  • Role of Oxidation–Reduction Dynamics in the Application of Cu/ZnO-Based Catalysts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - 2574-0970. ; 6:9, s. 8004-8016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated Cu nanoparticles (NPs) on vicinal and basal ZnO supports to obtain an atomistic picture of the catalyst’s structure under in situ oxidizing and reducing conditions. The Cu/ZnO model catalysts were investigated at elevated gas pressures by high energy grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). We find that the Cu nanoparticles are fully oxidized to Cu2O under atmospheric conditions at room temperature. As the nanoparticles swell during oxidation, they maintain their epitaxy on basal ZnO (000 ± 1) surfaces, whereas on the vicinal ZnO (101̅4) surface, the nanoparticles undergo a coherent tilt. We find that the oxidation process is fully reversible under H2 flow at 500 K, resulting in predominantly well-aligned nanoparticles on the basal surfaces, whereas the orientation of Cu NPs on vicinal ZnO was only partially restored. The analysis of the substrate crystal truncation rods evidences the stability of basal ZnO surfaces under all gas conditions. No Cu–Zn bulk alloy formation is observed. Under CO2 flow, no diffraction signal from the nanoparticles is detected, pointing to their completely disordered state. The AP-XPS results are in line with the formation of CuO. Scanning electron microscopy images show that massive mass transport has set in, leading to the formation of larger agglomerates.

  • A consensus yeast metabolic network reconstruction obtained from a community approach to systems biology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. ; 26:10, s. 1155-1160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genomic data allow the large-scale manual or semi-automated assembly of metabolic network reconstructions, which provide highly curated organism-specific knowledge bases. Although several genome-scale network reconstructions describe Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolism, they differ in scope and content, and use different terminologies to describe the same chemical entities. This make comparisons between them difficult and underscores the desirability of a consolidated metabolic network that collects and formalizes the 'community knowledge' of yeast metabolism. We describe how we have produced a consensus metabolic network reconstruction for S. cerevisiae. In drafting it, we placed special emphasis on referencing molecules to persistent databases or using database-independent forms, such as SMILES or InChl strings, as this permits their chemical structure to be represented unambiguously and in a manner that permits automated reasoning. The reconstruction is readily available via a publicly accessible database and in the Systems Biology Markup Language (http://www.comp-sys-bio.org/yeastnet). It can be maintained as a resource that serves as a common denominator for studying the systems biology of yeast. Similar strategies should benefit communities studying genome-scale metabolic networks of other organisms.

  • Hybrid cancellation of ripple disturbances arising in AC/DC converters
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Automatica. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0005-1098 .- 1873-2836. ; 77, s. 344-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In AC/DC converters, a peculiar periodic nonsmooth waveform arises, the so-called ripple. In this paper we propose a novel model that captures this nonsmoothness by means of a hybrid dynamical system performing state jumps at certain switching instants, and we illustrate its properties with reference to a three phase diode bridge rectifier. As the ripple corrupts an underlying desirable signal, we propound two observer schemes ensuring asymptotic estimation of the ripple, the first with and the second without knowledge of the switching instants. Our theoretical developments are well placed in the context of recent techniques for hybrid regulation and constitute a contribution especially for our second observer, where the switching instants are estimated. Once asymptotic estimation of the ripple is achieved, the ripple can be conveniently canceled from the desirable signal, and thanks to the inherent robustness properties of the proposed hybrid formulation, the two observer schemes require only that the desirable signal is slowly time varying compared to the ripple. Exploiting this fact, we illustrate the effectiveness of our second hybrid observation law on experimental data collected from the Joint European Torus tokamak.

  • Workflow Management Systems Benchmarking : Unfulfilled Expectations and Lessons Learned
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2017 IEEE/ACM 39TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOFTWARE ENGINEERING COMPANION (ICSE-C 2017). - : IEEE. - 9781538615898 ; , s. 379-381
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are a type of middleware that enables the execution of automated business processes. Users rely on WfMSs to construct flexible and easily maintainable software systems. Significant effort has been invested into standardising languages for business processes execution, with standards such as the Web Services Business Process Execution Language 2.0 or the Business Process Model and Notation 2.0. Standardisation aims at avoiding vendor lockin and enabling WfMS users to compare different systems. The reality is that, despite standardisation efforts, different independent research initiatives show that objectively comparing WfMSs is still challenging. As a result, WfMS users are likely to discover unfulfilled expectations while evaluating and using these systems. In this work, we discuss the findings of two research initiatives dealing with WfMSs benchmarking, presenting unfulfilled expectations and lessons learned concerning WfMSs' usability, reliability, and portability. Our goal is to provide advice for practitioners implementing or planning to use WfMSs.

  • Opening the black box of energy modelling : Strategies and lessons learned
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Energy Strategy Reviews. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 2211-467X .- 2211-4688. ; 19, s. 63-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The global energy system is undergoing a major transition, and in energy planning and decision-making across governments, industry and academia, models play a crucial role. Because of their policy relevance and contested nature, the transparency and open availability of energy models and data are of particular importance. Here we provide a practical how-to guide based on the collective experience of members of the Open Energy Modelling Initiative (Openmod). We discuss key steps to consider when opening code and data, including determining intellectual property ownership, choosing a licence and appropriate modelling languages, distributing code and data, and providing support and building communities. After illustrating these decisions with examples and lessons learned from the community, we conclude that even though individual researchers' choices are important, institutional changes are still also necessary for more openness and transparency in energy research.

  • The Nature and a Process for Development of Enterprise Architecture Principles
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Business Information Systems - 18th International Conference, BIS 2015, Poznan, Poland, June 24-26, 2015.. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319190266 ; , s. 260-272
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enterprise architecture management (EAM) is expected to contribute to, e.g., strategic planning and business-IT-alignment by capturing the essential structures of an enterprise. Enterprise architecture principles (EAPs) are among the subjects in EAM research that have received increasing attention during the last years, but still are not fully covered regarding their characteristics and their development and use in practice. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the EAM field by investigating the nature of EAPs and by proposing and validating a development process for EAPs. The main contributions of the paper are (a) an analysis of the characteristics of EAPs, (b) an initial development process for EAPs, and (c) the results of expert interviews for validating this process.
