  • The ward atmosphere important for the psychosocial work environment of nursing staff in psychiatric in-patient care
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6955 .- 1472-6955. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The nursing staff working in psychiatric care have a demanding work situation, which may be reflected in how they view their psychosocial work environment and the ward atmosphere. The aims of the present study were to investigate in what way different aspects of the ward atmosphere were related to the psychosocial work environment, as perceived by nursing staff working in psychiatric in-patient care, and possible differences between nurses and nurse assistants.METHODS: 93 nursing staff working at 12 general psychiatric in-patient wards in Sweden completed two questionnaires, the Ward Atmosphere Scale and the QPSNordic 34+. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U-test, Spearman rank correlations and forward stepwise conditional logistic regression analyses.RESULTS: The data revealed that there were no differences between nurses and nurse assistants concerning perceptions of the psychosocial work environment and the ward atmosphere. The ward atmosphere subscales Personal Problem Orientation and Program Clarity were associated with a psychosocial work environment characterized by Empowering Leadership. Program Clarity was related to the staff's perceived Role Clarity, and Practical Orientation and Order and Organization were positively related to staff perceptions of the Organizational Climate.CONCLUSIONS: The results from the present study indicate that several ward atmosphere subscales were related to the nursing staff's perceptions of the psychosocial work environment in terms of Empowering Leadership, Role Clarity and Organizational Climate. Improvements in the ward atmosphere could be another way to accomplish improvements in the working conditions of the staff, and such improvements would affect nurses and nurse assistants in similar ways.

  • Towards Extending Web Map Services
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper begins with describing a case study of using the standard Web Map Services (WMS; from Open Geospatial Consortium) for mobile applications. There are two experiences from this case study that are interesting for the generalisation community: the amount of map information on the screen and the map file size. In this paper a usability study of the amount of map information is presented. The result from this study indicates that we should not only consider scale when determining which generalisation algorithms and/or parameters to use, but that we also should consider the amount of information. The paper also contains a short discussion about methods to restrict map file sizes in WMS.

  • An evaluation of measures for quantifying map information
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-2716. ; 65:3, s. 266-274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A real-time map must not contain too much information. Therefore, we need measures of map information that could guideline the selection of data layers and the real-time generalisation process. In this paper we evaluate measures of amount of information and distribution of information. The evaluation is performed by (1) defining measures, (2) implementing the measures, (3) computing the measures for some test maps, and finally (4) comparing the values of the measures with human judgement of the map information. For amount of information, we found that the measures number of objects, number of points and object line length had better correspondence with human judgement than object area. We also found that measures based on the size of Voronoi regions (of objects respective points) can be used for identifying distribution of information. The results are based on the testing of only building objects. Future work should extend the test, using all object types.

  • Analytical Estimation of Map Readability
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information. - : MDPI AG. - 2220-9964. ; 4:2, s. 418-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Readability is a major issue with all maps. In this study, we evaluated whether we can predict map readability using analytical measures, both single measures and composites of measures. A user test was conducted regarding the perceived readability of a number of test map samples. Evaluations were then performed to determine how well single measures and composites of measures could describe the map readability. The evaluation of single measures showed that the amount of information was most important, followed by the spatial distribution of information. The measures of object complexity and graphical resolution were not useful for explaining the map readability of our test data. The evaluations of composites of measures included three methods: threshold evaluation, multiple linear regression and support vector machine. We found that the use of composites of measures was better for describing map readability than single measures, but we could not identify any major differences in the results of the three composite methods. The results of this study can be used to recommend readability measures for triggering and controlling the map generalization process of online maps.

  • Exploring User Requirements for Non-visual Mobile Navigation Systems
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION - INTERACT 2009, PT I. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642036545 ; 5726, s. 754-757
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes an explorative user study of how two different user groups experience current, as well as envisioned new mobile navigation systems. Two groups have been the primary target in this study; a group of elderly people and a group of relatively young university students that were visually impaired. The study consisted of three parts: a focus group/test, a diary study and a design workshop where the users envisioned new kinds of interaction with mobile navigation systems by building and demonstrating low-fi prototypes. Information about user requirements for these types of applications is obtained and we observe features in the study design which are relevant for a wider range of mobile services.
