  • ESS nBLM : Beam loss monitors based on fast neutron detection
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: HB2018 - Proceedings of the 61st ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics Workshop on High-Intensity and High-Brightness Hadron Beams. - 9783954502028 ; , s. 404-409
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new type of Beam Loss Monitor (BLM) system is being developed for use in the European Spallation Source (ESS) linac, primarily aiming to cover the low energy part (proton energies between 3-100 MeV). In this region of the linac, typical BLM detectors based on charged particle detection (i.e. Ionization Chambers) are not appropriate because the expected particle fields will be dominated by neutrons and photons. Another issue is the photon background due to the RF cavities, which is mainly due to field emission from the electrons from the cavity walls, resulting in bremsstrahlung photons. The idea for the ESS neutron sensitive BLM system (ESS nBLM) is to use Micromegas detectors specially designed to be sensitive to fast neutrons and insensitive to low energy photons (X and gammas). In addition, the detectors must be insensitive to thermal neutrons, because those neutrons may not be directly correlated to beam losses. The appropriate configuration of the Micromegas operating conditions will allow excellent timing, intrinsic photon background suppression and individual neutron counting, extending thus the dynamic range to very low particle fluxes.

  • The light-yield response of a NE-213 liquid-scintillator detector measured using 2–6 MeV tagged neutrons
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 840, s. 121-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The response of a NE-213 liquid-scintillator detector has been measured using tagged neutrons from 2 to 6 MeV originating from an Am/Be neutron source. The neutron energies were determined using the time-of-flight technique. Pulse-shape discrimination was employed to discern between gamma-rays and neutrons. The behavior of both the fast (35 ns) and the combined fast and slow (475 ns) components of the neutron scintillation-light pulses were studied. Three different prescriptions were used to relate the neutron maximum energy-transfer edges to the corresponding recoil-proton scintillation-light yields, and the results were compared to simulations. The overall normalizations of parametrizations which predict the fast or total light yield of the scintillation pulses were also tested. Our results agree with both existing data and existing parametrizations. We observe a clear sensitivity to the portion and length of the neutron scintillation-light pulse considered.

  • On the Swedish National Grade School for Digital Technologies in Education – GRADE : Expectations and experiences of doctorial students and supervisors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ICERI2018 Proceedings. - Sevilla : IATED. - 9788409059485 ; , s. 769-774
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish National Graduate School for Digital Technologies in Education (GRADE) is a cooperative venture between six Swedish universities established during 2018. Within the field of educational sciences and in the area of digital technologies in education, GRADE aims to strengthen the expertise in the area and to increase national and international cooperation in research training activities.Over a number of years, and from multitude of sources (cf. Brown & Davis, 2004; Fisher, Higgins & Loveless, 2006; Kafai & Resnick 1996), research has stressed that increased digitalization in schools leads to a complexity that needs to be taken into account on different levels, from different perspectives and with different designs, methodologies and theoretical perspectives (cf. Olofsson, Lindberg, Fransson & Hauge, 2015; Price, Jewitt & Brown, 2013; Tondeur, Valcke & van Braak, 2008). At a micro-level, the learning situation of students, teachers and school-leaders changes and it becomes important to deepen the knowledge about the impact digital technologies has on the fundamental conditions for teaching and learning of different school subjects (cf. Chun, Kern & Smith 2016; Leung & Baccaglini-Frank, 2017). On a macro-level, conditions for education as such changes and digital technologies becomes an important object of study as agents of change (Wong & Li, 2008). The digitalization of K-12 schools has long been highlighted in policy as a necessity (cf. Kirkman et al, 2002; OECD, 2010). However, research and evaluations (cf. Fransson et al, 2012; OECD, 2015; Wastiau et al, 2013) show that many substantial challenges remain. One of the fundamental pillars of GRADE is the interdisciplinary approach. Several disciplines are present (Applied IT, Curriculum studies, Education, Informatics, Technology and Learning, Educational work, Work-interated Learning) in researching digital technologies in K-12 schools with the ambition to contribute to the continued implementation, integration and use of digital technologies in Swedish K-12 schools that stems from the evidence-based knowledge produced within the activities of GRADE. The research within GRADE will be characterized by close cooperation with stakeholders from school practice, with the aim to contribute to concrete school development. In GRADE, a multi-level approach that involves multiple layers or levels of school activities will be encouraged. When possible, studies will be longitudinal. This will imply studies from an organizational and management perspective, e.g. studies of school leaders and other members of senior management positions responsible for digital technology use and implementation. Also implied are studies of teachers' teaching practices and didactical considerations, as well as studies of the students in classrooms and their learning using digital technologies. This will also imply that several issues with a bearing on the digitalization of education, for example regarding school policy, teaching, learning, assessment and professional development will be researched from different perspectives and with different methodological approaches. In this paper, these points of departure will be explored based on the expectations and experiences of the first twelve admitted doctoral students and their supervisors.

  • Tagging fast neutrons from an 241Am/9Be source
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Radiation and Isotopes. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-8043 .- 1872-9800. ; 98, s. 74-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shielding, coincidence, and time-of-flight measurement techniques are employed to tag fast neutrons emitted from an 241Am/9Be source resulting in a continuous polychromatic energy-tagged beam of neutrons with energies up to 7MeV. The measured energy structure of the beam agrees qualitatively with both previous measurements and theoretical calculations.

