  • Structural, electrical, and mechanical properties of nc-TiC/a-SiC nanocomposite thin films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B. - 1071-1023 .- 1520-8567. ; 23:6, s. 2486-2495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have synthesized Ti–Si–C nanocomposite thin films by dc magnetron sputtering from a Ti3SiC2 compound target in an Ar discharge on Si(100), Al2O3(0001), and Al substrates at temperatures from room temperature to 300  °C. Electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the films consisted of nanocrystalline (nc-) TiC and amorphous (a-) SiC, with the possible presence of a small amount of noncarbidic C. The growth mode was columnar, yielding a nodular film-surface morphology. Mechanically, the films exhibited a remarkable ductile behavior. Their nanoindentation hardness and E-modulus values were 20 and 290  GPa, respectively. The electrical resistivity was 330  µ  cm for optimal Ar pressure (4  mTorr) and substrate temperature (300  °C). The resulting nc-TiC/a-SiC films performed well as electrical contact material. These films' electrical-contact resistance against Ag was remarkably low, 6  µ at a contact force of 800  N compared to 3.2  µ for Ag against Ag. The chemical stability of the nc-TiC/a-SiC films was excellent, as shown by a Battelle flowing mixed corrosive-gas test, with no N, Cl, or S contaminants entering the bulk of the films.

  • Deposition and characterization of ternary thin films within the Ti–Al–C system by DC magnetron sputtering
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Crystal Growth. - 0022-0248 .- 1873-5002. ; 291:1, s. 290-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of ternary compounds within the Ti–Al–C system was studied by magnetron sputtering for thin-film deposition and first-principles calculations for phase stability. As-deposited films were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hardness and Young's moduli of the material were studied by nanoindentation. Epitaxial and phase-pure films of Mn+1AXn phases Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC as well as the perovskite phase Ti3AlC were deposited on Al2O3(00ℓ) wafers kept at temperatures between 800 and 900 °C. The only ternary phases observed at low temperatures (300 °C) were Ti3AlC and cubic (Ti,Al)C, the latter can be described as a metastable solid solution of Al in TiC similar to the more studied (Ti,Al)N system. The difficulties to form MAX phases at low substrate temperatures were attributed of requirement for a sufficient diffusivity to partition the elements corresponding to the relatively complex crystal structures with long c-axes. While MAX-phase synthesis at 800 °C is significantly lower than contemporary bulk sintering processes, a reduction of the substrate temperature towards 300 °C in the present thin-film deposition experiments resulted in stacking sequence variations and the intergrowth of (Ti,Al)C.

  • Structure and properties of Cr–C/Ag films deposited by magnetron sputtering
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 281, s. 184-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cr–C/Ag thin films with 0–14 at.% Ag have been deposited by magnetron sputtering from elemental targets. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study their structure and chemical bonding. A complex nanocomposite structure consisting of three phases; nanocrystalline Ag, amorphous CrCx and amorphous carbon is reported. The carbon content in the amorphous carbide phase was determined to be 32–33 at.% C, independent of Ag content. Furthermore, SEM and XPS results showed higher amounts of Ag on the surface compared to the bulk. The hardness and Young's modulus were reduced from 12 to 8 GPa and from 270 to 170 GPa, respectively, with increasing Ag content. The contact resistance was found to decrease with Ag addition, with the most Ag rich sample approaching the values of an Ag reference sample. Initial tribological tests gave friction coefficients in the range of 0.3 to 0.5, with no clear trends. Annealing tests show that the material is stable after annealing at 500 °C for 1 h, but not after annealing at 800 °C for 1 h. In combination, these results suggest that sputtered Cr–C/Ag films could be potentially applicable for electric contact applications.

