  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The discovery of almost two thousand exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. We see gas giants in few-day orbits, whole multi-planet systems within the orbit of Mercury, and new populations of planets with masses between that of the Earth and Neptune-all unknown in the Solar System. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? How do planetary systems work and what causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? The EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) space mission was conceived to take up the challenge to explain this diversity in terms of formation, evolution, internal structure and planet and atmospheric composition. This requires in-depth spectroscopic knowledge of the atmospheres of a large and well-defined planet sample for which precise physical, chemical and dynamical information can be obtained. In order to fulfil this ambitious scientific program, EChO was designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large, diverse and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. The transit and eclipse spectroscopy method, whereby the signal from the star and planet are differentiated using knowledge of the planetary ephemerides, allows us to measure atmospheric signals from the planet at levels of at least 10(-4) relative to the star. This can only be achieved in conjunction with a carefully designed stable payload and satellite platform. It is also necessary to provide broad instantaneous wavelength coverage to detect as many molecular species as possible, to probe the thermal structure of the planetary atmospheres and to correct for the contaminating effects of the stellar photosphere. This requires wavelength coverage of at least 0.55 to 11 mu m with a goal of covering from 0.4 to 16 mu m. Only modest spectral resolving power is needed, with R similar to 300 for wavelengths less than 5 mu m and R similar to 30 for wavelengths greater than this. The transit spectroscopy technique means that no spatial resolution is required. A telescope collecting area of about 1 m(2) is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision: for the Phase A study a 1.13 m(2) telescope, diffraction limited at 3 mu m has been adopted. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. EChO has been conceived to achieve a single goal: exoplanet spectroscopy. The spectral coverage and signal-to-noise to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would be a game changer by allowing atmospheric composition to be measured with unparalleled exactness: at least a factor 10 more precise and a factor 10 to 1000 more accurate than current observations. This would enable the detection of molecular abundances three orders of magnitude lower than currently possible and a fourfold increase from the handful of molecules detected to date. Combining these data with estimates of planetary bulk compositions from accurate measurements of their radii and masses would allow degeneracies associated with planetary interior modelling to be broken, giving unique insight into the interior structure and elemental abundances of these alien worlds. EChO would allow scientists to study exoplanets both as a population and as individuals. The mission can target super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300-3000 K) of F to M-type host stars. The EChO core science would be delivered by a three-tier survey. The EChO Chemical Census: This is a broad survey of a few-hundred exoplanets, which allows us to explore the spectroscopic and chemical diversity of the exoplanet population as a whole. The EChO Origin: This is a deep survey of a subsample of tens of exoplanets for which significantly higher signal to noise and spectral resolution spectra can be obtained to explain the origin of the exoplanet diversity (such as formation mechanisms, chemical processes, atmospheric escape). The EChO Rosetta Stones: This is an ultra-high accuracy survey targeting a subsample of select exoplanets. These will be the bright "benchmark" cases for which a large number of measurements would be taken to explore temporal variations, and to obtain two and three dimensional spatial information on the atmospheric conditions through eclipse-mapping techniques. If EChO were launched today, the exoplanets currently observed are sufficient to provide a large and diverse sample. The Chemical Census survey would consist of > 160 exoplanets with a range of planetary sizes, temperatures, orbital parameters and stellar host properties. Additionally, over the next 10 years, several new ground- and space-based transit photometric surveys and missions will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets.

  • Edge computing for cyber-physical systems : A Systematic Mapping Study Emphasizing Trustworthiness
  • 2022
  • In: ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 2378-962X .- 2378-9638. ; 6:3, s. 1-28
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Edge computing is projected to have profound implications in the coming decades, proposed to provide solutions for applications such as augmented reality, predictive functionalities, and collaborative Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). For such applications, edge computing addresses the new computational needs, as well as privacy, availability, and real-time constraints, by providing local high-performance computing capabilities to deal with the limitations and constraints of cloud and embedded systems. Edge computing is today driven by strong market forces stemming from IT/cloud, telecom, and networking - with corresponding multiple interpretations of ”edge computing” (e.g. device edge, network edge, distributed cloud, etc.). Considering the strong drivers for edge-computing and the relative novelty of the field, it becomes important to understand the specific requirements and characteristics of edge-based CPS, and to ensure that research is guided adequately, e.g. avoiding specific gaps. Our interests lie in the applications of edge computing as part of CPS, where several properties (or attributes) of trustworthiness, including safety, security, and predictability/availability are of particular concern, each facing challenges for the introduction of edge-based CPS. We present the results of a systematic mapping study, a kind of systematic literature survey, investigating the use of edge computing for CPS with a special emphasis on trustworthiness. The main contributions of this study are a detailed description of the current research efforts in edge-based CPS and the identification and discussion of trends and research gaps. The results show that the main body of research in edge-based CPS only to a very limited extent consider key attributes of system trustworthiness, despite many efforts referring to critical CPS and applications like intelligent transportation. More research and industrial efforts will be needed on aspects of trustworthiness of future edge-based CPS including their experimental evaluation. Such research needs to consider the multiple interrelated attributes of trustworthiness including safety, security, and predictability, and new methodologies and architectures to address them. It is further important to provide bridges and collaboration between edge computing and CPS disciplines.

