Lärandets kontextualitet: Hur utvecklas ekonomstudenters förståelse av ett grundläggande ekonomiskt begrepp under utbildningen?

- Artikeln redovisar resultatet från en delstudie av en treårig variationsteoretiskt forskningsprojekt, som syftat till att undersöka dels ekonomstudenternas kvalitativt skilda sätt att uppfatta kritiska aspekter av ett grundläggande ekonomiskt begrepp, ”räntabilitet”, och dels undersöka förändringen av kvaliteten på urskiljda kritiska aspekter. Av speciellt intresse i denna studie har varit de svårigheter studenter i ekonomisk grundutbildning ställts inför, när de löst problem där räntabilitet utgjort ett viktigt begrepp. Ett urval av studenter, ur antagningsgruppen hösten 2000, har följts under den treåriga ekonom¬utbildningen. Vid tre intervjutillfällen, ett per år, har studenterna i de två första intervjuerna fått redovisa två egna problemlösningar som de gjort i samband med skriftliga examinationer. Under tredje intervjun har de fått lösa ett specialkonstruerat ekonomiskt problem. Analysen av sammanlagt 27 intervjuer, resulterade i tre beskrivningskategorier, där olika kritiska aspekter av begreppet fokuseras i respektive kategori. Studenternas kvalitativt skilda uppfattningar av begreppets innebörd varierade liksom deras individuella mönster av förståelse och kunskapsutveckling under grundutbild-ning¬en. Implikationer av resultaten för forskning om lärande, utbildning och undervisning i ämnet redovisning diskuteras och förslag ges på fortsatt forskning.

- Quality is playing an increasingly important role following recent developments in European Higher Education. The inclusion of quality assurance within the framework of the Bologna process, a new trend of competition and stratification of the European Higher Education Area, the increasing emergence of the markets as instruments of public policy and the loss of trust in institutions as a consequence of the progressive adoption of New Public Management have changed the traditional relationship between higher education institutions and society and governments and the role and objectives of quality assurance systems. It is in this fast changing context that the detailed analysis of the Institution Evaluation Programme (IEP) of the European University Association (EUA) becomes a very interesting case study due to the special characteristics of IEP which probably is the only durable European example of ‘supportive peer review’. The IEP is a special example due to its unique methodology that aims at supporting universities in their efforts to improve their quality management mechanisms and adapt to change. This methodology also makes IEP extremely flexible, being easily adaptable to different levels of evaluation (whole institutions, special services, single specialised faculties, regions and even whole systems). The book includes a number of research based papers with stronger theoretical content and chapters that describe aspects of IEP. EUA, seat in Brussels, is the result of a merger in 2001 between the Association of European Universities (CRE, founded 1959 in France) and the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences. EUA has conducted evaluations in more than 250 universities in 46 countries during the past 14 years (mainly in Europe but also in Latin America and South Africa).

Articulation of principles on the micro level - observing argumentation in a merger process

- The merging process between a Swedish and a Norwegian manufacturing company has been studied using interviews, video recordings and comments explaining video recorded events at meetings. It is assumed that sensemaking includes a choice of con-text to apply to the text at hand. But sensemaking also offers opportunities to propagate a certain con-text/perspective. Here a central idea, "selvstendig bedrift" (independent and self-sufficient company), is taken as the object to unpack. We demonstrate how it has become value-laden in Norwegian managerial discourse and tied to a managerial role that differs slightly from the Swedish one. We also show an example of how principles packed into this idea become articulated in practical discourse in a management meeting and how participants interpret "what is going on". A conclusion is that a speaker must pay attention to what context he or she wants to mobilize in the audience. We also question to what extent terms like "shared values" or "shared information" has any useful meaning.
