  • Conceptualizing the Essence of Presence in Distance Education through Digital Dasein
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education 2014. - Chesapeake, VA : Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. ; , s. 746-754
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to achieve learning, presence is necessary. If we have good presence, no tests are necessary. In distance learning, the concept of presence is not obvious. Presence in distance and network contexts usually means being active on social media. However, in distance and network learning, something more is needed. It is the face-to-face interaction that needs to be “digitalized”. In order to investigate this, we have turned to Heidegger (1927) and the concept of Dasein. The need for an artifact mediating Dasein has been identified. The concept of Dasein is not easy, not even in philosophical terms. It means being somewhere else, and not on the place you are present. We have extended the The Community of Inquiry Model originating from Garrisson & Andersson (2003) by introducing the concept of digital Dasein.

  • Designing a Web-Based Education Platform for Swedish Civic Orientation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 37th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 37), Ringsted, Denmark, 10-13 August.. - Ringsted. - 9788773498767 ; , s. 1-13
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Newcomers in Sweden face a problem of learning the Swedish society with respect to laws, culture, democratic values, education system, labor market and aspects of taking the role as a parent. The municipality of Gothenburg and the county administrative board in Västra Götaland are appointed by the Swedish government to educate newcomers in civic orientation. This paper describes some problems in providing distance education for Swedish civic orientation in forms of advanced learning modules (ALM). Requirements for implications for design were gathered through several conducted workshops together with relevant stakeholders through a participatory design approach. We concluded that our design for implications can be processed for future research and used together with a system solution.

  • Designing for Adaptable Learning
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The research in this thesis emphasizes the endeavor of designing for adaptable learning. Designing for adaptable learning is understood as an overall response to designing for integration work. Designing for integration work is thus classified as a special case of designing for adaptable learning. Integration work in this research is understood as a professional practice that aims to improve and support the integration process of newly arrived immigrants (referred to as newcomers) in society. As professional practitioners of integration work, integration workers face daily challenges that are wicked by nature. In order to understand and problematize these challenges, the empirical work of this research was organized and performed within a case of digitalizing the civic orientation program in Sweden. The civic orientation program is a special case of integration work in Sweden, where integration workers organize and provide civic orientation to newcomers in Sweden. Different groups of newcomers are subsequently participating in a required 60 hours of civic orientation and are provided sessions through their native language. The integration workers are responsible for organizing and performing civic orientation through a dynamic process of dialogues, exercises, and more. Integration work as a practice, however, does not incorporate a standardized knowledge base, which provides integration workers a unified way of organizing and performing civic orientation. Instead, different counties and municipalities in Sweden organize and perform civic orientation in various ways. Furthermore, due to the extreme heterogeneity among newcomers as participants in civic orientation, the integration workers are forced to adapt. In turn, the integration workers themselves are heterogeneous due to their different roles, areas of responsibilities, and more essentially, worldviews. In order to understand and problematize the aspects of designing for integration work, an explorative approach was adopted through three consecutive cycles of Action Design Research. The cycles were performed from 2013 until completion of this thesis. The thesis was subsequently governed through three research questions: (1) How to design for integration work? (2)What makes designing for integration work significant? (3) Why do design for integration work? There search questions were addressed and answered through a body of produced knowledge that captures and provides the essential contributions of the thesis. The contributions of the thesis highlight different aspects of designing for integration work, as a special case of designing for adaptable learning. Thus, the contributions are presented and discussed with an explicit bearing toward designing for adaptable learning,as the general class of problems and solutions of this research. The contributions are consequently provided through: (1) an ensemble artifact that is termed a digital platform for civic orientation; (2) an Information Systems Design Theory for adaptable e-learning; (3) a design research methodology that incorporates work-integrated learning; (4) the meta-design of an open learning platform that supports the social integration of newcomers in society; and (5) a philosophical concept that problematizes and conceptualizes the essence of presence in e-learning. Ultimately, the research contributes to the research domains of information systems and work-integrated learning, by providing findings that problematize core aspects of designing for adaptable learning. Furthermore, the thesis extensively discusses the findings of this research by emphasizing a philosophical perspective toward core aspects of the research contributions. Finally, the thesis concludes with a set of limitations of the current research and a brief discussion about potential endeavours of future research.

