  • Between protocol and reality : Swedish municipal comprehensive planning
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 26:1, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spatial planning using a landscape approach has been recognized as being essential for reconciling ecological, cultural and socioeconomic dimensions in sustainable development (SuD). Although embraced as a concept, there is a lack of planning tools capable of incorporating multi-level, multifunctional and multi-sectoral perspectives, especially in a rural context. The departure point in this paper is the legal requirements for municipal comprehensive planning (MCP) in Sweden and an e-mail survey about incentives, stakeholder involvement, policy integration and implementation in MCP in all 15 Swedish mountain municipalities. The purpose of this explorative study is to examine whether MCP could be a tool in planning for SuD. Results indicate a general lack of resources and a low status of MCP that affect, and even limit, stakeholder involvement, policy integration and implementation. However, legal requirements for MCP are targeted at SuD, and municipal personnel responsible for planning appreciate the potential of MCP. Therefore, there is potential to develop the MCP into an effective landscape planning tool. To accomplish this, the status of an active planning process has to be raised, the mandate of the local planning agency has to be secured, and residents and land users have to be involved throughout the planning process.

  • Stem Cell Growth and Migration on Nanofibrous Polymer Scaffolds and Micro-Fluidic Channels on Silicon-Chip
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2009 Electronic Components and Technology Conference. - 0569-5503. - 9781424444762 ; , s. 1080-1085
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stem cell growth and migration on nanofibrous scaffolds and micro-fluidic channels on Silicon-Chip were studied by using neural stem cells isolated from adult rats' brain. Electrospinning and lithographic technique were used for developing nanofibrous-polylactic acid (PLA) and polyurethane (PU) based-scaffolds and micro-fluidic channels on Si-Chips respectively. Immunocytochemical and morphological analysis showed better cell-matrix interaction with profound adhesion, proliferation and migration on the developed scaffolds. Cell culture assay with microfluidic channel revealed the ability of developed channel system in guiding neuronal stem cell growth towards specified directions. These studies extend the possibility of using developed nanofibrous scaffolds and micro-fluidic channel system for future electrical signal transmission based on living neural stem cells.

  • Does auditor rotation influence audit quality : the contested hypotheses tested on Swedish data
  • 2006
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Auditor independence is considered a key factor when ensuring high audit quality. Advocates for auditor rotation argue that rotation improves audit quality due to its positive influence on auditor independence. Opponents argue that rotation does not lead to improved audit quality, since the independence is gained at the expense of the auditors’ knowledge of business structure and routines. The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between rotation and audit quality. We use agency theory to derive the advocate view and stewardship theory to derive the opponents’ hypothesis. These hypotheses were tested on Swedish data. The results indicate only weak support for the hypothesis that rotation influence audit quality. The weakness is partly due to measurement problems. The proxies used in the literature appear to measure different facets of audit quality. Through an interpretation of a factor analysis, we suggest two main facets, perceived audit quality, which is significantly influenced by auditor rotation, and actual audit quality, which is not influenced by rotation.

  • Circulating granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and functional outcome after ischemic stroke: an observational study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Neurological Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0161-6412 .- 1743-1328. ; 43:12, s. 1013-1022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: While granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has shown beneficial effects in experimental ischemic stroke (IS), these effects have not been reproduced clinically. Small-to-medium-sized observational studies have reported varying associations for G-CSF with stroke severity and post-stroke functional outcome, prompting their investigation in a larger study. Methods: Endogenous serum G-CSF (S-GCSF) was measured in the acute phase and after 3 months in patients with IS (N = 435; 36% females; mean age, 57 years) from the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS). Stroke severity was scored according to the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) assessed functional outcomes at 3-month and 2-year post-stroke. Correlation and logistic regression analyses with confounder adjustments assessed the relationships. Results: The acute S-GCSF level was 23% higher than at 3-month post-stroke (p < 0.001). Acute G-CSF correlated weakly with stroke severity quintiles (r = 0.12, p = 0.013) and with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (r = 0.29, p < 0.001). The association between S-GCSF (as quintiles, q) and poor functional outcome at 3 months (mRS 3-6; S-GCSF-q5 vs. S-GCSF-q1, age- and sex-adjusted odds ratio: 4.27, 95% confidence interval: 1.82-9.99; p = 0.001) withstood adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors and stroke subtype, but not additional correction for stroke severity. Post-stroke changes in S-GSCF and absolute 3-month S-GCSF were not associated with 3-month or 2-year functional outcomes. Discussion: Early post-stroke S-GCSF is increased in severe IS and associated with 3-month poor functional outcomes. The change in S-GCSF and the 3-month S-GCSF appear to be less-important, and S-GCSF likely reflects inflammation in large infarctions.

  • Cognitive medicine - a new approach in health care science.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-244X. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenges of today's society call for more knowledge about how to maintain all aspects of cognitive health, such as speed/attention, memory/learning, visuospatial ability, language, executive capacity and social cognition during the life course.Medical advances have improved treatments of numerous diseases, but the cognitive implications have not been sufficiently addressed. Disability induced by cognitive dysfunction is also a major issue in groups of patients not suffering from Alzheimer's disease or related disorders. Recent studies indicate that several negative lifestyle factors can contribute to the development of cognitive impairment, but intervention and prevention strategies have not been implemented. Disability due to cognitive failure among the workforce has become a major challenge. Globally, the changing aging pyramid results in increased prevalence of cognitive disorders, and the diversity of cultures influences the expression, manifestation and consequences of cognitive dysfunction.Major tasks in the field of cognitive medicine are basic neuroscience research to uncover diverse disease mechanisms, determinations of the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction, health-economical evaluations, and intervention studies. Raising awareness for cognitive medicine as a clinical topic would also highlight the importance of specialized health care units for an integrative approach to the treatment of cognitive dysfunctions.

  • Circulating levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and post-stroke long-term functional outcome
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 141:5, s. 405-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) acts in angiogenesis and neuroprotection, although the beneficial effects on experimental ischemic stroke (IS) have not been replicated in clinical studies. We investigated serum VEGF (s-VEGF) in the acute stage (baseline) and 3 months post-stroke in relation to stroke severity and functional outcome. Methods The s-VEGF and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) concentrations were measured in patients enrolled in the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS) at the acute time-point (median 4 days, N = 492, 36% female; mean age, 57 years) and at 3 months post-stroke (N = 469). Baseline stroke severity was classified according to the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and functional outcomes (3 months and 2 years) were evaluated using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), dichotomized into good (mRS 0-2), and poor (mRS 3-6) outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were adjusted for covariates. Results The baseline s-VEGF did not correlate with stroke severity but correlated moderately with hs-CRP (r = .17, P < .001). The baseline s-VEGF was 39.8% higher in total anterior cerebral infarctions than in lacunar cerebral infarctions. In binary logistic regression analysis, associations with 3-month functional outcome were non-significant. However, an association between the 3-month s-VEGF and poor 2-year outcome withstood adjustments for age, sex, cardiovascular covariates, and stroke severity (per 10-fold increase in s-VEGF, odds ratio [OR], 2.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-5.82) or hs-CRP (OR 2.53, CI 1.15-5.55). Conclusions High 3-month s-VEGF is independently associated with poor 2-year functional outcome but not with 3-month outcome.