  • Highlights from the first year of Odin observations
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 402, s. L39-L46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Key Odin operational and instrumental features and highlights from our sub-millimetre and millimetre wave observations of H2O, H218O, NH3, 15NH3 and O2 are presented, with some insights into accompanying Odin Letters in this A&A issue. We focus on new results where Odin's high angular resolution, high frequency resolution, large spectrometer bandwidths, high sensitivity or/and frequency tuning capability are crucial: H2O mapping of the Orion KL, W3, DR21, S140 regions, and four comets; H2O observations of Galactic Centre sources, of shock enhanced H2O towards the SNR IC443, and of the candidate infall source IRAS 16293-2422; H218O detections in Orion KL and in comet Ikeya-Zhang; sub-mm detections of NH3 in Orion KL (outflow, ambient cloud and bar) and ρ Oph, and very recently, of 15NH3 in~Orion KL. Simultaneous sensitive searches for the 119 GHz line of O2 have resulted in very low abundance limits, which are difficult to accomodate in chemical models. We also demonstrate, by means of a quantitative comparison of Orion KL H2O results, that the Odin and SWAS observational data sets are very consistently calibrated. Odin is a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes), and the Centre National d'études Spatiales (CNES, France). The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) has been the prime industrial contractor, and is also responsible for the satellite operation from its Odin Mission Control Centre at SSC in Solna and its Odin Control Centre at ESRANGE near Kiruna in northern Sweden. • Tissue-based map of the human proteome
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Science. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 347:6220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resolving the molecular details of proteome variation in the different tissues and organs of the human body will greatly increase our knowledge of human biology and disease. Here, we present a map of the human tissue proteome based on an integrated omics approach that involves quantitative transcriptomics at the tissue and organ level, combined with tissue microarray-based immunohistochemistry, to achieve spatial localization of proteins down to the single-cell level. Our tissue-based analysis detected more than 90% of the putative protein-coding genes. We used this approach to explore the human secretome, the membrane proteome, the druggable proteome, the cancer proteome, and the metabolic functions in 32 different tissues and organs. All the data are integrated in an interactive Web-based database that allows exploration of individual proteins, as well as navigation of global expression patterns, in all major tissues and organs in the human body.

  • Sequential magnetic switching in Fe/MgO(001) superlattices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 97:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polarized neutron reflectometry is used to determine the sequence of magnetic switching in interlayer exchangecoupled Fe/MgO(001) superlattices in an applied magnetic field. For 19.6 Å thick MgO layers we obtain a 90◦periodic magnetic alignment between adjacent Fe layers at remanence. In an increasing applied field the toplayer switches first followed by its second-nearest neighbor. For 16.4 Å MgO layers, a 180◦periodic alignment isobtained at remanence and with increasing applied field the layer switching starts from the two outermost layersand proceeds inwards. This sequential tuneable switching opens up the possibility of designing three-dimensionalmagnetic structures with a predefined discrete switching sequence

  • Discrete Layer-by-Layer Magnetic Switching in Fe/MgO(001) Superlattices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American physical society. - 2331-7019. ; 5:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a discrete layer-by-layer magnetic switching in Fe/MgO superlattices driven by an antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling. The strong interlayer coupling is mediated by tunneling through MgO layers with thicknesses up to at least 1.8 nm, and the coupling strength varies with MgO thickness. Furthermore, the competition between the interlayer coupling and magnetocrystalline anisotropy stabilizes both 90 degrees and 180 degrees periodic alignment of adjacent layers throughout the entire superlattice. The tunable layer-by-layer switching, coupled with the giant tunneling magnetoresistance of Fe/MgO/Fe junctions, is an appealing combination for three-dimensional spintronic memories and logic devices.

  • Growth of high quality epitaxial Si1-x-yGexCy layers by using chemical vapor deposition
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 224:1-4, s. 46-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The epitaxial quality of non-selective and selective deposition of Si1-x-yGexCy (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.30, 0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.02) layers has been optimized by using high-resolution reciprocal lattice mapping (HRRLM). The main goal was to incorporate a high amount of substitutional carbon atoms in Si or Si1-xGex matrix without creating defects. The carbon incorporation behavior was explained by chemical and kinetic effects of the reactant gases during epitaxial process. Although high quality epitaxial Si1-yCy layers can be deposited, lower electron mobility compared to Si layers was observed.
