  • Fatigue and recovery during and after static loading
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0014-0139 .- 1366-5847. ; 57:11, s. 1696-1710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Subjectively assessed endurance time (ET), resumption time (RT) and perceived discomfort, pain or fatigue (PD), and objectively measured maximum force-exerting capacity were investigated for varying loads and durations of a pushing task with two repeated trials. Beyond the main results quantifying how the load scenario affected ET, RT and PD, three additional results are of note: (1) although the maximum pushing force did not change between trials, shorter ET, longer RT and higher PD indicated accumulation of fatigue in Trial 2; (2) the PD ratings showed a trend with a linear increase during loading and a curvilinear decrease during recovery; and (3) the RT and the load level for different relative loading times were found to have an unexpected U-shaped relationship, indicating lowest fatigue at the intermediate load level. These results can be used to model a more sustainable and productive work-recovery ratio.

  • Developing an International Master’s Programme in Ergonomics at a Technical University in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th Congress of the International Ergonomics Association, IEA 2018. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319960791 - 9783319960807 ; , s. 429-436
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to present the rationale for, and the development process of, a new international master’s programme in Ergonomics, here framed as ‘Technology, Work and Health’, at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. The masters’ programme is designed for two years of full-time studies (120 credits). A challenge during this development process, has been to decide not only what to include in the programme, but also what to exclude. The systems-oriented discipline of ergonomics now covers all aspects of human work. Thus, two tracks of specialization are offered: Work Environment Engineering (WEE) and Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE). The programme is given for the first time in the autumn 2018. After the first year it is necessary to evaluate the programme from student and teacher perspectives, to capture effects and improvement possibilities. Naturally, this evaluation includes the usual course evaluations that are done during and after each course. But also, from a recruiting perspective, when we now how many students, from where, and of which background that eventually were awarded a MSc degree. Finally, a programme review with an emphasis on outcomes is essential to establish that the programme meets academic standards, professional discipline expectations among employers of the graduates, and student expectations and satisfaction. The results from this review will provide the incentive for necessary major and minor changes to maintain an up-to-date and high-quality curriculum in a discipline that continues to evolve.

  • Arbete och teknik på människans villkor
  • 2015. - 3

  • The SRA Index (Sustainable Risk Awareness Index) : A New KPI for Management Support
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 457-466
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective with this project is to develop a key performance indicator (KPI) related to work environment deviations, such as risk observations, near misses and injuries. This as a support for managers decision making in steering companies towards higher risk awareness as well as to contribute to the development of safer and more sustainable work environments and jobs. In addition, the aim is to contribute to a work environment (WE) reporting standard with a KPI related to the severity of WE deviations. Based on a literature study an iterative development of such a KPI has resulted in the Sustainable Risk Awareness Index (the SRA Index) and a visualization of it and its components using the Risk Awareness Triangle, also developed in this project. The development of the SRA Index is described and the index is exemplified with data from the electrical installation sector, the healthcare industry and one of Sweden’s largest private health company. Also the Risk Triangle is exemplified. The need for and the advantages of standardized methods to report WE deviations in companies sustainability reports are discussed. It is concluded that initial use of this KPI, according to management, fills an identified gap, it provides the management with a usable tool for systematic work environment overview and it supports their informed decision-making.

  • Facilitating Learning through an international virtual collaborative practice: A case study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - : Elsevier BV. - 0260-6917. ; 61, s. 3-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundInternationalisation of higher education involving information and communication technology such as e-learning opens opportunities for innovative learning approaches across nations and cultures.ObjectivesDescribe a case in practice of collaborative and transformative learning in relation to ‘internationalisation on home grounds’ with the broader learning objective of ‘becoming aware and knowledgeable’.DesignA mutually developed project established a virtual international collaborative exchange for faculty and students using a course management software (MOODLE) and open access technology (Adobe CONNECT).SettingsTwo research universities in Sweden and the United States.ParticipantsApproximately 90 nursing students from each university per semester over several semesters.MethodsA collaborative process to develop a joint learning community to construct a virtual module and learning activity involving academics and nursing students in two countries using principles of meaning construction and negotiated learning.ResultsDeveloped possibilities for dealing with the challenges and finding strategies for a future higher education system that opens dialogues worldwide.ConclusionsVirtual international exchanges open innovative communication and learning contexts across nations and cultures. Internationalisation is so much more than students and teachers' mobility. ‘Internationalisation on home grounds’ (internationalisation for all) should receive more attention to support faculty and student collaboration, learning, and professional development.

  • Exploring Maritime Ergonomics from a Bottom Line Perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs (JoMA). - : Springer. - 1651-436X .- 1654-1642. ; 9:2, s. 153-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper reports a study composed of three research activities exploring theeconomics of ergonomics in a shipping context. First, a literature study aimed to reviewprevious studies on the economics of ergonomics in general and within the maritimedomain in particular; and moreover, to ascertain the key ergonomic factors addressedin contemporary maritime ergonomic research. Second, the concept of ergonomics wasprobed from a stakeholder perspective through nine semi-structured qualitative interviews.Third, structured interviews were held with representatives of ten Swedish shippingcompanies to investigate if the shipowners are aware of and calculate the economiceffects of ergonomics. The results show that severalmodels and methods have been developed to estimate costsand benefits of ergonomics in other industries, but no studies were found from the shippingindustry.Whether these methods can be readily adapted to the shipping industry hasto be investigated further. While contemporary maritime ergonomic literature showed afocus on physical ergonomic and health and safety issues, the results of the stakeholderinterviews indicated a focus on organizational ergonomics. The Swedish shipownerscalculate the costs of sick-leave, but do not estimate the economic effects of ergonomicson a regular basis.
