  • Digital society generates new challenges on Child Welfare Services
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Croatian Medical Journal. - 0353-9504 .- 1332-8166. ; 58:1, s. 80-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital society has created a new situation that challenges the present discourse on public services. Since it is only a recent phenomenon, digital society has not yet been in-cluded in the broader filed of social work education and practice. In the present text, we focus on casework with children. The examples described in the text are taken from Scandinavian experiences and reflect our background and practice in social work with children. However, we dare to say that the situation is more or less the same in the rest of Europe, as illustrated by the presented social work examples and references from wider European context.

  • Perspectives on the COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout in 17 Countries : Reflexive Thematic and Frequency Analysis Based on the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Framework
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JMIR Human Factors. - : JMIR Publications. - 2292-9495. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: As the SARS-CoV-2 virus created a global pandemic and rapidly became an imminent threat to the health and lives of people worldwide, the need for a vaccine and its quick distribution among the population was evident. Due to the urgency, and on the back of international collaboration, vaccines were developed rapidly. However, vaccination rollouts showed different success rates in different countries and some also led to increased vaccine hesitancy. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the role of information sharing and context sensitivity in various vaccination programs throughout the initial COVID-19 vaccination rollout in different countries. Moreover, we aimed to identify factors in national vaccination programs related to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, safety, and effectiveness. Toward this end, multidisciplinary and multinational opinions from members of the Navigating Knowledge Landscape (NKL) network were analyzed. Methods: From May to July 2021, 25 completed questionnaires from 27 NKL network members were collected. These contributors were from 17 different countries. The responses reflected the contributors' subjective viewpoints on the status and details of the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in their countries. Contributors were asked to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (ie, SWOT) of the respective vaccination programs. The responses were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, followed by frequency analysis of identified themes according to the represented countries. Results: The perspectives of NKL network members showed a link between organizational elements of the vaccination rollout and the accompanying societal response, both of which were related to strengths and weaknesses of the process. External sociocultural variables, improved public communication around vaccination -related issues, ethical controversies, and the spread of disinformation were the dominant themes related to opportunities and challenges. In the SWOT 2x2 matrix, Availability and Barriers emerged as internal categories, whereas Transparent communication and promotion and Societal divide emerged as key external categories. Conclusions: Inventory of themes and categories inspired by elements of the SWOT framework provides an informative multidisciplinary perspective for effective implementation of public health strategies in the battle against COVID-19 or any future pandemics of a similar nature.

  • Epigenetics, society, and bio-objects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Croatian Medical Journal. - : Croatian Medical Journals. - 0353-9504 .- 1332-8166. ; 56:2, s. 166-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The molecular account of the environmental that epigenetics offers bestow it with paramount importance for biomedical perspective of health and disease and for social sciences perspective on human interactions and well-being. It offers new prospects for interventions to shape the health of both individuals and populations, and invokes its own ethical, legal, and social implications. We here propose treatment of the relation between epigenetics and society through the framework of bio-objectification. After discussing how epigenetic information becomes part of particular bio-identification and bio-objectification processes, we then propose the bio-objectification framework as a fruitful conceptual framework for the analysis of dynamic research and responsive regulatory landscape of this biotechnology.

  • Gene myths in public perception
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Public Understanding of Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0963-6625 .- 1361-6609. ; 21:4, s. 478-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I examine myths in the gene science debate, and their use as a tool in analysis of popular perceptions and public opinion of genetic science and gene technology. In daily language myth means something untrue, though theories of myth present them as carriers of knowledge and truth. I understand myth as a narrative, a cultural construct that aims to describe the world, its origin, and its constituent elements. I compare scholars’ usage of myths, considering their implications. I conclude that i) As an analytical tool the concept of myth is too loosely defined, or understood through theories which leave out context, social relations and interaction. This provides limited insight about myths and myth-making in present day society. ii) An updated understanding of myths, including location/context and interaction/process would enrich analysis.

  • Knowledge versus Education in the Margins : An Indigenous and Feminist Critique of Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Education Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2227-7102. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights the perceptions and expectations of knowledge that many people, including educators and policy makers, take for granted. Our focus of understanding is Indigenous studies and gender studies. Our aim is to show how modern education undermines these fields of studies. We use an autoethnographic method, reflecting more than 75 years as pupils/students and more than 90 years as educators. We have carefully chosen narratives of exposure to knowledge outside the educational system, as well as narratives of limitations posed upon us by the educational system. This narrative approach makes it possible for us to investigate and discuss our grief about areas of knowledge that society cries for, but the educational system continuously finds ways to resist. Our conclusion is that crucial knowledge is located outside the educational system, where individuals, groups, and communities cherish, protect, and guard knowledge that the educational system marginalises or excludes. As this knowledge is fundamental for life, our message is that the educational system needs to re-evaluate its strategies to stay relevant.

  • Making it Transparent. On Naming, Framing and Administrating Biobank Research on Native People in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: New genetics and society (Print). - Taylor & Francis Group : Informa UK Limited. - 1463-6778 .- 1469-9915. ; 32:3, s. 209-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite more than 50 years of genetic research on Sámi people in Sweden, there has been very little engagement with the ethical issues related to this research. My aim is to investigate the ethical challenges in biobank research on Sámi people, to identify ethical challenges that have been overlooked and to find ethical solutions. In my historical research inquiry of published material and interviews with people that have participated in this research, my research questions have been: How are blood samples from Sámi people collected, codified, governed and analyzed? What ethical strategies have been utilized? My main findings are: Sweden acquired biobank collections from Sámi people that are not registered or cannot be traced through the biobank register at the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. These collections entail ethical challenges concerning how the donors are identified, how the material is categorized, the regional ethical committees, governance and Sámi representation. My suggestions focus on transparency and traceability, competence and native peoples' rights and representation in biobank-related activities.
