  • Groups for Parents with Intellectual Disabilities : A Qualitive Analysis of Experiences
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: JARID. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1360-2322 .- 1468-3148. ; 30:4, s. 638-647
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundParents with intellectual disabilities (IDs) are often socially isolated and need support.Materials and MethodsThis qualitative study is based on participant observations of a group for parents with with intellectual disabilities. Data were categorized and interpreted in the framework of social capital and symbolic interactionism.ResultsBeing a part of the parent group provided parents with a social network, which had the potential to be supportive in everyday life. The social workers in the group were seen as allies, and parents appeared to trust them and felt they could seek advice and tell them about their personal problems. The parents sometimes asked for advice about how to handle contacts with other professionals in their everyday life. The parents valued the social contact with the other parents.ConclusionsThe group provided the parents with the opportunity to meet both other parents and two social workers. The group gave a greater number of social relations, adding to the parents’ social capital and helping to reduce social isolation.

  • Evidence and evidence gaps in assessments and interventions in areas related to social work research and practice - an overview of four evidence maps
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 26:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This overview of four evidence maps is based on systematic reviews of assessment and interventions in social work practice. The aim was to investigate the evidence and evidence gaps within four important areas for social work research and practice. Descriptive data on search strategies and domains were collected from four evidence maps, on Social Assistance, Substance Dependence, Care for older adults respectively for persons with disabilities. The scientific quality and scientific evidence were assessed. Key findings were summarised by analyzing and discussing common and specific elements in the evidence maps. The overview was undertaken in close collaboration between researchers with expertise in the field and a government agency. The overview identified both evidence and evidence gaps with respect to effects and experiences of interventions and assessment methods in four evidence maps. Evidence maps provide a comprehensive picture of the state of social services research and can thereby be of use to both researchers and practitioners, and in the production of evidence based social work.

  • Factors associated with positive work experience among professionals supporting people with intellectual disabilities: a comparative analysis of three welfare organisations in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Developmental Disabilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2047-3869 .- 2047-3877. ; 68:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given the crucial role professionals play in maintaining the well-being of people with intellectual disabilities, their views on work satisfaction are relevant to analyse. A comparative analysis that takes into account the support provided in different welfare organisations can be of certain importance. The aim is to analyse the most common aspects of professional work satisfaction in work with people with intellectual disabilities in schools, healthcare, and social services, and to apply a comparative analysis of such experience taking into account respondents' organisational affiliations. Data were collected using a digital questionnaire. Given the aim of the study, we drew on one open-ended question: 'describe aspects of your work that are most satisfactory for you'. The analysis shows that respondents associated positive work experience with seven aspects: autonomy, competence, nature of the work, collaboration, trust and recognition, work environment, and service users. Findings indicate that discretion is an important facet of work satisfaction among respondents in all three organisations. Flexibility, autonomy in decision-making, the ability to plan and act within certain institutional and legal frameworks, and the ability to prioritise among daily work assignments are empirical examples of this.

  • Professionals’ Perceptions of and Approach to Parents with Intellectual Disability : A Question of Knowledge?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International journal of social science studies. - : Redfame Publishing. - 2324-8033 .- 2324-8041. ; 1:2, s. 20-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on the encounters and interaction between support professionals and parents with intellectual disability (ID) points to certain complications in their relationship, as viewed from either side. To better understand the professionals’ perspective on their work with families where parents have ID, this exploratory study looks at the perceptions and experiences of 21 Swedish professionals in the field. The theory of social representations is used to analyse the results from one interview study and one focus group study. Representations of parenting among parents with ID were created by anchoring them in the professionals’ own personal experiences, and then generalizing them through a process of objectification in which they were transferred as “true knowledge” to other situations involving other parents. The findings are discussed in relation to different working conditions and the nature and role of knowledge, referring to various theoretical points of departure in the understanding of disability and children’s needs.

  • Access to Sweden's Legal System of Crime Victims With Intellectual Disability Involved in Prostitution Activities
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities. - : Wiley. - 1741-1122. ; 12:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Articles 12 and 13 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities encourage modifications to member-country justice systems to ensure equal access to justice for people with disabilities. The article explores Swedish professionals’ perceptions and experiences of the accessibility of the country's justice system to individuals with intellectual disability (ID) who are involved in prostitution and prostitution-like activities and have become victims of crime. Barriers to this accessibility, as well as the use of advocacy by, and cooperation between, professionals as ways to overcome them, are investigated. Thirteen open-themed, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 21 participants working for the police, public prosecutor's office, social services, and habilitation services. Participants described shortcomings in the implementation, and even lack, of access to the justice system for these individuals, including lack of clear policies and legislation that would take ID into account. Crime victims with ID, according to them, were frequently not considered as credible witnesses by the justice system and there was a need for alternative communication tools in court. Also, lack of knowledge about people with ID among other professionals was identified as a problem. The use of advocacy function and successful collaboration among relevant professionals were suggested as ways to improve accessibility. The findings indicate that the laws and directives to promote the access of people with ID to the Swedish justice system are poorly implemented in practice. To improve this access, better collaboration among professionals and more systematic use of them in an advocacy role to help and support persons with ID throughout the entire justice process are likely to be helpful.

  • Identifying the invisible: The experiences of prostitution among persons with intellectual disabilities: Implications for social work
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 1468-0173 .- 1741-296X. ; 13:2, s. 123-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary: This article explores a relatively uncharted research area. The focus of the analysis is on how professionals working in care provision units, specialized prostitution units, the police, social services and special schools detect and deal with prostitution among people with intellectual disabilities. The data were obtained primarily through focus group interviews. The study shows that organizational specialization in different authorities and services makes it difficult to identify and work with this group. Clients with complex problems tend to find themselves in between the jurisdictional fields of different authorities, meaning that many do not receive the support that they need. Findings: In recent decades social work has undergone increasing balkanization and specialization. Each particular organization is regulated by specific legislation, regulations, forms of knowledge and normative assumptions. Professionals working with people with intellectual disabilities have difficulties in detecting prostitution among their clients, whilst those who work with prostitution lack the knowledge and methods to work with intellectual disabilities. At the same time, social work with these individuals is conducted within a field of tension between the client0s right of self-determination and professionals’ responsibilities for their well-being. Applications: The study demonstrates that, with this type of complex problem, it is important to establish different types of collaboration between different organizations. However, due to the risk of increased control being detrimental to clients, collaboration needs to be founded on the client’s needs and right to self-determination.
