  • On the needs and requirements arising from connected and automated driving
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sensor and Actuator Networks. - : MDPI AG. - 2224-2708. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Future 5G systems have set a goal to support mission-critical Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications and they contribute to an important step towards connected and automated driving. To achieve this goal, the communication technologies should be designed based on a solid understanding of the new V2X applications and the related requirements and challenges. In this regard, we provide a description of the main V2X application categories and their representative use cases selected based on an analysis of the future needs of cooperative and automated driving. We also present a methodology on how to derive the network related requirements from the automotive specific requirements. The methodology can be used to analyze the key requirements of both existing and future V2X use cases.

  • Introduction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cellular V2X for Connected Automated Driving. - : Wiley. ; , s. 1-20
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter presents a brief background and motivation for cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X), connected automated driving (CAD), and connected road user (CRU) services, including key technical terminology. Although sensor technologies have been and are used for ITS services, performance is severely degraded in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations and certain weather conditions. Hence, radio technologies are considered a crucial enabler for ITS, with a special focus on CAD. The chapter describes the ambitions of the telecommunication and automotive industries for a joint roadmap for CAD. It then goes into more detail about communication technologies for CAD and the standardization organizations. The chapter also provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book describes the ecosystem around CAD, including business aspects and standardization as well as technical solutions enabling successful delivery of such systems from a communication perspective.

  • Predictor Antenna: A Technique to Boost the Performance of Moving Relays
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 59:7, s. 80-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In future wireless systems, a large number of users may access the networks via moving relays (MRs) installed on top of vehicles. One of the main challenges of MRs is rapid channel variation which may make channel estimation, and its following procedures, difficult. To address these issues, various schemes are designed, among which predictor antenna (PA) is a candidate. The PA setup refers to a system with two (sets of) antennas on top of a vehicle, where the PA(s) positioned in front of the vehicle is(are) utilized to predict the channel state information required for data transmission to the receive antennas (RAs) aligned behind the PA. In this paper, we introduce the concept and the potentials of PA systems. Moreover, summarizing the field trials for PAs and the 3GPP attempts on (moving) relays, we compare the performance of different PA and non-PA methods for vehicle communications in both urban and rural areas with the PA setup backhauled through terrestrial or satellite technology, respectively. As we show, with typical parameter settings and vehicle speeds, a single-antenna PA-assisted setup can boost the backhaul throughput of MRs, compared to state-of-the-art open-loop schemes, by up to 50%.

  • On Models, Bounds, and Estimation Algorithms for Time-Varying Phase Noise
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 5th International Conference on Signal Processing and Communication Systems (ICSPCS2011). - 9781457711800 ; , s. Art Nr. 6140897-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, first, a new discrete-time model of phase noise for digital communication systems, which is a more accurate model compared to the classical Wiener model, is proposed based on a comprehensive continuous-time representation of time-varying phase noise, and statistical characteristics of this model are derived. Next, the non-data-aided (NDA) and decision-directed (DD) maximum-likelihood (ML) estimators of time-varying phase noise, using the proposed discrete-time model are derived. To evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for each estimation approach is derived and by using Monte-Carlo simulations it is shown that the mean-square error (MSE) of the proposed estimators converges to the CRLB at moderate signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Finally, simulation results show that the proposed estimators outperform existing estimation methods as the variance of the phase noise process increases.

  • On Integrated Access and Backhaul Networks: Current Status and Potentials
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. - 2644-125X. ; 1, s. 1374-1389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we introduce and study the potentials and challenges of integrated access and backhaul (IAB) as one of the promising techniques for evolving 5G networks. We study IAB networks from different perspectives. We summarize the recent Rel-16 as well as the upcoming Rel-17 3GPP discussions on IAB, and highlight the main IAB-specific agreements on different protocol layers. Also, concentrating on millimeter wave-based communications, we evaluate the performance of IAB networks in both dense and suburban areas. Using a finite stochastic geometry model, with random distributions of IAB nodes as well as user equipments (UEs) in a finite region, we study the service coverage rate defined as the probability of the event that the UEs' minimum rate requirements are satisfied. We present comparisons between IAB and hybrid IAB/fiber-backhauled networks where a part or all of the small base stations are fiber-connected. Finally, we study the robustness of IAB networks to weather and various deployment conditions and verify their effects, such as blockage, tree foliage, rain as well as antenna height/gain on the coverage rate of IAB setups, as the key differences between the fiber-connected and IAB networks. As we show, IAB is an attractive approach to enable the network densification required by 5G and beyond.

  • On Topology Optimization and Routing in Integrated Access and Backhaul Networks: A Genetic Algorithm-Based Approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. - 2644-125X. ; 2, s. 2273-2291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the problem of topology optimization and routing in integrated access and backhaul (IAB) networks, as one of the promising techniques for evolving 5G networks. We study the problem from different perspectives. We develop efficient genetic algorithm-based schemes for both IAB node placement and non-IAB backhaul link distribution, and evaluate the effect of routing on bypassing temporal blockages. Here, concentrating on millimeter wave-based communications, we study the service coverage probability, defined as the probability of the event that the user equipments' (UEs) minimum rate requirements are satisfied. Moreover, we study the effect of different parameters such as the antenna gain, blockage, and tree foliage on the system performance. Finally, we summarize the recent Rel-16 as well as the upcoming Rel-17 3GPP discussions on routing in IAB networks, and discuss the main challenges for enabling mesh-based IAB networks. As we show, with a proper network topology, IAB is an attractive approach to enable the network densification required by 5G and beyond.