  • Boreal Forest Landscape Restoration in the Face of Extensive Forest Fragmentation and Loss
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031159886 ; , s. 491-510:74, s. 491-510
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical conditions that provide a natural legacy for defining restoration targets are not applicable without adjusting these targets to expected future conditions. Prestoration approaches, defined as restoration that simultaneously considers past, present, and future conditions with a changing climate, are necessary to advance the protection of biodiversity and the provisioning of ecosystem services. Large areas of boreal forest landscapes are transformed and degraded by industrial forestry practices. With largely fragmented and too-small areas of remaining high conservation value forests, protection and preservation are insufficient and must be complemented by active restoration in the managed forest matrix. Successful forest landscape restoration incorporates varied spatiotemporal scales and resolutions to compose restoration routes that best reflect the expected future sustainability challenges as well as planning and governance frameworks.

  • Bistable nanoelectromechanical devices
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 84:20, s. 4074-4076
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A combined transmission electron microscopy-scanning tunneling microscopy (TEM-STM) technique has been used to investigate the force interactions of silicon and germanium nanowires with gold electrodes. The I(V) data obtained typically show linear behavior between the gold electrode and silicon nanowires at all contact points, whereas the linearity of I(V) curves obtained for germanium nanowires were dependent on the point of contact. Bistable silicon and germanium nanowire-based nanoelectromechanical programmable read-only memory (NEMPROM) devices were demonstrated by TEM-STM. These nonvolatile NEMPROM devices have switching potentials as low as 1 V and are highly stable making them ideal candidates for low-leakage electronic devices.

  • Determination of the lifetime width of the argon L1-hole state
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 47:2, s. 1539-1542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The width of the argon 2s level was experimentally obtained from x-ray emission-spectroscopy (2.25+/-0.15 eV) and x-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy (XPS) (2.25+/-0.05 eV) measurements. A theoretical value of 1.85 eV was obtained by a Green's-function calculation. A high-energy satellite located 2.7+/-0.2 eV above the L1-M2,3 x-ray emission transition was confirmed and identified as the 2s(-1)3p-1-->3p-2 double-hole transition. The XPS measurement of the argon 2s ionization energy gave a value of 326.25(5) eV.

  • Making the invisible visible : Determining an accurate national distribution of Elater ferrugineus in the United Kingdom using pheromones
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Insect Conservation and Diversity. - : Wiley. - 1752-458X .- 1752-4598. ; 10:4, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, conservation-status saproxylic beetle species in the UK have been monitored by chance findings or by monitor-based observational studies. Here, using Elater ferrugineus as our target species, we present the first national distribution survey carried out in the UK or across mainland Europe on such a species using chemicals produced by the insect. Over 3 years, mark-release-recapture studies were performed across the UK, using 416 lured (pheromone) traps monitored by volunteer recorders; the first survey in Europe to do so. Traps were baited with 7-methyloctyl- (Z)-4-decenoate, a compound previously identified as a female sex pheromone. The results were used to plot a distribution map and investigate factors that may influence the distribution, including summer temperatures, possible habitat availability and larval food source. The survey revealed a south-eastern distribution of E. ferrugineus in the UK, which was suggested by previous casual studies. A correlative model was fitted to the data, indicating that 55% of the variation in the distribution of E. ferrugineus was explained by climatic variables (temperature and wind speed).

  • Equal treatment in working life for people with disabilities : A Sweden and Norway Perspective
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: Disabilities: Insights from Across Fields and Around the World Vol 3. - Westport : Praeger. - 9780313346040 - 9780313346101 ; , s. 155-165
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In November 2000, the European Union issued a directive establishing a general framework for promoting equal treatment in employment and outlawing discrimination based on religion, beliefs, disability, age, and sexual orientation (the “framework for the equal treatment directive,” FETD). Equal treatment and non-discrimination are among the most well-developed components of social policy in the EU. In Scandinavia, antidiscrimination policy is a relatively new type of regulatory policy that approaches disability from the following perspective: “The EU . . . sees disability as a social construct. The EU social model of disability stresses the environmental barriers in society which prevent the full participation of people with disabilities in society. These barriers must be removed”. The main aim of this chapter is to examine and discuss how this new approach relates to existing policies in Norway and Sweden. In this chapter, we more closely examine how Norwegian and Swedish social policies define disability in relation to the EU’s FETD directive. We examine the relationship between the traditional methods of supporting people with disabilities in Swedish and Norwegian social policy and the principles put forth in the EU’s FETD directive.

  • Hypercoagulability in acute bleeding peptic ulcer disease assessed by thrombin-antithrombin III concentrations.
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgery. - 1102-4151 .- 1741-9271. ; 159:3, s. 167-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To find out whether patients with acute bleeding peptic ulcers have hypercoagulable blood.DESIGN: Prospective open study.SETTING: District hospital in Sweden.SUBJECTS: 54 consecutive patients with duodenal ulcer (n = 25) and gastric ulcer (n = 29) admitted with haematemesis or melaena, or both.INTERVENTIONS: Diagnosis verified on admission by endoscopy, and healing was examined at follow up. Consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and smoking habits, were recorded.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Coagulation of the blood monitored by concentrations of plasma thrombin-antithrombin III (TAT) complex in samples obtained on admission for the acute bleeding episode and at follow up 1-2 months later.RESULTS: The plasma TAT complex concentrations were raised during the acute bleeding episode (p < 0.001) compared with an age matched reference group. The TAT complex concentrations measured at follow up had returned to the reference range in all patients, whether or not their ulcers had healed.CONCLUSION: The results indicate that patients with acute haemorrhage from peptic ulcers have hypercoagulable blood during the acute episode.