  • Implementation of hybrid simulation schemes in COBAYA3/SUBCHANFLOW coupled codes for the efficient direct prediction of local safety parameters
  • 2014
  • In: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 70, s. 216-229
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The precise prediction of power generation, heat transfer and flow distribution within a reactor core is of great importance to asses the safety features of any reactor design. The necessity to better describe the most important safety related physical phenomena prevailing in LWRs drive the extensions of current neutronic (N)/thermal-hydraulic (TH) coupled methodologies. Nowadays, several computer codes that solve the time dependent neutron diffusion or transport equations are coupled with TH codes at nodal level. This coarse spatial discretization of both N and TH does not allow direct prediction of local phenomena at pin or subchannel levels. Moreover, pin by pin simulations are currently performed using different strategies and methodologies. The main drawback of these approaches is the considerable computational time needed when addressing whole core solutions. Consequently, new fast running and accurate approaches are needed to simulate reactor cores using multi physics and multi scale methodologies. This type of analysis includes for instance, the use of mixed nodal based solutions with pin level solutions for both N and TH. This paper discusses a methodology implemented to achieve coupled N/TH simulations based on hybrid schemes. First, an overview of the state of the art involving non-conform geometry is presented, followed with the description of the codes used for this purpose and their extensions to perform hybrid simulations. Results for the coupled N/TH scheme are presented for a full size PWR core in steady state.

  • Microwave heating for sustainable valorization of almond hull towards high-added-value chemicals
  • 2022
  • In: Industrial crops and products (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-6690 .- 1872-633X. ; 189
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Microwave (MW) treatment promotes homogeneous heating compared to conventional methods, thus increasing the recovery of high-added-value compounds and leading to a considerably lower amount of both by-products and side reactions. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to valorize almond hull (AH) via microwave (MW)-assisted radiation (0–200 W, 0–300 psi, 100–190 °C, 10–40 min). In this context, two different pathways were evaluated. Firstly, the transformation of AH into levulinic acid (LA), one of the major bio-based chemicals obtained from lignocellulosic biomass. The so-called almond hull extractives-free biomass (AH-EFB) led to the best results after using both Lewis (AlCl3⋅6 H2O, 1 mol/L, 87 % molar yield) and Brønsted (p-toluenesulfonic (p-TsOH), 0.25 mol/L, 91 % molar yield) acids, at 190 °C for 20 min. This latter not only provides a sustainable system in contrast to mineral acids such as H2SO4 or HCl, but also the possibility of being recovered and recycled for further transformations. In a parallel secondary experiment, the recovery of biologically active compounds (BACs) was studied separately. For this purpose, antioxidant assays and phenolic profiling were carried out, which demonstrated that MW was more efficient than traditional methods (i.e. soaking) based on obtained values in terms of scavenging activity and polyphenols. Overall, this valorization approach involves most of the Green Chemistry principles, thus contributing to the development of almond biorefineries.

