfer. The study combines extractive particle measurements, radiative intensity measurements and detailed radiation modelling. The size distribution of the extracted particles was measured with a low pressure impactor and some of the size fractions were analysed with SEM–EDX. The measured total radiative intensity is compared with the modelled intensity based on the particle measurements in the same cross-section of the flame. The particle properties were calculated with Mie theory and the gas properties with a statistical narrow-band model. The results show that the contribution of coal/char particles dominates the radiative heat transfer in the investigated cross-section of the flame. The methodology applied in this work shows promising results for characterization of particle radiation in flames of practical size.

  • An optimization model for refinery production scheduling
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - Amsterdam, Netherlands : Elsevier. - 0925-5273 .- 1873-7579. ; 78:3, s. 255-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we describe a production planning and scheduling problem in an oil refinery company. The problem concerns the planning and the utilization of a production process consisting of one distillation unit and two hydro-treatment units. In the process crude oil is transformed to bitumen and naphthenic special oils. The aim of the scheduling is to decide which mode of operation to use in each processing unit at each point in time, in order to satisfy the demand while minimizing the production cost and taking storage capacities into account. The production cost includes costs for changing mode and for holding inventory. We formulate a mixed integer linear programming model for the scheduling problem. The model can be regarded as a generalized lot-sizing problem, where inventory capacities are considered and more than one product is obtained for some modes of operation. A number of modifications and extensions of the model are also discussed. It is shown how the optimization model can be used as a viable tool for supporting production planning and scheduling at the refinery, and that it is possible to analyze scheduling scenarios of realistic sizes. It is also shown that the model can support shipment planning and strategic decisions concerning new products and investments in storage capacity. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Medical and licit drug use in an urban/rural study population with refugee background, 7-8 years into resettlement
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: GMS Psycho-Social-Medicine. - 1860-5214. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Research into medical and licit drug use in resettled refugee populations is scarce, despite the fact that mental health status often has been found to be poorer than in general populations. Hence the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of self-rated use of medicine and licit drugs among adults who came to Sweden from Bosnia-Herzegovina (1993/94) and who in 2001 were living in either an urban (low employment context) or a rural (high employment context) region (n=4185).Methods: Prevalence was estimated from a cross-sectional questionnaire distributed to a representative sample (n=650) in 2001 (63.5% response rate). Results: The study population estimates of usage of sedatives (26.5%), sleeping tablets (26.2%) and antidepressants (22.3%) did not differ by gender but did so by region, with a higher urban prevalence. The consumption of alcohol (5.1%) and cigarettes (41.0%) did not differ by region but men reported higher alcohol consumption than women. Conclusion: The high consumption of medicine (compared with general populations) raises the question of treatment efficiency and the need for public health attention and evaluation many years after resettlement. Factors to consider for further research with analytic prerequisites concern indications that regional differences may be influenced, not only by urban employment being lower but also by urban/rural differences in prescription rates and/or access to health care; moreover, there might have been a selection to the urban region of older people, with a more vulnerable family situation, and/or poorer mental health. Finally, the overall alcohol (low) and cigarettes (high) consumption in the study population followed prevalence patterns found in Bosnia-Herzegovina rather than in Sweden.