  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of internet-mediated cognitive behavioural therapy for depression in the primary care setting : results based on a controlled trial
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 8:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective To perform a cost-effectiveness analysis of a randomised controlled trial of internet-mediated cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) compared with treatment as usual (Tall) for patients with mild to moderate depression in the Swedish primary care setting. In particular, the objective was to assess from a healthcare and societal perspective the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of ICBT versus TaU at 12 months follow-up. Design A cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a pragmatic effectiveness trial. Setting Sixteen primary care centres (PCCs) in south-west Sweden. Participants Ninety patients diagnosed with mild to moderate depression at the PCCs. Main outcome measure ICERs calculated as (Cost(ICBT)-Cost(TaU))/(Health outcome(ICBT)-Health outcome(TaU))=Delta Cost/Delta Health outcomes, the health outcomes being changes in the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) score and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Results The total cost per patient for ICBT was 4044 Swedish kronor (SEK) ((sic)426) (healthcare perspective) and SEK47679 ((sic)5028) (societal perspective). The total cost per patient for TaU was SEK4434 ((sic)468) and SEK50 343 ((sic)5308). In both groups, the largest cost was associated with productivity loss. The differences in cost per patient were not statistically significant. The mean reduction in BDI-ll score was 13.4 and 13.8 units in the ICBT and Tall groups, respectively. The mean QALYs per patient was 0.74 and 0.79 in the ICBT and TaU groups, respectively. The differences in BDI-11 score reduction and mean QALYs were not statistically significant. The uncertainty of the study estimates when assessed by bootstrapping indicated that no firm conclusion could be drawn as to whether ICBT treatment compared with Tall was the most cost-effective use of resources. Conclusions ICBT was regarded to be as cost-effective as TaU as costs, health outcomes and cost-effectiveness were similar for ICBT and TaU, both from a healthcare and societal perspective.

  • Characterization of cold lap defects in tandem arc MAG welding
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Rivista Italiana della Saldatura. - : Istituto Italiano della Saldatura. - 0035-6794. ; 65:5, s. 761-769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this investigation was to classify and characterize the small lack of fusion defects, called cold lap, located at the weld toe. Since the defects are very small (0.01-1.5 mm) and difficult to detect by NDT methods, a better understanding of the formation mechanism is required to be able to avoid their formation. The investigation consisted of two parts. Firstly, a study was made on the type and frequency of cold laps. Three types were identified, namely "spatter cold lap", and "overlap cold lap" and "spatter-overlap cold lap". No relation between type or frequency of cold laps and the welding parameters could be established. Secondly, the interface between spatter and the base material was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy, to better understand the cold lap formation mechanism. Manganese-silicate particles were found in the interface located in such a way that they may assist cold lap formation.

  • Improved CWM platform for modelling welding procedures and their effects on structural behaviour
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A welding procedure specification is the document describing how a weld joint should be constructed. Arc weld processes are characterized by transient thermal behavior, leading to rapid changes in material properties and dynamic interaction between weld and base material. The objective of the project is to explore how the use of an improved CWM-platform affects representative stress and strain fields in order to assess welding procedure qualification records. Forthis project, the accumulated thermal and mechanical influences from the first run to the final run are brought forward, in one and the same meshed geometrical model. Both the thermal and mechanical material model of the platform are designed to be used for modelling of the base- and weld material, promoting the simulation of the intricate combination of the thermal, elastic, and plastic strains on the plastic strain hardening and the formation of residual stress fields. The output of the simulation is mainly weld cooling times, residual stresses, and deformations. This analysis is taken further by examining how residual stresses influence crack driving force under elastic and plastic loading. In addition, the output from the simulations can be used to assess the realism of the proposed welding parameters. The main experimental welding procedure examined comes from the IIW RSDP Round Robin Phase II benchmark project, where the main aim was to benchmark residual stress simulations. This work was found to contain many applicable challenges of a CWM-analysis project.

  • Effect of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of a 5 wt.% Cr cold work tool steel
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work presents investigations related to phase transformations occurring inthe 5 wt.% Cr cold work tool steel Caldie during hardening and tempering treatments. The influence of austenitisation temperature, cooling rate, sub-zero cooling, isothermal treatment during cooling, tempering temperature and holding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The hardened microstructure of the investigated steel consisted of a mixture ofplate and lath martensite, minor amounts of bainite, blocky and thin retained austenite and M7C3 carbides. Increasing austenitisation temperature from 1020°Cto 1050°C was found useful as it provided higher hardness, good compressive strength and sufficient toughness. However, a further increase to 1075°C resulted in large prior austenite grains which produced coarse martensite containing somewhat increased carbon content. This was found to reduce the impacttoughness of the steel. Significant amounts of retained austenite were present after tempering for 2x2 h between 200°C and 500°C while tempering at 525°C or higher, reduced retained austenite content to below 2%. During holding at tempering temperature carbides precipitated in martensite and possibly in retained austenite. The retained austenite was thereby destabilised and transformed to martensite on cooling. This fresh martensite was tempered by following tempering treatments. It was concluded that tempering at 525°C for 2x2 h was suitable to achieve a good combination of hardness, compressive strength and impact toughness. Retained austenite was also found to transform during holding at 600°C for longer times. Initially, carbides formed in the austenite and after some time transformation of retained austenite to ferrite and carbides took place. Results were used to discuss alternative heat treatment procedures for the 5wt.% Cr cold work tool steel Caldie and some changes of current heat treatment recommendations were suggested.
