    • The physics potential of e + e - linear colliders is summarized in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, i.e. compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders up to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of e + e - linear colliders and the high precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analyzed, define an exciting physics program complementary to hadron machines.

  • Controlled Growth of the Self-Modulation of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma

    • A long, narrow, relativistic charged particle bunch propagating in plasma is subject to the self -modulation (SM) instability. We show that SM of a proton bunch can be seeded by the wakefields driven by a preceding electron bunch. SM timing reproducibility and control are at the level of a small fraction of the modulation period. With this seeding method, we independently control the amplitude of the seed wakefields with the charge of the electron bunch and the growth rate of SM with the charge of the proton bunch. Seeding leads to larger growth of the wakefields than in the instability case.

  • Development of the self-modulation instability of a relativistic proton bunch in plasma

    • Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size of the bunch and the plasma skin depth, the instability occurs later along the bunch, or not at all, over a fixed plasma length because the amplitude of the initial wakefields decreases. We show cases for which self-modulation does not develop, and we introduce a simple model discussing the conditions for which it would not occur after any plasma length. Changing bunch size and plasma electron density also changes the growth rate of the instability. We discuss the impact of these results on the design of a particle accelerator based on the self-modulation instability seeded by a relativistic ionization front, such as the future upgrade of the Advanced WAKefield Experiment.

  • Hosing of a Long Relativistic Particle Bunch in Plasma

    • Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, selfmodulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies close to the plasma electron frequency, and are reproducible. Development of hosing depends on misalignment direction, its growth on misalignment extent and on proton bunch charge. Results have the main characteristics of a theoretical model, are relevant to other plasma -based accelerators and represent the first characterization of hosing.

    • A systematic analysis of decoherence rates due to electron-phonon interactions for optical transitions of rare-earth dopant ions in crystals is presented in the frame of the point charge model. For this model, the large value of any one of the matrix elements of the unit tensor operator U((k)) of rank k for transitions within the 4f-electronic configuration, viz. U2, U4 or U6, is enough to ensure the strong optical transition between different levels, while the Stark-Stark transitions within the multiplet can be characterized by the matrix element U2 alone, the influence of elements U4, U6 being of much smaller order of magnitude and neglected. The circumstance that exactly such Stark-Stark transitions within the multiplet define the efficiency of electron-phonon interaction and, consequently, the decoherence rate (except for the case of lowest, less than approximately 2-4 K, temperatures), enables selection of optical transitions which are strong enough and at the same time are characterized by relatively small decoherence rates. Correspondingly, these optical transitions, provided that they lie in an appropriate spectral range and the gap to the nearest neighboring energy level is large enough (>500 cm(-1)) to prevent eventual fast phonon-assisted relaxation, should be considered as prospective for subsequent use in quantum informatics processing and communication. The list of such pre-selected transitions is given; the applicability area and limitations of our approach are discussed.

  • Influence of laser pulse duration on relativistic channels

    • A high-power (10 TW) laser is employed to generate relativistic channels in an underdense plasma. The lengths of the channels are measured by imaging the Thomson-scattered light, and the gas densities are determined through the forward Raman scattered light. The laser-pulse parameters are varied and their impact on the channel formation is studied. It is found that increasing the laser pulse duration in many cases produces longer channels, even as this implies reducing the laser peak power. A theoretical discussion is presented, proposing an explanation of the experimental results. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    • We have explored properties of an extension of the Inert Doublet Model by the addition of an extra non-inert scalardoublet. The model offers a possibility of CP violation in the scalar sector and a candidate for the Dark Matter. Allowed regions in the plane spanned by the mass of the Dark-Matter particle and the lightest neutral Higgs particle have been identified, and constraints from direct-detection experiments have been studied. For favorable parameter regions one may observe long-lived charged particles produced at the LHC.

  • Relativistic channel formation with different pulse durations

    • Relativistic channels are generated in an under-dense plasma by means of subpicosecond laser pulses. The channel extension is characterized via the Thomson-scattered light and the impact of the laser pulse duration and chirp are studied. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the channel extends further when the pulse duration is increased. This is in contrast to many earlier reports, where the channel grows with increasing laser power. Some theoretical arguments are presented to support the experimental findings. The number of electrons, accelerated in the forward direction, and their energies are assessed. In some cases, it is found that the channel divides and the fragments extend in different directions. This raises the question if, and how, the channel formation can be externally manipulated
