  • Synergies and Trade-offs among Sustainable Development Goals : The Case of Spain

    • The United Nations plans have marked global sustainable development for more than two decades. Most of the developed and developing countries have adopted these plans to achieve the Agenda 2030, currently formed by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The analysis of the interactions between the SDGs is a growing area in research and of interest for governments. However, studies on how positive correlations can improve deteriorated goals are scarce for countries to date. This study aims at filling this gap by finding and quantifying the synergies and trade-offs among the SDGs of Spain. During the years 2000-2019, almost 80% of the SDG targets had significant interactions, either positive (synergy) or negative (trade-off). SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 5 (gender Equality) and SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) contained the largest number of positive interactions, more than 60% in all of them. SDG 3 (good health and wellbeing) was strongly linked with indicators from SDG 4 (quality education) and also SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation). Furthermore, indicators from SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) shared a high correlation with the ones from SGD 12 (responsible consumption and production) and SDG 15 (life on land). SDG 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), 6 (clean water and sanitation), 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 11 (sustainable cities and communities) had the slowest evolution during the years 2000-2019, showing contractions in some instances. We developed a regression model to assess the influence that selected targets have had on a less evolved target (target 8.6-proportion of youth not in education, employment or training). We managed to clarify high influence from target 1.3 (unemployment compensations), target 8.4 (domestic material consumption) and target 10.5 (non-performing loans) on the dependent variable. Identifying numerical dependencies between the SDGs may help nations to develop a roadmap where targets work as cogwheel towards achieving the Agenda 2030.

  • Identification of novel genes involved in acetic acid tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae using pooled-segregant RNA sequencing

    • Acetic acid tolerance of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is manifested in several quantifiable parameters, of which the duration of the latency phase is one of the most studied. It has been shown recently that the latter parameter is mostly determined by a fraction of cells within the population that resumes proliferation upon exposure to acetic acid. The aim of the current study was to identify genetic determinants of the difference in this parameter between the highly tolerant strain MUCL 11987-9 and the laboratory strain CEN. PK113-7D. To this end, a combination of genetic mapping and pooled-segregant RNA sequencing was applied as a new approach. The genetic mapping data revealed four loci with a strong linkage to strain MUCL 11987-9, each containing still a large number of genes making the identification of the causal ones by traditional methods a laborious task. The genes were therefore prioritized by pooled-segregant RNA sequencing, which resulted in the identification of six genes within the identified loci showing differential expression. The relevance of the prioritized genes for the phenotype was verified by reciprocal hemizygosity analysis. Our data revealed the genes ESP1 and MET22 as two, so far unknown, genetic determinants of the size of the fraction of cells resuming proliferation upon exposure to acetic acid.

    • This workshop will offer the participants the opportunity to explore and test a gaming environment integrating simulation data from different sources. The participants will model and play different mobility options for five European cities. The ProtoWorld solution integrates different simulations and street maps in Unity and allows a playful experience in urban mobility planning. The software will be available for the participants also after the workshop for further experimentation.

    • This paper addresses the generation maintenance scheduling (GMS) dilemma in a deregulated power system. At first, under a centralized cost minimization framework, a GMS is formulated and set as the benchmark (cost-minimization GMS). Then, the cost-minimization is changed into a profit-maximization problem of generation companies (GENCOs) and the GMS is developed as a bi-level optimization. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions are applied to transform the bi-level into a single-level mixed-integer linear problem and subsequently, Nash equilibrium is obtained as the final solution for the GMS under a deregulated market (profit-maximization GMS). Moreover, to incorporate reliability and economic regulatory constraints, two rescheduling signals (incentive and penalty) are considered as coordination processes among GENCOs and independent system operators. These signals are based on energy-not-supplied and operation cost, and ensure that the result of profit-maximization GMS is in the given reliability and social cost limits, respectively. These limits are obtained from the cost-minimization GMS. Lastly, the model is evaluated on a test system. The results demonstrate applicability and challenges in GMS problems.

    • The rapid development of Intelligent Transport Systems has created new objectives and requirements for traffic simulation models. The development of visualization, procedural modeling, decision support requirements mean that simulation models need to satisfy different requirements. The chapter presents methods and tools to create distribute, integrated and interactive transport simulations, to enable the holistic exploration of complex transport systems, to test different strategies for monitoring and control and for training personnel. The integrated simulation is built leveraging gaming technologies, integrating commercial or off-the-shelf simulations using methods from distributed simulation and procedural modeling techniques.

    • Simulating the behavior of crowds of artificial entities that have humanoid embodiments has become an important element in computer graphics and special effects. However, many important questions remain in relation to the perception of social behavior and expression of emotions in virtual crowds. Specifically, few studies have considered the role of background context on the perception of the full-body emotion expressed by sub-constituents of the crowd i.e. individuals and small groups. In this paper, we present the results of perceptual studies in which animated scenes of expressive virtual crowd behavior were rated in terms of their valence by participants. The behaviors of a task-irrelevant crowd in the background were altered between neutral, happy and sad in order to investigate effects on the perception of emotion from task-relevant individuals in the foreground. Effects of the task irrelevant background on ratings of foreground characters were found, including cases that accompanied negatively valenced stimuli.
