  • Preoperative Electrophysiology in Patients With Ulnar Nerve Entrapment at the Elbow-Prediction of Surgical Outcome and Influence of Age, Sex and Diabetes.

    • The impact of preoperative electrophysiology on outcome of surgical treatment in ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (UNE) is not clarified. Our aim was to evaluate influence of preoperative electrophysiologic grading on outcome and analyse how age, sex, and in particular diabetes affect such grading. Electrophysiologic protocols for 406 UNE cases, surgically treated at two hand surgery units reporting to the Swedish National Quality Register for Hand Surgery (HAKIR; 2010-2016), were retrospectively assessed, and graded as normal, reduced conduction velocity, conduction block or axonal degeneration. Outcome of surgery after primary and revision surgery was evaluated using QuickDASH and a doctor reported outcome measure (DROM) grading. No differences in QuickDASH or DROM were found between the four groups with different electrophysiologic grading preoperatively, or at three and 12 months or at follow up, respectively. When dichotomizing the electrophysiologic grading into normal and pathologic electrophysiology, cases with normal electrophysiology had worse QuickDASH than cases with pathologic electrophysiology preoperatively (p=0.046). Presence of a conduction block or axonal degeneration indicated a worse outcome by DROM grading (p=0.011). Primary surgeries had electrophysiologic more pronounced nerve pathology compared to revision surgeries (p=0.017). Cases of older age, men, and those with diabetes had more severe electrophysiologic nerve affection (p<0.0001). In the linear regression analysis, increasing age (unstandardized B=0.03, 95% CI 0.02-0.04; p<0.0001) and presence of diabetes (unstandardized B=0.60, 95% CI 0.25-0.95; p=0.001) were associated with a higher risk of a worse electrophysiologic classification. Female sex was associated with a better electrophysiologic grading (unstandardized B=-0.51, 95% CI -0.75- -0.27; p<0.0001). We conclude that older age, male sex, and concomitant diabetes are associated with more severe preoperative electrophysiologic nerve affection. Preoperative electrophysiologic grade of ulnar nerve affection may influence surgical outcome.

    • Designing accurate, robust and cost-effective systems is an important aspect of the research on self-driving vehicles. Radar is a common part of many existing automotive solutions and it is robust to adverse weather and lighting conditions, as such it can play an important role in the design of a self-driving vehicle. In this paper, a radar-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm using variational Bayesian expectation maximization (VBEM) is presented. The VBEM translates the inference problem to an optimization one. It provides an efficient and powerful method to estimate the unknown data association variables as well as the map of the environment as perceived by a radar and the unknown trajectory of the vehicle.

    • We propose a tracking framework jointly estimating the position of a single extended object and the set of radar reflectors that it contains. The reflectors are assumed to lie on a line structure, but the number of reflectors and their positions on the line are unknown. Additionally, we incorporate an accurate radar sensor model considering the resolution capabilities of the sensor. The evaluation of the framework on radar measurements shows promising results.

  • Framtidens gröna praktiker : förutsättningar för omställningsagenter i mat- och transportsektorn

    • Rapporten tar sin utgångspunkt i att det akuta klimatläget kräver nya mer cirkulära sätt att producera och konsumera varor och tjänster på. I rapporten ger vi exempel på lovande gröna initiativ och pekar på vilka svårigheter omställningsagenterna bakom dem möter. Fem ideella och vinstdrivande initiativ från matsektorn och transportsektorn studeras. I matsektorn finns det stor miljöpotential i att minska svinnet. Proteinskifte, från animaliskt kött och mejeri, till vegetabiliska motsvarigheter leder till en mer effektiv resurshantering. Det gäller särskilt när produktionen är lokal och långväga transporter kan undvikas. Hur mycket vatten och landareal som produktionen kräver påverkar miljöpotentialen. Produktion av havre- och ärtprodukter, som studerats i rapporten, kan leva upp till sådana krav, med villkoret att de ingår i cirkulära flöden där det inte produceras överskott. När det gäller transportsektorn har initiativ som stärker cykling en stor miljöpotential. Att dela på eller återbruka cyklar leder till mer effektiv resurshantering. Potentialen villkoras dock om användarna av cykelpooler eller cykelkök parallellt köper egna cyklar och kör bil. Med hjälp av teorier från miljö- och omställningsforskning belyser vi att omställningsagenter verkar inom regimer som bygger på linjära praktiker och fossila beroenden. Motståndet som omställnings[1]agenter möter kan vara mycket konkret, som att det är svårt att hitta betalningsvilliga användare men även handla om subtila processer som att behöva tilltala målgrupper som konsumenter snarare än medborgare. Omställningsagenterna tvingas på olika sätt anpassa sig till regimens spelregler, oavsett om det strider mot egna värderingar och visioner. De studerade initiativen illustrerar möjliga sätt att organisera framtiden på. Det gäller särskilt de ideella verksamheterna. I likhet med tidigare studier visar rapporten att förutsättningen för att omställningsagenter ska kunna visa vägen mot en grönare framtid är begränsad om inte lagstiftning, subventioner, och nya normer om ett gott liv stöttar dem.

