  • Implementation models for bio-based value chains in the South Baltic Region
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The regulatory, financial and technological difference between countries in the South Baltic Area calls for cross-border initiatives supporting knowledge transfer related to the development of a sustainable bioeconomy. This entails generic models on how to implement green technologies based on case-specific knowledge or operational settings. Such models can be used as a starting point for transposing technologies into new regional, national or international settings in the SBA.The aim of this report is to introduce four cross-border implementation models within the agricultural and agro-industrial sectors. The models show how bioeconomy concepts developed in the BioBIGG project can be transferred from one SME to another, and likewise from one region to another. The selected concepts have been chosen by the project partners based on conducted pre-feasibility assessments, innovation programs and business cases (for more information visit the BioBIGG homepage: https://biobigg.ruc.dk)

  • Miljöintegrering i praktisk tillämpning : En policystudie av två lokala stadsutvecklingsprocesser
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Dealing with environmental problems has become one of the most challenging political issues of our time. Since the Brundtland report in 1987, environmental policy integration (EPI) that is, the mainstreaming of environmental issues in all policy sectors has emerged as a viable policy solution. This has meant that responsibility for implementing environmental policy rests to a large extent on local authorities where environmental problems with both local and global consequences are expected to be handled. However, there is still a disagreement on what EPI means in day-to-day decision making. With a theoretical framework drawing from theory on policy change, policy entrepreneurship and the neoinstitutional “logic of appropriateness” the aim of this dissertation is to analyze how the integration of environmental considerations manifests itself in local policy processes, highlighting what factors foster or hinder EPI. To reach this aim, I have followed two urban development processes in Kristianstad. This research offers insights on how EPI varies through the policy process and how focus is placed mainly on certain environmental issues and chiefly defined as of local importance. My study suggest that arenas for coordination are critical to overcoming the perceived “gap” between EPI on a strategic level and its implementation. This can help to clarify responsibility allocation among bureaucrats and their leeway for interpretation when new issues comes up continuously during the processes and affect the conditions for EPI. Furthermore, the dissertation gives insights on how acting “entrepreneurially” can enable an environmental issue to be included and given priority. This can also be a barrier if the ones acting entrepreneurially are not part of the entire process because the issue might receive less attention. In addition, if too much attention is given to one issue it might overshadow other environmental issues. Conversely, acting according to “the logic of appropriateness” can enable EPI by enhancing a more all-encompassing perspective on environmental considerations and also function as a cautious approach to radical change by preventing measures taken in absence of democratic legitimacy. By using the two theoretical perspectives, “entrepreneurial” and “appropriate” agency, this dissertation offers important insights into how different ways of acting interact and affect EPI and its outcome.

  • The Role of Legal Theory in Legal Education: A Reflection on Professional and Scholarly Ideals in Nordic Legal Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal on Law and Society. - : Umea University Library. - 2002-7788. ; 4:3, s. 1-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article addresses the role of legal theory in legal education. Today, a multitude of perspectives is present within legal theory and, as a subject, it is not as distinct as it is sometimes claimed to be. It is evident when considering syllabuses in the Nordic countries that nearly all LLM programmes have ambitions to teach legal theory as embracing a multitude of theoretical and methodological perspectives. This multitude of perspectives promises adaptable content for the subject of legal theory in various legal contexts, and could facilitate a reflection on how knowledge is acquired and why. The challenge addressed in the article is the presence of explicit or implicit ideas from the subject of legal theory as comprising a coherent “legal method” and a specific list of accepted theories. The persistence of such ideas is scrutinised in this article with help of the concepts of “professional knowledge” and “scholarly knowledge”. In order to navigate the complex field of legal theories, students need meta-reflective skills, which means the ability to reflect upon the underlying complexity and multitude of the subject. This is shown by a case study from the Department of Law at the University of Gothenburg, together with examples from curricula and textbooks from legal theory courses across the Nordic countries.

