  • Boreal Forest Landscape Restoration in the Face of Extensive Forest Fragmentation and Loss
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031159886 ; , s. 491-510:74, s. 491-510
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical conditions that provide a natural legacy for defining restoration targets are not applicable without adjusting these targets to expected future conditions. Prestoration approaches, defined as restoration that simultaneously considers past, present, and future conditions with a changing climate, are necessary to advance the protection of biodiversity and the provisioning of ecosystem services. Large areas of boreal forest landscapes are transformed and degraded by industrial forestry practices. With largely fragmented and too-small areas of remaining high conservation value forests, protection and preservation are insufficient and must be complemented by active restoration in the managed forest matrix. Successful forest landscape restoration incorporates varied spatiotemporal scales and resolutions to compose restoration routes that best reflect the expected future sustainability challenges as well as planning and governance frameworks.

  • Combined basic and fine chemical biorefinery concepts with integration of processes at different technology readiness levels
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Computer Aided Chemical Engineering. - 1570-7946. ; 43, s. 1577-1582
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Biorefineries offer promising alternatives to the use of fossil fuels to produce energy and chemicals. This work describes the development of a biorefinery concept to produce adipic acid from Swedish forest residues and lutein from micro-algae. A description is provided for each process line available, its technology readiness level (TRL) and the tools available to model it. Scenarios of the integrated concept are built with associated material flow analysis. Key results of the material inventory of the base case scenario are presented as well as insights into the development of further scenarios. Material flow inventories can then be further used for economic and environmental assessment. Major challenges of integration are discussed in terms of uncertainties and data gaps for processes with low TRL such as scaling up lab experiments, understanding the restrictions of material recycling and its impact on process performance. The feedback given through these scenarios can help guide further experimental efforts.

  • Fate of trace metals in anaerobic digestion
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biogas science and technology. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319219936 - 9783319219929 ; , s. 171-195
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A challenging, and largely uncharted, area of research in the field of anaerobic digestion science and technology is in understanding the roles of trace metals in enabling biogas production. This is a major knowledge gap and a multifaceted problem involving metal chemistry; physical interactions of metal and solids; microbiology; and technology optimization. Moreover, the fate of trace metals, and the chemical speciation and transport of trace metals in environments often agricultural lands receiving discharge waters from anaerobic digestion processes simultaneously represents challenges for environmental protection and opportunities to close process loops in anaerobic digestion.

  • Towards versatile access networks (Chapter 3)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Towards Sustainable and Trustworthy 6G: Challenges, Enablers, and Architectural Design. - 9781638282396 ; , s. 40-120
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Compared to its previous generations, the 5th generation (5G) cellular network features an additional type of densification, i.e., a large number of active antennas per access point (AP) can be deployed. This technique is known as massive multipleinput multiple-output (mMIMO) [1]. Meanwhile, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) evolution, e.g., in channel state information (CSI) enhancement, and also on the study of a larger number of orthogonal demodulation reference signal (DMRS) ports for MU-MIMO, was one of the Release 18 of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP Rel-18) work item. This release (3GPP Rel-18) package approval, in the fourth quarter of 2021, marked the start of the 5G Advanced evolution in 3GPP. The other items in 3GPP Rel-18 are to study and add functionality in the areas of network energy savings, coverage, mobility support, multicast broadcast services, and positioning

  • Psychophysiological Interaction and Empathic Cognition for Human-robot Cooperative Work (PsyIntEC)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Gearing Up and Accelerating Cross‐fertilization between Academic and Industrial Robotics Research in Europe. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319038377 - 9783319038384 ; , s. 283-299
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the PsyIntEC project is to explore affective and cognitive modeling of humans in human-robot interaction (HRI) as a basis for behavioral adaptation. To achieve this we have explored human affective perception of relevant modalities in human-human and human-robot interaction on a collaborative problem-solving task using psychophysiological measurements. The experiments conducted have given us valuable insight into the communicational and affective queues interplaying in such interactions from the human perspective. The results indicate that there is an increase in both positive and negative emotions when interacting with robots compared to interacting with another human or solving the task alone, but detailed analysis on shorter time segments is required for the results from all sensors to be conclusive and significant.
