  • Students’ experiences of the research-teaching nexus
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tertiary Education and Management. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1358-3883. ; , s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Students experience the research-teaching nexus differently as they progress through their first three years of undergraduate study depending on the discipline. The question is if students, within the same discipline, experience the nexus differently depending on the profile of the institution where they study. The present study explored students’ experiences of the research-teaching nexus (RT-nexus) during their undergraduate studies at one research-intensive and one teaching-intensive university. A survey (n=340) was distributed among business students at two Swedish universities. One finding is that students from both universities reported on a progression in how they experience the nexus, and in learning outcomes. Students also rated what teachers do and what they themselves do higher, than what their peers do. The main gap between students from the two universities was that students from the research-intensive university generally perceived a stronger connection between teaching and research than did students from the teaching-intensive university. They also to a higher extent found that a close connection between research and teaching in their education would be important to them in their future work life, whereas students from the teaching-intensive university were more unsure.

  • Building Bridges and Breaking Bonds : Aspects of social capital in a regional strategic network
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Investing in cluster formation or encouraging companies to network in regional strategic networks is a common strategy used by municipalities to promote regional growth in peripheral regions. Previous research has investigated the significance of creating regional advantages by building clusters and regional networks, but researchers have not provided much insight into the problems facing the project management trying to implement such collaboration. In my thesis I describe and analyze a network project in order to shed light upon some of the complications that such a collaboration project might entail. My theoretical framework of analysis rests upon the concept of social capital, a concept that investigates the value that social contacts might incur. I have studied a designed network situated in the Swedish municipality of Söderhamn called Firsam. After the closure of the telecommunications factory of Ericsson/Emerson and the military airbase F15 Söderhamn lost 10 % of its local employment in 2004.The need for regional growth programmes therefore became dire. The companies that prior to the closure worked in close collaboration with the Ericsson/Emerson factory were also looking for new revenue streams to compensate for their loss of business. Collaboration with the local manufacturing companies to create innovative projects and to take on joint tenders seemed to be a perfect solution to the problems facing them and the municipality. In this spirit a regional strategic network called Firsam (Företag i regional samverkan) was initiated. I analyze the Firsam project using two different aspects of the concept social capital:”bonding” and”bridging”. The bonding form of social capital is associated with small and homogeneous groups that build prerequisites for long-term collaboration by forming close contacts and building trust. The bridging form of social capital creates an open stance towards social relations that enables new contacts to be formed outside one’s own socially established context. The bonding form of social capital provides prerequisites for close collaboration but can also result in close-mindedness and over-embeddedness in one’s own social context. Building bridging connections outside one’s own social context might encourage innovative thinking and spur entrepreneurship. The somewhat fleeting connections that are associated with the bridging form of social capital might on the other hand make it difficult to cultivate a common sense of trust within an existing group. These different manifestations of social capital create a paradox that might be hard to handle in the design of a regional strategic network. Is it best to support already existing network structures and impose the risk of creating a less innovative environment, or should members from outside the established social context be included in the network design to encourage innovative thinking? There are both positive and negative effects associated with either strategy. I shed light upon this paradox by analyzing the regional strategic network of Firsam.

  • Pronounced kidney hypoxia precedes albuminuria in type 1 diabetic mice
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY-RENAL PHYSIOLOGY. - : American Physiological Society. - 1931-857X .- 1522-1466. ; 310:9, s. F807-F809
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intrarenal tissue hypoxia has been proposed as a unifying mechanism for the development of chronic kidney disease, including diabetic nephropathy. However, hypoxia has to be present before the onset of kidney disease to be the causal mechanism. To establish whether hypoxia precedes the onset of diabetic nephropathy, we implemented a minimally invasive electron paramagnetic resonance oximetry technique using implanted oxygen sensing probes for repetitive measurements of in vivo kidney tissue oxygen tensions in mice. Kidney cortex oxygen tensions were measured before and up to 15 days after the induction of insulinopenic diabetes in male mice and compared with normoglycemic controls. On day 16, urinary albumin excretions and conscious glomerular filtration rates were determined to define the temporal relationship between intrarenal hypoxia and disease development. Diabetic mice developed pronounced intrarenal hypoxia 3 days after the induction of diabetes, which persisted throughout the study period. On day 16, diabetic mice had glomerular hyperfiltration, but normal urinary albumin excretion. In conclusion, intrarenal tissue hypoxia in diabetes precedes albuminuria thereby being a plausible cause for the onset and progression of diabetic nephropathy.

  • Repetitive Measurements of Intrarenal Oxygenation In Vivo Using L Band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. - New York, NY : Springer New York. - 0065-2598 .- 2214-8019. - 9781493906208 - 9781493905836 ; 812, s. 135-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intrarenal oxygenation is heterogeneous with oxygen levels normally being highest in the superficial cortex and lowest in the inner medulla. Reduced intrarenal oxygenation has been implied in the pathology of several kidney diseases. However, there is currently no method available to repetitively monitor regional renal oxygenation using minimally invasive procedures. We therefore evaluated implantable lithium phthalocyanine (LiPc) probes, which display a close correlation between EPR line width and oxygen availability. LiPc probes were implanted in the kidney cortex and medulla in the same mouse and sEPR spectra were acquired using a L band scanner during inhalation of air (21 % oxygen) or a mixture of air and nitrogen (10 % oxygen). In order to separate the signals from the two probes, a 1 G/cm gradient was applied and the signals were derived from 40 consecutive sweeps. Peak-to-peak comparison of the EPR line was used to convert the signal to an approximate oxygen tension in MATLAB. Kidney cortex as well as medullary oxygenation was stable over the 45 day period (cortex 56 +/- 7 mmHg and medulla 43 +/- 6 mmHg). However, 10 % oxygen inhalation significantly reduced oxygenation in both cortex (56 +/- 6 to 34 +/- 2 mmHg n = 15 p < 0.05) and medulla (42 +/- 5 to 29 +/- 3 mmHg n = 7 p < 0.05). In conclusion, L band EPR using LiPc probes implanted in discrete intrarenal structures can be used to repetitively monitor regional renal oxygenation. This minimally invasive method is especially well suited for conditions of reduced intrarenal oxygenation since this increases the signal intensity which facilitates the quantification of the EPR signal to absolute oxygenation values.