However, in the original formulation of the cardinalized probability hypothesis density (CPHD) filter, this type of model is not supported; instead appearing targets are modeled by spontaneous birth only. In this paper we derive the necessary equations for a CPHD filter for the case when the process model also includes target spawning. For this generalized filter, the cardinality prediction formula might become computationally intractable for general spawning models. However, when the cardinality distribution of the spawning targets is either Bernoulli or Poisson, we derive expressions that are practical and computationally efficient. Simulations show that the proposed filter responds faster to a change in target number due to spawned targets than the original CPHD filter. In addition, the performance of the filter, considering the optimal subpattern assignment (OSPA), is improved when having an explicit spawning model.

    • For self-localization, a detailed and reliable map of the environment can be used to relate sensor data to static features with known locations. This paper presents a method for construction of detailed radar maps that describe the expected intensity of detections. Specifically, the measurements are modelled by an inhomogeneous Poisson process with a spatial intensity function given by the sum of a constant clutter level and an unnormalized Gaussian mixture. A substantial difficulty with radar mapping is the presence of data association uncertainties, i.e., the unknown associations between measurements and landmarks. In this paper, the association variables are introduced as hidden variables in a variational Bayesian expectation maximization (VBEM) framework, resulting in a computationally efficient mapping algorithm that enables a joint estimation of the number of landmarks and their parameters.

  • Vehicle self-localization using off-the-shelf sensors and a detailed map

    • In the research on autonomous vehicles, self-localization is an important problem to solve. In this paper we present a localization algorithm based on a map and a set of off-the-shelf sensors, with the purpose of evaluating this low-cost solution with respect to localization performance. The used test vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System receiver, a gyroscope, wheel speed sensors, a camera providing information about lane markings, and a radar detecting landmarks along the road. Evaluation shows that the localization result is within or close to the requirements for autonomous driving when lane markers and good radar landmarks are present. However, it also indicates that the solution is not robust enough to handle situations when one of these information sources is absent.

    • The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the handbook as a multimodal resource from a reader perspective, with the material consisting of 32 Swedish handbooks on gardening from 1643 to 2005. The study draws theoretically on social semiotics and multimodal discourse analysis, as well as dialogism. There is an emphasis on the addressivity of the text, which is taken as a starting point for tracing signs of the intended text use in the design of the texts. The analysis is meaning-based, with the focus placed on functional features in the design of the texts.The first part of the study considers the reading goals afforded by the thematizations conveyed in titles, headings and text type patterns. The core function of these texts turns out to be action orientation, although the more recent books often include sections oriented towards other goals, like shaping individual aesthetic taste. The second part illustrates how the multimodal cohesive patterns in the books afford non-linear reading paths and make the texts searchable, which is enhanced by the presence of devices such as indices and tables of contents. Concentrating on six of the books, the third part of the study maps out the role of the reader that is naturalized by the design of the text, drawing on appraisal theory, and shows the strong, authoritative role taken by the authorial voice. The evaluative patterns naturalize a fact-seeking reading. However, the most recent book, from 1996, emphasizes emotions to a greater extent, naturalizing a parallel reading that invokes sensory experience.The conclusion drawn is that the core characteristics of the handbooks are action orientation, searchability and factuality. As different parallel functions in recent books are discerned, a tendency towards diversity and multifunctionality is described. The range of semiotic resources has also expanded, it is noted, and there is growing support for the view of a tendency towards the visualisation of written texts.
