  • Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 mu m in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10(5) charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.

  • Towards the high-accuracy determination of the 238U fission cross section at the threshold region at CERN -€“ n_TOF
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The U-238 fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The U-238 fission cross section has been measured relative to the U-235 fission cross section at CERN - n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

  • Fission Fragment Angular Distribution measurements of 235U and 238U at CERN n_TOF facility
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-induced fission cross sections of U-238 and U-235 are used as standards in the fast neutron region up to 200 MeV. A high accuracy of the standards is relevant to experimentally determine other neutron reaction cross sections. Therefore, the detection efficiency should be corrected by using the angular distribution of the fission fragments (FFAD), which are barely known above 20 MeV. In addition, the angular distribution of the fragments produced in the fission of highly excited and deformed nuclei is an important observable to investigate the nuclear fission process. In order to measure the FFAD of neutron-induced reactions, a fission detection setup based on parallel-plate avalanche counters (PPACs) has been developed and successfully used at the CERN-n_TOF facility. In this work, we present the preliminary results on the analysis of new U-235(n,f) and U-238(n,f) data in the extended energy range up to 200 MeV compared to the existing experimental data.

  • High accuracy 234U(n,f) cross section in the resonance energy region
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ND 2016. - Les Ulis : EDP Sciences. - 9782759890200
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New results are presented of the 234U neutron-induced fission cross section, obtained with high accuracy in the resonance region by means of two methods using the 235U(n,f) as reference. The recent evaluation of the 235U(n,f) obtained with SAMMY by L. C. Leal et al. (these Proceedings), based on previous n_TOF data [1], has been used to calculate the 234U(n,f) cross section through the 234U/235U ratio, being here compared with the results obtained by using the n_TOF neutron flux.

  • SceneMaker : Creative technology for digital storytelling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Lect. Notes Inst. Comput. Sci. Soc. Informatics Telecommun. Eng.. - Cham : Springer Verlag. - 9783319558332 ; , s. 29-38
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The School of Creative Arts & Technologies at Ulster University (Magee) has brought together the subject of computing with creative technologies, cinematic arts (film), drama, dance, music and design in terms of research and education. We propose here the development of a flagship computer software platform, SceneMaker, acting as a digital laboratory workbench for integrating and experimenting with the computer processing of new theories and methods in these multidisciplinary fields. We discuss the architecture of SceneMaker and relevant technologies for processing within its component modules. SceneMaker will enable the automated production of multimodal animated scenes from film and drama scripts or screenplays. SceneMaker will highlight affective or emotional content in digital storytelling with particular focus on character body posture, facial expressions, speech, non-speech audio, scene composition, timing, lighting, music and cinematography. Applications of SceneMaker include automated simulation of productions and education and training of actors, screenwriters and directors. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2017.

  • A driving simulator evaluation of road markings and symbolic signs on vehicle-pedestrian conflicts
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th International Conference Road Safety on Four Continents. - Linköping : Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Pedestrians are amongst the most vulnerable of road users. A common way of accommodating pedestrians at non-signalized intersections is through the use of mid-block crosswalks. Pedestrian crashes at marked mid-block crosswalks are often no less frequent than at unmarked mid-block crosswalks. The risk to pedestrians is especially high when a driver’s view of pedestrians in a crosswalk is obstructed as the driver approaches the crosswalk creating a multi-threat situation for the pedestrian. Such a situation is too risky to study on the open road, but not on a driving simulator. Among the most effective and least costly of the safety alternatives are advance yield markings. This study uses a driving simulator to evaluate vehicle-pedestrian conflicts in sight-limited scenarios with advance yield markings and “Yield Here to Pedestrians” symbol signs as well as the standard crosswalk treatments and signs. Measures of drivers’ performance include actual crashes as well as the drivers’ glancing behavior to determine if the drivers approaching a marked midblock crosswalk look for pedestrians in the crosswalk more frequently and sooner in high risk, multiple-threat scenarios when advance yield markings and prompts are present than when standard markings and prompts are used. The results suggest that fewer crashes occur with advance yield markings. And we find that drivers look much more frequently and much sooner for pedestrians with advance yield markings. Uses and limitations surrounding the development of scenarios on a driving simulator and the advantages and limitations of using driving simulation to study problems such as this are discussed.

  • Design Of A 2 Mw Molten Salt Driven Supercritical Co2 Cycle And Turbomachinery For The Solarsco2Ol Demonstration Project
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo. - : ASME International.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycles have been identified as technology enablers for increasing the cost-competitiveness of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants. Compared to steam cycles, sCO2 cycles have the advantage of allowing higher inlet turbine temperatures, while also deploying turbomachinery that can be a ten-fold more compact. Ongoing research in CSP focuses mainly in developing new receiver and storage concepts able to withstand such required higher temperatures, alongside new heat exchangers that enable coupling to a sCO2 cycle. Meanwhile, advancements in sCO2 turbomachinery have taken place in research projects aimed at investigating the technical feasibility of the cycle, including the optimized design of its individual components and new cycle configurations. Among these, only few focus in demonstrating a full-integrated system, including cycle control and dynamics, and only two worldwide have started plans for MW-scale pilots, none of them in Europe. The EU-funded SOLARSCO2OL project aims at demonstrating a first-of-a-k ind 2 MW gross simple-recuperated sCO2 Brayton cycle driven by heat provided by molten salt s similar to those deployed in commercial CSP plants, which are able to operate at temperatures of up to 580°C. This paper introduces the project objectives and implementation plan, to then focus primarily on the results derived from the first year in specific relation to the conceptual design of each of 2 MW scale power cycle and its k ey components, including also the proposed integration and operational regimes, expected thermod ynamic performance at nominal point, and up-scaling considerations.
