  • Economic Growth and Clean Water in the Göta River A Pilot Study of Collective Action and the Environmental Kuznets Curve 1895-2000
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Because of a growing population and industrialization, total pollution levels in many water-courses around the world have increased considerably for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In the last few decades, however, the trend of increasing water pollution has been turned in many industrialized countries, delinking economic growth from environmental pollution. This is in essence one aspect of what many environmental economists call an ‘environmental Kuznets curve’. The research question of this project is why there is such a pattern to water quality in many countries? Much previous literature on the topic studies only the positive impact of environmental legislation. This study, focusing upon the case of the river Göta in Sweden, undertakes a more thorough analysis, including other crucial factors as well such as industrial transformation and decline, as well as stakeholder associations. The project utilizes a very long series of data on the water quality in the river Göta, covering more than 100 years of data for crucial indicators, in order to establish what factors were contributing to reducing levels of pollution. Analyzing the driving factors of this ‘Environmental Kuznets Curve’ can give us crucial insights into how a sustainable development might be achieved in the future.

  • Flexibility and protectionism. Swedish trade in sugar during the early modern era
  • 2006
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sugar was of the utmost importance for the development of a transatlantic trade during the early modern era. This working paper explores the impact of institutions and institutional changes of the colonial trade in sugar focusing on one country on the European semi-periphery, namely Sweden. Through protectionist policies, Swedish merchants were able to catch a significant share of the Baltic trade in colonial goods, despite the country having no colonies of its own. This in turn enabled a diversification of the sources of colonial goods. Trade in sugar became highly flexible during the period, rapidly changing in response to a changing international market. Protectionist policies also enabled the development of a domestic sugar manufacture, which flourished during the late 18th and early 19th century. When Swedish trade policy was liberalized around the 1850s, the domestic industry went through hard times from the international competition. The introduction of sugar beet would however have even more far-reaching consequences for the international trade in sugar. Swedish sugar imports collapsed by more than 98 per cent in less than ten years when domestic production of sugar beet had gotten off to a start at the end of the 19th century. The preliminary conclusions form the first output from the work on a thesis concerned with the trade in colonial goods of actors in the European semi-periphery. One future aim is to compare the colonial trade in sugar of Sweden and Denmark.

  • From extreme luxury to everyday commodity Sugar in Sweden, 17th to 20th centuries
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper will focus upon the Swedish consumption of sugar, a product that illustrates the shift from being a luxury to being a mass-consumed commodity. Very little attention has been paid to the commodity of sugar by Swedish scholars, at least concerning the period prior to the introduction of the sugar beet in the late 19th century. The paper will try to answer three questions: - When did sugar experience a shift from luxury to everyday commodity? - What factors are important to explain the shift? - What impacts did the increasing sugar consumption have, at home and abroad? Regarding the last question, the paper most importantly presents a novel calculation of how large the ?ghost acreage? and slave labour population the Swedish consumption during the early modern era required.

  • The price of sugar in Sweden : Data, source & methods
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a new price series for sugar in Sweden, or more exactly Stockholm, in a long-term perspective (1624?1900). Prior to this, no price data has been available from Sweden for this commodity. The paper is devoted to presenting source-related and technical aspects of the price series, as well as the price series as such. Analysis of the development of prices will be conducted in other papers.

  • Mortality among European settlers in pre-colonial West Africa: The “White Man’s Grave” revisited
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We have created the first longitudinal dataset following European employees of the English Royal African Company during their time in West Africa, 1683–1766. The mortality was catastrophically high with limited geographical differences. Tropical diseases and epidemics thereof, contributed to the high mortality and strong variations over time. The risk was highest for the men who had just arrived from Europe but remained high also after they had spent several years on the coast. The death rate of the Europeans was increased by both the share of newcomers and by the total number of men present on the coast.