  • On the needs and requirements arising from connected and automated driving
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sensor and Actuator Networks. - : MDPI AG. - 2224-2708. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Future 5G systems have set a goal to support mission-critical Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications and they contribute to an important step towards connected and automated driving. To achieve this goal, the communication technologies should be designed based on a solid understanding of the new V2X applications and the related requirements and challenges. In this regard, we provide a description of the main V2X application categories and their representative use cases selected based on an analysis of the future needs of cooperative and automated driving. We also present a methodology on how to derive the network related requirements from the automotive specific requirements. The methodology can be used to analyze the key requirements of both existing and future V2X use cases.

  • The living standards of the labouring classes in Sweden, 1750–1900: Evidence from rural probate inventories
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents new estimates of the living standards among the rural labouring classes in Sweden from 1750 to 1900. Starting with a database of more than 1,000 probate inventories of rural landless and semi-landless people from the benchmark years 1750, 1800, 1850 and 1900, we study the development for crofters in particular. We measure their assets and debts in great detail, mapping the development of material living standards over time. We show that the typically used real wage approach to living standards gives only a partial impression of the development of proletarian living standards. Above all, the decline of Swedish living standards from 1750 to 1800 is overestimated because of overreliance on grain prices for the CPI. We show the advantages of using probate inventories for studying living standards, since they give a composite estimate of households’ material conditions, no matter what combinations of wage-labour, subsistence work and by-employment are used. This has relevance not only for Sweden, but for studies of historical living standards in general.

  • Introduction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cellular V2X for Connected Automated Driving. - : Wiley. ; , s. 1-20
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter presents a brief background and motivation for cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X), connected automated driving (CAD), and connected road user (CRU) services, including key technical terminology. Although sensor technologies have been and are used for ITS services, performance is severely degraded in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations and certain weather conditions. Hence, radio technologies are considered a crucial enabler for ITS, with a special focus on CAD. The chapter describes the ambitions of the telecommunication and automotive industries for a joint roadmap for CAD. It then goes into more detail about communication technologies for CAD and the standardization organizations. The chapter also provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book describes the ecosystem around CAD, including business aspects and standardization as well as technical solutions enabling successful delivery of such systems from a communication perspective.

  • Economic viability of protein concentrate production from green biomass of intermediate crops: A pre-feasibility study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green biomass is a major potential source of proteins for food and feed. This pre-feasibility study evaluates the use of green biomass of buckwheat, phacelia, hemp and oilseed radish grown as intermediate crops (IC) as a feedstock for production of protein concentrates to produce protein-rich food and feed products. We investigated the biomass yield, protein concentration and protein recovery potential of non-fertilized IC, nitrogen-fertilized IC and IC intercropped with legumes, harvested in late summer to autumn during 2017 and 2018 in southern Sweden. In addition, economic assessment of potential protein and fibre feed and food products were evaluated. The results showed that IC fertilized with 40 kg ha1 N and intercropping with legumes contributed to a higher biomass dry matter (DM) yield of 4.9e5.8 t ha1 as compared to between 2.2 and 3.1 t ha1 for non-fertilized IC. Intercropping with legumes also resulted in higher protein yield of 154 g kg1 vs. 103 g kg1 for non-fertilized IC. Among IC, hemp, phacelia and oilseed radish showed up to ca. 25% higher DM yield and up to ca. 70% higher protein concentration as compared to buckwheat. Higher DM yield was obtained when IC were harvested in October and November than in August and September. Economic assessment was made on two feasible protein production pathways; (A) Green and white proteins and (B) total recoverable combined protein fraction (CPF). For all IC, cost per t DM was higher in August due to lower biomass yield as compared to other harvesting months. Nitrogen concentration was the main factor determining the size of revenues. Nitrogen concentration was 34% higher in 2018 compared to 2017 and therefore resulted in higher revenues in that year. Intercropping resulted in higher protein content and therefore contributed to lower breakeven prices of recovered green proteins for all IC. Breakeven price analyses showed that green protein and CPF were economically feasible to market as both bulk and premium products depending on lower (2 V kg1 ) or higher (2e10 V kg1 ) price ranges, respectively. The results demonstrate that use of IC biomass could be a feasible option to produce high value protein-rich products, which can contribute extra income from IC for farmers.
