  • Corporate Social Responsibility in the Swedish Financial Services Sector : Translating an Idea into Practice
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on how popular ideas in society influence corporate behavior, as corporations adapt to normative ideas in society in order to achieve legitimacy. However, we need more knowledge about how ideas influence organizations and what happens when ideas enter in an organizational context. Hence, this thesis deals with the following research question: ‘How do actors transform ideas on being socially and environmentally responsible into practice?’ This question is studied empirically within corporations in the Swedish financial services sector. The thesis contributes to organizational institutional theory and to knowledge on the translation of ideas in organizational contexts.Based on analyses of the empirical observations six translation processes are identified. Incorporation is used to incorporate already legitimate external CSR elements into the organization. Localizing is used to give an idea local character by inscribing the idea into the history of the organization. De-coupling is used to translate ideas simultaneously and over time by adjusting the presentation of the organization’s business according to the relevant audience. Co-optation is used to incorporate external actors with know-how and legitimacy into internal processes. Organizing is used to gain internal acceptance for the idea. Blending is used to translate the idea into a modest adaptation to make it fit existing practice in the firm’s core business.Several of these translation processes are at work at the same time. As demonstrated in the study, new ways of presenting the organization as well as new activities appear as outcomes of translation. Translation processes that both influence presentation and practice are necessary for gaining legitimacy for the idea. The adoption of CSR in the studied financial services corporations could only partly be strategically planned. Results from the study also point to unintended and unexpected consequences of integrating social and environmental responsibility.

  • Incidence and pathogenesis of clinical relapse after herpes simplex encephalitis in adults.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of neurology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0340-5354 .- 1432-1459. ; 253:2, s. 163-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To study the occurrence of relapse of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) and to find out whether soluble activity markers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) indicate direct viral or immune- mediated events. METHODS: A consecutive series of 32 adult survivors of HSE were followed to determine the incidence of clinical relapse of HSE. Four patients had neurological deterioration interpreted as relapsing HSE. Four non-relapsing HSE cases were selected as matched controls. Fifty nine batched, paired CSF and serum samples from the eight HSE patients were analysed for soluble activity markers, predominantly cytokines and mediators (interferon-gamma, soluble CD8, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-10), amount of HSV-DNA and markers of glial and neuronal destruction (neurofilament protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, S-100-beta, and neuron specific enolase). RESULTS: Relapse of HSE was diagnosed in 3 of 26 (12 %) acyclovir-treated patients (5 episodes during 6.1 years of followup) and in 1 of 6 vidarabine-recipients. All relapses occurred from 1 to 4 months after acute HSE, except for a second relapse after 3.3 years in one patient. Computer tomography at relapses revealed few abnormalities apart from those found during the primary disease. Intravenous acyclovir and corticosteroids were given for 7-21 days in all the relapse patients. All relapse patients seemed to recover to the pre-relapse condition. HSV-DNA was demonstrated in CSF in all patients during the acute stage but not in any of 13 CSF samples taken during relapse phases. The HSV viral load during the acute stage of HSE was not higher or of longer duration in the relapsing patients than in the non-relapsing HSE controls. The levels of sCD8 were increased in nearly all CSF samples tested with peaks of sCD8 at one month of acute HSE. In all episodes of relapse, sCD8 peaks were detected during the first week at high levels. CSF levels of neuron-specific enolase, S-100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein were markedly lower at relapse than at the acute stage of HSV-1 encephalitis. CONCLUSION: The lack of demonstrable HSV DNA in CSF, the lack of acute CSF signs and the lack of signs of neural and glia cells destruction indicate that a direct viral cytotoxicity is not the major pathogenic mechanism in relapse. Instead, the pronounced CSF proinflammatory immunological response and the relative lack of CSF anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 response suggest immunologically-mediated pathogenicity.

  • Works of art: Aesthetic Ambitions in Design Hotels
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7722 .- 0160-7383. ; 39:4, s. 1995-2012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes a genre of hotels that has grown substantially the latest decades: namely one that includes hotels that go under names such as design hotels, boutique hotels, or "contemporary" hotels. It presents elements of the transnational discourse of this genre and shows how these are translated, materialized and localized. Individual hotels are used as illustrative examples of how discursively formed visions and ambitions are materialized and how identity claims are aesthetically communicated. The paper demonstrates how artifacts, employees and visitors are regarded as key components in an aesthetic communication with clear references to the transnational discourse. By focusing on discursive practices and their materialization in hotels, the paper describes and theorizes the way hotels seek to discursively conceptualize themselves as individual establishments that belong to the transnational hotel genre. The paper ends with a discussion of how the hotels, through their aesthetic communication, mobilize a conformist transnational identity discourse advocating singularity and uniqueness.

  • Culture and Identity in Organization Studies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Management: An advanced introduction. - 9789144093284 ; , s. 231-256
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter deals with culture and identity in management studies. An interest in culture and identity can be understood as an interest in the symbolic side of the organization that deals with meaning, interpretation, symbols and action (rather than behavior). The symbolic side of enterprise has always been present in organization studies; since the early 1980s, however, this has predominantly been understood and explored through the concepts of culture and identity. Here we will follow the chronology of how the two concepts became prominent in organization studies. That is, we are going to start with an account of the emergence of culture in organizational analysis, proceed with an account of the emergence of identity, and conclude with a summary of what we think are the main contributions of culture and identity in organization studies.
