    • Due to the past crises, the shipbuilding and offshore industry has realised that new innovative designs and design and production methods are necessary to decrease operational costs, production costs and emissions, while meeting the changing rules and regulations. This ISSC-V.3 report is discussing recent developmentin materials and fabrication technology applied to ship and offshore structures.Chapter 2 focuses on worldwide trends in materials and fabrication methods. Developments in metallicand non-metallic structural materials are dealt in Chapter 3. Advances in fabrication and joining technologiessuch as welding are increasing. Some main areas of applications and research in those areas aredescribed in Chapter 4. Innovative development about corrosion protection systems are presented inChapter 5 while Chapter 6 give an overview about the application of production simulation and virtualreality to improve the production management of ship and offshore structures. The ISSC-V.3 technical committee has performed a benchmark to define a Best Practice Guideline touse Computational Welding Mechanics tools (CWM) in shipbuilding and offshore industry. To achievethis objective various experimental welding tests have been performed in order to give a reference point. Both the residual welding distortions and residual stresses have been compared between numerical simulationsand welding experiments for a common “T” welded assembly used in the shipbuilding industry. However, it has been decided to publish the results of this study in a separate document. Nevertheless, Chapter 7 of this report presents the state of the art as well as the experimental test case that has been analysed.

  • Predictive mechanisms and object representations used in object manipulation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Sensorimotor Control of Grasping. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 9780521881579 ; , s. 161-177
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Skilled object manipulation requires the ability to estimate, in advance, the motor commands needed to achieve desired sensory outcomes and the ability to predict the sensory consequences of the motor commands. Because the mapping between motor commands and sensory outcomes depends on the physical properties of grasped objects, the motor system may store and access internal models of objects in order to estimate motor commands and predict sensory consequences. In this chapter, we outline evidence for internal models and discuss their role in object manipulation tasks. We also consider the relationship between internal models of objects employedby the sensorimotor system and representations of the same objects used by the perceptual system to make judgments about objects.

  • 2020. - 2
  • Ingår i: The senses. - : Elsevier. - 9780128054093 - 9780128054086 ; , s. 136-152
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dexterous object manipulation is a hallmark of human skill. The versatility of the human hands in manipulation tasks depends on both the anatomical structure of the hands and the neural machinery that controls them. Research during the last 20 years has led to important advances in our understanding of the sensorimotor control mechanisms that underlie dexterous object manipulation. This article focuses on the sensorimotor control of fingertip actions with special emphasis on the role of tactile sensory mechanisms. It highlights the importance of sensory predictions, especially related to mechanical contact events around which manipulation tasks are organized, and analyzes how such predictions are influenced by tactile afferent signals recorded in single neurons in awake humans.

  • Multimodality imaging beyond CLEM: Showcases of combined in-vivo preclinical imaging and ex-vivo microscopy to detect murine mural vascular lesions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Methods in Cell Biology. - : Elsevier. - 0091-679X. ; , s. 389-415
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In imaging, penetration depth comes at the expense of lateral resolution, which restricts the scope of 3D in-vivo imaging of small animals at micrometer resolution. Bioimaging will need to expand beyond correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) approaches to combine insights about in-vivo dynamics in a physiologically relevant 3D environment with ex-vivo information at micrometer resolution (or beyond) within the spatial, structural and biochemical contexts. Our report demonstrates the immense potential for biomedical discovery and diagnosis made available by bridging preclinical in-vivo imaging with ex-vivo biological microscopy to zoom in from the whole organism to individual structures and by adding localized spectroscopic information to structural and functional information. We showcase the use of two novel imaging pipelines to zoom into mural lesions (occlusions/hyperplasia and micro-calcifications) in murine vasculature in a truly correlative manner, that is using exactly the same animal for all integrated imaging modalities. This correlated multimodality imaging (CMI) approach includes well-established technologies such as Positron Emission Tomography (microPET), Autoradiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (microMRI) and Computed Tomography (microCT), and imaging approaches that are more novel in the biomedical setting, such as X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (microXRF) and High Resolution Episcopic Microscopy (HREM). Although the current pipelines are focused on mural lesions, they would also be beneficial in preclinical and clinical investigations of vascular diseases in general.

  • Object representations used in action and perception
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Motor control. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780199863518 - 9780195395273
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to predict accurately the mechanical properties of the objects we interact with is essential for skilled and dexterous manipulation. For example, when lifting an object, people typically scale the vertical lifting force to predicted object weight and, if the prediction is accurate, this enables them to lift smoothly. However, weight predictions are not used simply in action; they also influence our perception of weight. Strong evidence suggests that weight judgments are biased by expected weight, such that an object will be judged relatively heavy or light if it is heavier or lighter than expected, respectively. This bias is important, because it enables people to make comparative weight judgments and communicate this information to others. This chapter discusses how information about object mechanical properties, including weight, is represented in the brain, and the relation between representations of objects employed by the action system and representations of the same objects used by the perceptual system to make judgments about object properties.

  • Liquid products characterization from pyrolysis and gasification : How can it be classified?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Innovative Solutions in Fluid-Particle Systems and Renewable Energy Management. - : IGI Global. - 9781466687127 - 9781466687110 ; , s. 167-198
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter there is described a tentative of obtain and characterize pyrolysis liquids from cashew nut shell, using a suggested classification of tars. The large amount of tar definitions and measurement methods, as well as the wide spectrum of organic compounds, makes it almost impossible to capture "tars" with a clear definition. And so, in order to facilitate the study of the evolution of liquid fraction composition, the compounds have been grouped according to their chemical nature, but differently from other works, it was extended the range of compounds in order to evaluate the influence of the reactor parameters in liquid fraction compositions. It is described, as well, the pyrolysis and gasification of cashew nut shell, that has been studied in a laboratory scale reactor. It was quantified and classified the production of liquids (tar) and evaluated the final temperature influence (800, 900 and 1000 °C) and the use of N2 in pyrolysis case, and a mixture of N2 and steam or air in the gasification case. Finally, it is described the identification and quantification of tar compositions, by CG-MS and CG-FID analyzes. Around 50 different compounds have been detected in the liquid fraction obtained, most of them being present at very low concentrations and it is observed that in the pyrolysis and gasification processes, phenol and benzene were the major chemical groups, and this fact agree with others works, presented here in a bibliographic revision.

  • Structured rehabilitation model with clinical outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sports Injuries: Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment and Rehabilitation, Second Edition. - Berlin : Springer. - 9783642365690 ; , s. 1439-1465
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The goal of the rehabilitation after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is to assure that the athlete can return to sports and avoid reinjury in the short term and that there is minimal risk for other injuries in the long term. The recommendation in the current literature is to implement a well-planned, individualized, and criteria-based rehabilitation program as soon as possible, preferably on the same day as surgery. The rehabilitation has to be based on knowledge about the healing process after reconstruction, about the effect of rehabilitation techniques and exercise on tissue, and about the short- and long-term consequences of the injury. It has also to be individualized to meet each athlete's personal physiological and psychological needs regarding the extent of the injury and sports-related demands on the knee. The structured rehabilitation model that is presented in this chapter consists of four rehab phases, which take the patient and the phases of the tissue healing process into consideration. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012, 2015, All Rights Reserved.
