  • Coulomb dissociation of O-16 into He-4 and C-12
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NUCLEAR PHYSICS IN ASTROPHYSICS - X, NPA-X 2022. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X. ; 279
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured the Coulomb dissociation of O-16 into He-4 and C-12 within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section O-16(alpha,gamma)C-12, which is the time reversed reaction to C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the (RB)-B-3 setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity O-16 beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted O-16 ions pass, while detecting the C-12 and He-4.

  • IceCube search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2023). - : Sissa Medialab Srl.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) ever observed. The observed extremelyhigh flux of high and very-high-energy photons provide a unique opportunity to probe the predictedneutrino counterpart to the electromagnetic emission. We have used a variety of methods to searchfor neutrinos in coincidence with the GRB over several time windows during the precursor, promptand afterglow phases of the GRB. MeV scale neutrinos are studied using photo-multiplier ratescalers which are normally used to search for galactic core-collapse supernovae neutrinos. GeVneutrinos are searched starting with DeepCore triggers. These events don’t have directionallocalization, but instead can indicate an excess in the rate of events. 10 GeV - 1 TeV and >TeVneutrinos are searched using traditional neutrino point source methods which take into accountthe direction and time of events with DeepCore and the entire IceCube detector respectively. The>TeV results include both a fast-response analysis conducted by IceCube in real-time with timewindows of T0 − 1 to T0 + 2 hours and T0 ± 1 day around the time of GRB 221009A, as well asan offline analysis with 3 new time windows up to a time window of T0 − 1 to T0 + 14 days, thelongest time period we consider. The combination of observations by IceCube covers 9 ordersof magnitude in neutrino energy, from MeV to PeV, placing upper limits across the range forpredicted neutrino emission.

  • Quantifying the reproducibility of scientometric analyses: a case study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 23rd international conference on science and technology indicators (STI 2018).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reproducibility of scientific articles and their findings has gained importance in the last years. Although most efforts have been made in biomedicine, health and psychology science, reproducibility is important and necessary in all the research fields. Thus, in this contribution an empirical evaluation of the reproducibility of scientometric studies was carried out. To do so, 285 articles published in the journal of Scientometrics in 2017 were examined in term of the following reproducibility artifacts: workflow, search strategy, database, software, the availability of the source code (where applicable) and the availability of the dataset. Our findings showed that whilst workflow and search strategy were well described in the majority of articles, the dataset used was shared by very few studies. The data was usually retrieved from the WoS and Scopus databases. Finally, a few articles shared the source code where ad-hoc software was used.

  • Foresee the Unseen : Sequential Reasoning about Hidden Obstacles for Safe Driving
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 255-264
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Safe driving requires autonomous vehicles to anticipate potential hidden traffic participants and other unseen objects, such as a cyclist hidden behind a large vehicle, or an object on the road hidden behind a building. Existing methods are usually unable to consider all possible shapes and orientations of such obstacles. They also typically do not reason about observations of hidden obstacles over time, leading to conservative anticipations. We overcome these limitations by (1) modeling possible hidden obstacles as a set of states of a point mass model and (2) sequential reasoning based on reachability analysis and previous observations. Based on (1), our method is safer, since we anticipate obstacles of arbitrary unknown shapes and orientations. In addition, (2) increases the available drivable space when planning trajectories for autonomous vehicles. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our method, at no expense of safety, gives rise to significant reductions in time to traverse various intersection scenarios from the CommonRoad Benchmark Suite.

  • Evaluating Sequential Reasoning about Hidden Objects in Traffic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ICCPS '22: Proceedings of the 13th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hidden traffic participants pose a great challenge for autonomous vehicles. Previous methods typically do not use previous observations, leading to over-conservative behavior. In this paper, we present a continuation of our work on reasoning about objects outside the current sensor view. We aim to demonstrate our recently proposed method on an autonomous platform and evaluate its reliability and real-time feasibility when using real sensor data. Showing a significant driving performance increase on a real platform, without compromising safety, would be a significant contribution to the field of autonomous driving.

  • Adaptive optics and MCAO for the 4-m European Solar Telescope EST
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Adaptive Optics Systems II. - : SPIE. ; , s. 77360U-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A consortium of more than 20 European solar physics institution from 15 different countries is conducting a design study for a 4 m class solar telescope which shall be situated at the Canary Islands. In this paper we introduce the AO and MCAO design concept for EST. A ground layer deformable mirror is combined with an arrangement of four deformable layer mirrors. A combination of Shack-Hartmann wave front sensors with wide and narrow fields of view is used to control the system and to achieve a corrected field of view of one arcmin.