  • Retrospective Cohort Study of Bronchial Doses and Radiation-Induced Atelectasis After Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy of Lung Tumors Located Close to the Bronchial Tree
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-3016 .- 1879-355X. ; 87:3, s. 590-595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To evaluate the dose-response relationship between radiation-induced atelectasis after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and bronchial dose. Methods and Materials: Seventy-four patients treated with SBRT for tumors close to main, lobar, or segmental bronchi were selected. The association between incidence of atelectasis and bronchial dose parameters (maximum point-dose and minimum dose to the high-dose bronchial volume [ranging from 0.1 cm(3) up to 2.0 cm(3)]) was statistically evaluated with survival analysis models. Results: Prescribed doses varied between 4 and 20 Gy per fraction in 2-5 fractions. Eighteen patients (24.3%) developed atelectasis considered to be radiation-induced. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the incidence of radiation-induced atelectasis and minimum dose to the high-dose bronchial volumes, of which 0.1 cm(3) (D-0.1cm3) was used for further analysis. The median value of D-0.1cm3 (alpha/beta = 3 Gy) was EQD(2,LQ) = 147 Gy(3) (range, 20-293 Gy(3)). For patients who developed atelectasis the median value was EQD(2,LQ) = 210 Gy(3), and for patients who did not develop atelectasis, EQD(2,LQ) = 105 Gy(3). Median time from treatment to development of atelectasis was 8.0 months (range, 1.1-30.1 months). Conclusion: In this retrospective study a significant dose-response relationship between the incidence of atelectasis and the dose to the high-dose volume of the bronchi is shown.

  • Immobilization of the first dimension in 2D blue native/SDS-PAGE allows the relative quantification of membrane proteomes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Methods. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9130 .- 1046-2023. ; 46:2, s. 48-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In biological membranes many proteins are organized in complexes. The method of choice for the global analysis of the subunits of these complexes is two-dimensional blue native (2D BN)/SDS–PAGE. In the 1st dimension complexes are separated by BN-PAGE, and in the 2nd dimension their subunits are resolved by SDS–PAGE. In the currently available protocols the 1st dimension BN gel lanes get distorted during their transfer to the 2nd dimension separation gels. This leads to low reproducibility and high variation of 2D BN/SDS-gels, rendering them unsuitable for comparative analysis. We have developed a 2D BN/SDS–PAGE protocol where the 1st dimension BN gel is cast on a GelBond PAG film. Immobilization prevents distortion of BN gel lanes, which lowers variation and greatly improves reproducibility of 2D BN/SDS-gels. 2D BN/SDS–PAGE with an immobilized 1st dimension was used for the comparative analysis of the cytoplasmic membrane proteomes of Escherichia coli cells overexpressing a membrane protein and to create a 2D BN/SDS–PAGE reference map of the E. coli cytoplasmic membrane proteome with 143 identified proteins from 165 different protein spots.

  • Consequences of the overexpression of a eukaryotic membrane protein, the human KDEL receptor, in Escherichia coli
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 407:4, s. 532-542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Escherichia coli is the most widely used host for producing membrane proteins. Thus far, to study the consequences of membrane protein overexpression in E. coli, we have focussed on prokaryotic membrane proteins as overexpression targets. Their overexpression results in the saturation of the Sec translocon, which is a protein-conducting channel in the cytoplasmic membrane that mediates both protein translocation and insertion. Saturation of the Sec translocon leads to (i) protein misfolding/aggregation in the cytoplasm, (ii) impaired respiration, and (iii) activation of the Arc response, which leads to inefficient ATP production and the formation of acetate. The overexpression yields of eukaryotic membrane proteins in E. coli are usually much lower than those of prokaryotic ones. This may be due to differences between the consequences of the overexpression of prokaryotic and eukaryotic membrane proteins in E. coli. Therefore, we have now also studied in detail how the overexpression of a eukaryotic membrane protein, the human KDEL receptor, affects E. coli. Surprisingly, the consequences of the overexpression of a prokaryotic and a eukaryotic membrane protein are very similar. Strain engineering and likely also protein engineering can be used to remedy the saturation of the Sec translocon upon overexpression of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic membrane proteins in E. coli.

  • A Tabu Search Heuristic for Scheduling the Production Processes at an Oil Refinery
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 42:3, s. 445-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a tabu search heuristic which can be used for scheduling the production at an oil refinery. The scheduling problem is to decide which production modes to use at the different processing units at each point in time. The problem is a type of lot-sizing problem where costs of changeovers, inventories and production are considered. In the suggested tabu search heuristic we explore the use of variable neighbourhood, dynamic penalty and different tabu lists. Computational results are presented for different versions of the heuristic and the results are compared to the best-known lower bound for a set of scheduling scenarios.
