Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- This is a case study of how the Arab poet Adonis has been translated into Swedish. The theoretical framework is the old issue of "untranslatability". the method applied is a close reading of selected poems by Adonis in their published Swedish translations. what kind of translation losses have occured in the transposition of the complex originals? The study examines this question through four critical focuses: 1) grammar and semantics, 2) intertextuality and culture, 3) poetic form, and 4) editing and selection. The analysis shows that "Adonis in Swedish" is a very different poet from "Adonis in Arabic" due to the combined effect of manipulations occuring in all these fields.

Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
- This chapter presents a critical reading from a translation studies perspective of five travel books about the Middle East written in the 1930s by the Swedish writer, translator and photographer Karin Johnsson (1889-1968). Her writing represents an example of the link between travel and translation. In her “Oriental adventures” she featured a number of famous love stories and love poems from classical Arabic literature as free translations. Raised in a long Swedish tradition of orientalizing literature, which constitutes the implicit context for her and her readers, she made these translations conform to the established clichés of Arab-Oriental passion and manipulated the texts on many levels. But despite a pervasive colonial perspective and examples of racist discourse, Johnsson’s travel books also show a development in attitude from an initial ridicule of the Arabs as a people to a more empathic approach at the end.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- It is often argued that the Arabic-Islamic culture was predominatly oral up until the advent of modernity. But recent research suggest a different interpretation. This article examines the problem of oral culture versus a culture of writing through readings of some primary sources, such as Kitab al-Hayawan by al-Jahiz, the Qur'an, and verses by the pre-Islamic poets Imru' al-Qays and Labid. It focuses on traces of literacy in the material, discussing in particular the history of the Arabic book as such and the evidence of different types of writing material like paper and pen. The conclusion supports the view that literacy was a dominat feature of classical Arabic-Islamic dulture, yet one that was complemented by an oral and aural dimensions that in some respects, notably religion, was eaqually important.
