  • Design of navigational support for task oriented reading in e-newspapers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 29th IRIS. ; , s. 21-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to explore how the navigational support in an e-newspaper should be  designed to support the users task oriented reading behavior. An e-newspaper is a newspaper produced on e-paper, which combines the readability of paper, with the possibilities of digital media such as streaming updates, interactivity and multimedia. One advantage with the e-paper technology is its high contrast and readability; it uses no backlight and only consumes power when the pages are updated. This study is part of the European DigiNews project where three high fidelity e-newspaper prototypes has been produced in cooperation with readers and newspaper designers. These prototypes have been tested on 36 readers to examine how to design navigational support to aid task oriented reading. Six guidelines for have been generated from the results of the study which covers information structure, hyperlinks, feedback and visual cues.

  • A Milieu for Innovation : Defining Living Labs
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Stimulating recovery. - New York : ISPIM. - 9789522148643 - 9522148644 ; , s. 12-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new trend of user involvement in open innovation processes has emerged. Concurring with this trend the Living Lab concept has been re-vitalized. This concept has attracted attention lately, but there exist no coherent view. In this paper we discuss and define the concept and propose five key components and five key principles for Living Labs based on experiences from over 30 development and research projects within two Living Labs, Botnia Living Lab and Halmstad Living Lab. The key components are: ICT & Infrastructure; Management; Partners & Users; Research; and Approach. The key principles are: Openness; Influence; Realism; Value; and Sustainability. Our proposed definition of a Living Lab is: A Living Lab is a user-centric innovation milieu built on every-day practice and research, with an approach that facilitates user influence in open and distributed innovation processes engaging all relevant partners in real-life contexts, aiming to create sustainable values.

  • A fragmented environmental state? Analysing spatial compliance patterns for the case of transparency legislation in China
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2509-7946 .- 2509-7954. ; 1:2, s. 471-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Do Chinese cities compete for investments with lax environmental law enforcement? The here presented study suggests that this is true for some municipalities but not all of them. Based on data for 126 key environmental protection cities and regional economic hubs between 2010 and 2012 we show that economic decentralization and political centralization both shape spatial patterns of compliance with environmental transparency legislation. Our results give reason to suppose that the Chinese economy moved beyond homogenous preferences for low-cost regulatory arrangements. The emerging jurisdictional interaction is in line with a Tiebout sorting process, where cities compete with diverse factor packages to attract an optimal amount of investments.

  • Are Model Cities an Effective Instrument for Urban Environmental Governance?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Greening China's Urban Governance : Tackling Environmental and Sustainability Challenges - Tackling Environmental and Sustainability Challenges. - Singapore : Springer Nature Singapore. - 2367-1068 .- 2367-105X. - 9789811307393 - 9789811307409 ; 7, s. 25-49
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the 1980s, China’s central government has created various model and incentive schemes aimed at systematically and concurrently promoting innovative approaches for protecting the urban ecological environment. In this context, programmes such as the ‘model city for protecting the environment’, ‘garden city’, ‘eco-city’, or ‘low-carbon city’ have become an integral part of China’s system for urban environmental governance. However, the role of these policy-incentive schemes for promoting best practice is only partly understood. This chapter contributes to the literature with a conceptualization of model cities as a dynamic governance instrument. The analysis suggests that the distance between programme objectives and local practices increases with programme maturity. Model-city schemes inevitably reach a point of saturation once a competing programme provides new opportunities to gain political and economic rents.

  • Environmental governance with Chinese characteristics : are environmental model cities a good example for other municipalities?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2509-7946 .- 2509-7954. ; 4, s. 111-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Model programs such as the ‘environmental protection model city’ have become an inherent part of China’s urban environmental governance. The role of these incentive schemes for promoting best practice, however, has been neglected so far. In this study, we show that model city programs raise the bar in terms of environmental standards. What is more, model cities have a positive impact on regional economic development. We deploy a spatial Durbin model to measure best practice diffusion among 126 key environmental protection cities between 2009 and 2012. The results suggest that environmental model cities are better performers on average. We also find evidence for a positive spillover effect. Diffusion patterns are multi-layered where economic proximity is the most important dimension, followed by physical colocation and administrative hierarchy.

  • IoT Enabled Process Innovation : Exploring Sensor-Based Digital Service Design Through an Information Requirements Framework
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Internet of Things. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030156503 - 9783030156510 ; , s. 105-120
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through digitisation of physical artefacts and environments, the Internet of Things carries vast potential for process innovation. However, navigation of the quickly evolving technological landscape and identification of emerging opportunities for value creation remains challenging. To this end, we combine existing frameworks on information requirements, IT capability, and business value of IT. We evaluate the usability of these frameworks for IoT enabled innovation in our analysis of two sensor-based process innovation projects. We investigate the fit between process characteristics and technological functionality, and the implications of this alignment. Our analysis demonstrates that the framework provides a practically useful and theoretically coherent conceptual device for analyzing process characteristics and digital options to innovate processes. Furthermore, we find that IoT sensors are well suited to address connectivity and uncertainty requirements. However, in order to leverage them to address high equivocality requirements designers need deep contextual understanding to align IoT capability with information requirements.

  • Daily physical activity and its relation to aerobic fitness in children aged 8-11 years.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Applied Physiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1439-6327 .- 1439-6319. ; 96:5, s. 587-592
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A positive relationship between daily physical activity and aerobic fitness exists in adults. Studies in children have given conflicting results, possibly because of differences in methods used to assess daily physical activity and fitness. No study regarding daily physical activity and fitness in children has been published, where fitness has been assessed by direct measurement of maximum oxygen uptake and related to daily physical activity intensities by accelerometers. We examined 248 children (140 boys and 108 girls), aged 7.9-11.1 years. Maximum workload and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2PEAK) by indirect calorimetry were measured during a maximum bicycle ergometer exercise test. Exercise capacity was adjusted for body mass and (body mass)(2/3). Daily physical activity was evaluated by accelerometers, worn around the waist for 4 days. Mean accelerometer counts and time spent in vigorous physical activity were calculated. VO2PEAK was correlated with mean accelerometer counts (r=0.23 for boys and r=0.23 for girls, both P < 0.05), but somewhat better with time spent in vigorous activity (r=0.32 for boys, r=0.30 for girls, both P < 0.05). All results remained virtually the same regardless of the method used to adjust for differences in body size.

  • Criteria for social software implementation in Living Labs
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ISM 2012 workshop proceedings. - Trondheim : Akademika forlag. - 9788232100880 ; , s. 32-40
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Halmstad Living Lab has extended experience of working closely with end-users in cocreation projects and has, during recent years, started to experiment more and more with social software and other online software programs to include users in the innovation process. In this paper we draw upon our experiences as a Living Lab to generate a framework that details key criteria for implementation of social software in a Living Lab setting. The framework can be used to guide successful implementation of social software in co-creation projects and to help evaluate or assess proposed solutions to be used in a Living Lab setting to support user involvement.