  • Advances Towards Data-Race-Free Cache Coherence Through Data Classification
  • 2017
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Providing a consistent view of the shared memory based on precise and well-defined semantics—memory consistency model—has been an enabling factor in the widespread acceptance and commercial success of shared-memory architectures. Moreover, cache coherence protocols have been employed by the hardware to remove from the programmers the burden of dealing with the memory inconsistency that emerges in the presence of the private caches. The principle behind all such cache coherence protocols is to guarantee that consistent values are read from the private caches at all times. In its most stringent form, a cache coherence protocol eagerly enforces two invariants before each data modification: i) no other core has a copy of the data in its private caches, and ii) all other cores know where to receive the consistent data should they need the data later. Nevertheless, by partly transferring the responsibility for maintaining those invariants to the programmers, commercial multicores have adopted weaker memory consistency models, namely the Total Store Order (TSO), in order to optimize the performance for more common cases. Moreover, memory models with more relaxed invariants have been proposed based on the observation that more and more software is written in compliance with the Data-Race-Free (DRF) semantics. The semantics of DRF software can be leveraged by the hardware to infer when data in the private caches might be inconsistent. As a result, hardware ignores the inconsistent data and retrieves the consistent data from the shared memory. DRF semantics therefore removes from the hardware the burden of eagerly enforcing the strong consistency invariants before each data modification. Instead, consistency is guaranteed only when needed. This results in manifold optimizations, such as reducing the energy consumption and improving the performance and scalability. The efficiency of detecting and discarding the inconsistent data is an important factor affecting the efficiency of such coherence protocols. For instance, discarding the consistent data does not affect the correctness, but results in performance loss and increased energy consumption. In this thesis we show how data classification can be leveraged as an effective tool to simplify the cache coherence based on the DRF semantics. In particular, we introduce simple but efficient hardware-based private/shared data classification techniques that can be used to efficiently detect the inconsistent data, thus enabling low-overhead and scalable cache coherence solutions based on the DRF semantics.

  • Exhaled breath analysis for gastric cancer diagnosis in Colombian patients.
  • 2018
  • In: Oncotarget. - : Impact Journals, LLC. - 1949-2553. ; 9:48, s. 28805-28817
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present here the first study that directly correlates gastric cancer (GC) with specific biomarkers in the exhaled breath composition on a South American population, which registers one of the highest global incidence rates of gastric affections. Moreover, we demonstrate a novel solid state sensor that predicts correct GC diagnosis with 97% accuracy. Alveolar breath samples of 30 volunteers (patients diagnosed with gastric cancer and a controls group formed of patients diagnosed with other gastric diseases) were collected and analyzed by gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) and with an innovative chemical gas sensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNP) functionalized with octadecylamine ligands. Our GC-MS analyses identified 6 volatile organic compounds that showed statistically significant differences between the cancer patients and the controls group. These compounds were different from those identified in previous studied performed on other populations with high incidence rates of this malady, such as China (representative for Eastern Asia region) and Latvia (representative for Baltic States), attributable to lifestyle, alimentation and genetics differences. A classification model based on principal component analysis of our sensor data responses to the breath samples yielded 97% accuracy, 100% sensitivity and 93% specificity. Our results suggest a new and non-intrusive methodology for early diagnosis of gastric cancer that may be deployed in regions lacking well-developed health care systems as a prediagnosis test for selecting the patients that should undergo deeper investigations (e.g., endoscopy and biopsy).

  • BiosecurID : A Multimodal Biometric Database
  • 2010
  • In: Pattern Analysis and Applications. - New York, USA : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1433-7541 .- 1433-755X. ; 13:2, s. 235-246
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A new multimodal biometric database, acquired in the framework of the BiosecurID project, is presented together with the description of the acquisition setup and protocol. The database includes eight unimodal biometric traits, namely: speech, iris, face (still images, videos of talking faces), handwritten signature and handwritten text (on-line dynamic signals, off-line scanned images), fingerprints (acquired with two different sensors), hand (palmprint, contour-geometry) and keystroking. The database comprises 400 subjects and presents features such as: realistic acquisition scenario, balanced gender and population distributions, availability of information about particular demographic groups (age, gender, handedness), acquisition of replay attacks for speech and keystroking, skilled forgeries for signatures, and compatibility with other existing databases. All these characteristics make it very useful in research and development of unimodal and multimodal biometric systems. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.

  • Foresee the Unseen : Sequential Reasoning about Hidden Obstacles for Safe Driving
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Safe driving requires autonomous vehicles to anticipate potential hidden traffic participants and other unseen objects, such as a cyclist hidden behind a large vehicle, or an object on the road hidden behind a building. Existing methods are usually unable to consider all possible shapes and orientations of such obstacles. They also typically do not reason about observations of hidden obstacles over time, leading to conservative anticipations. We overcome these limitations by (1) modeling possible hidden obstacles as a set of states of a point mass model and (2) sequential reasoning based on reachability analysis and previous observations. Based on (1), our method is safer, since we anticipate obstacles of arbitrary unknown shapes and orientations. In addition, (2) increases the available drivable space when planning trajectories for autonomous vehicles. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our method, at no expense of safety, gives rise to significant reductions in time to traverse various intersection scenarios from the CommonRoad Benchmark Suite.
