  • Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 mu m in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10(5) charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.

  • Preliminary results of the LAT Calibration Unit beam tests
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: First GLAST Symposium. - Melville : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 9780735404311 ; , s. 190-204

    • The calibration strategy of the GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT) combines analysis of cosmic ray data with accelerator particle beams measurements. An advanced Monte Carlo simulation of the LAT, based on the Geant4 package, was set up to reproduce the LAT response to such radiation and to benchmark the event reconstruction and the background rejection strategy before launch and during operation. To validate the LAT simulation, a massive campaign of beam tests was performed between July and November 2006, in parallel with the LAT integration and test, on the LAT Calibration Unit. This is a detector built with spare flight modules and flight-like readout electronics, which was exposed to a large variety of beams, representing the whole spectrum of the signal that will be detected by the LAT, using the CERN and the GSI accelerator facilities. Beams of photons (0 - 2.5 GeV), electrons (1-300 GeV), hadrons (π and p, a few GeV - 100 GeV) and ions (C, Xe, 1.5 GeV/n) were shot through the CU to measure the physical processes taking place in the detector and eventually fine-tune their description in the LAT Monte Carlo simulation. This paper describes the motivations and goals of the test runs, the many different experimental setups used, the measured detector performance and preliminary results of the LAT Monte Carlo validation.

  • Nuclear Structure of C-12 from Break-up Studies in Complete Kinematics
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. - 9780735407022 ; 1165, s. 27-30 461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A complete kinematics study of the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) and B-11(He-3,d alpha alpha alpha) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of C-12 resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. Four-particle coincidence detection gives us complete information on the direction and energy of the individual alpha particles from the decay of C-12, allowing us to extract new information on the structure of C-12 which we shall present in this contribution. We have observed gamma de-excitation of the T=1 15.11 MeV resonance using charged particle detectors, and have constructed Dalitz plots of the individual resonances in C-12 using the complete kinematics information of the alpha particles which come from their break-up.

  • Properties of resonances in 12C above the triple-alpha threshold
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 312:SECTION 9, s. Art. no. 092013-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A complete kinematics study of the 10B(3He, pααα) and the 11B(3He, dααα) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of 12C resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. The values of energy and widths of some states has been improved, and in states of natural parity partial branches of decay through the ground state of 8Be have been extracted. The influence of the "ghost" of the 8Be ground state has been taken into account in order to clarify the partial branches.

  • Bridging between coarse and fine resolution in variable resolution turbulence computations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: THMT-12. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TURBULENCE, HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER. - : BEGELL HOUSE, INC. ; , s. 1171-1177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variable-resolution (VR) bridging turbulence calculations in the context of partially-averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) approach have been conducted by adopting explicit terms for the energy transfer between the resolved and unresolved scales when the resolution is varying in time. The method is tested for decaying isotropic turbulence flow. It is demonstrated that the energy transfer terms dissipates the correct amount of resolved turbulence kinetic energy for decreasing resolution and is also able to produce the necessary resolved turbulence in the case of increasing resolution while conserving the total amount of turbulence energy. Time-developing mixing layer simulations are ongoing. Preliminary results show that the mixing growth rate is reasonably preserved for different rate of resolution, but that the response to variable resolution is somewhat too strong.
