  • A Hybrid Micro-Simulator for Determining the Effects of Governmental Control Policies on Transport Chains
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Multi-Agent and Multi-Agent Based Simulation. - New York City : Springer.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A simulation-based tool is described which will be used to investigate how the actors in a transport chain are expected to act when different types of governmental control policies are applied, such as, fuel taxes, road tolls, vehicle taxes and requirements on vehicles. The simulator is composed of two layers, one layer simulating the physical activities taking place in the transport chain, e.g., production, storage, and transports of goods, and another layer simulating the different actors’ decision making processes. The decision layer is implemented by a multi-agent system where each agent corresponds to a particular actor and models the way it acts in different situations. The simulator will be used for analyzing the costs and environmental effects, and will in this way provide guidance in decision making regarding control policies. In addition, it will be possible for companies to use the simulator in order to determine cost-effective strategies given different (future) scenarios.

  • Agent-Based Approaches to Transport Logistics
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a survey of existing research on agent-based approaches to transportation and traffic management. A framework for describing and assessing this work will be presented and systematically applied. We are mainly adopting a logistical perspective, thus focusing on freight transportation. However, when relevant, work of traffic and transport of people will be considered. A general conclusion from our study is that agent-based approaches seem very suitable for this domain, but that this still needs be verified by more deployed system.

  • Inter-Organization Interoperability in Transport Chains Using Adapters Based on Open Source Freeware
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The significance of electronic information exchange in transport chains and its influence on the performance of the logistics processes is well known. While much focus is still on the various techniques for information exchange, many SMEs experience problems that are not primarily caused by an absence of technology. Several advanced solutions exist but investment possibilities within many SMEs are very limited while their needs for electronic data exchange may be very similar as for the large companies. We describe a general “adapter” solution based on open source freeware that make it possible (in principle) for any business system to exchange information with any other business system. It has been successfully applied in a pilot study involving two companies (the transport operator being an SME) using different business systems (Hogia Mobilast and Movex). The solution was evaluated with the result that it met the requirements of the companies and is now planned to be used for future data exchange between the companies.

  • Multi Agent Based Simulation of Transport Chains
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An agent-based tool for micro-level simulation of transport chains (TAPAS) is described. It is more powerful than traditional approaches as it is able to capture the interactions between individual actors of a transport chain, as well as their heterogeneity and decision making processes. Whereas traditional approaches rely on assumed statistical correlation between different parameters, TAPAS relies on causality, i.e., the decisions and negotiations that lead to the transports being performed. An additional advantage is that TAPAS is able to capture time aspects, such as, the influence of timetables, arrival times, and time-differentiated taxes and fees. TAPAS is composed of two layers, one layer simulating the physical activities taking place in the transport chain, e.g., production, storage, and transports of goods, and another layer simulating the different actors’ decision making processes and interaction. The decision layer is implemented as a multi-agent system using the JADE platform, where each agent corresponds to a particular actor. We demonstrate the use of TAPAS by investigating how the actors in a transport chain are expected to act when different types of governmental control policies are applied, such as, fuel taxes, road tolls, and vehicle taxes. By analyzing the costs and environmental effects, TAPAS provides guidance in decision making regarding such control policies. We argue that TAPAS may also complement existing approaches in different ways, for instance by generating input data such as transport demand. Since TAPAS models a larger part of the supply chain, the transport demand is a natural part of the output. Studies may concern operational decisions like choice of consignment size and frequency of deliveries, as well as strategic decisions like where to locate storages, terminals, etc., choice of producer, and adaptation of vehicle fleets.

  • Antimicrobial peptide induced colloidal transformations in bacteria-mimetic vesicles : combining in silico tools and experimental methods
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 596, s. 352-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the growing challenges of bacteria becoming resistant to conventional antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) may offer a potential alternative. One of the most studied AMPs, the human cathelicidin derived AMP LL-37 is notable for its antimicrobial activity even though its mechanism of action is not fully understood yet. This work investigates the interaction of LL-37 with 1-Palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-rac-(1-glycerol) (POPG) vesicles, which were employed as a bacterial membrane model given the common presence of this phospholipid in the bacterial membrane. Experimental techniques including small angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering were used to characterize the interactions among LL-37 and POPG. Molecular dynamics simulations complement the experimental studies with molecular-level insights into the process. LL-37 was discovered to actively and critically interact with the POPG vesicles, modifying the membrane curvature that eventually leads to structural transformations from vesicles to mixed micelles. The results shed light on the mechanisms underlying the interactions among LL-37 and bacteria mimetic vesicles and can guide the further development of AMP based antimicrobial materials and therapies.

  • A Role-based Method for Analyzing Supply Chain Models
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in Artificial Transportation Systems and Simulation. - : Academic Press. - 9780123970411 - 9780123973283 ; , s. 55-78
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present a role-based method for structured and uniform analysis of supply chain models. The method is based on a framework of supply chain roles, responsibilities, and interactions, which can be used to represent different types of organizations involved in providing and using products and transport services. To show the applicability, validity and generality of the method, we have used it to analyze five different supply chain models; three agent-based models, one model based on discrete event simulation, and one based on system dynamics.

  • A study on quantitative freight transport analysis models in Denmark and Sweden
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The aim of this paper is to present a study on freight transport analysis models. The purpose is to identify different stakeholders’ perceptions of existing models, e.g., strengths and weaknesses, and of their requirements and views on future models. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a questionnaire and interviews with representatives of public authorities, consultancy companies, and universities in Sweden and Denmark. Findings The study shows that there is a need for freight analysis models for supporting the transport planning in public authorities, including impact assessment of actions and estimation of freight flows. The respondents work mainly with macro-level models, whose main strength is their large geographic scopes, which allow comparative studies on, e.g., the national level using one model. Weaknesses include poor quality, missing functionality, and inadequate user-friendliness. In order to achieve improved freight transport analysis, the respondents wish to include more detailed logistics aspects in their analyses, which could possibly be achieved by combining macro-level and agent-based models. Research limitations/implications The limitation of this study is that we only included Danish and Swedish respondents, who mainly work with macro-level models. Moreover, only one Danish person answered the questionnaire. However, the respondent group represent a wide knowledge on freight and passenger transport models, and the study concerns to a large extent model types, not only particular models. Therefore, we argue that our findings have a wider geographic applicability. Practical implications The outcome of our study might be used by researchers and public authorities in order to, e.g., guide the decision-making on future model development: the views of the model users and clients are important to consider in order to assure that the development and research efforts lead to fulfilling their needs. Original/value The presented work provides insight into the needs and attitudes of model users and clients involved in freight transport analysis. This knowledge is important, e.g., for researchers involved in model development. According to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous study like the one presented.
