  • Pedatronics : Robotic toys as a source to evoke young girls’ technological interest
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: 32nd Annual Frontiers in Education. Leading a Revolution in Engineering and Computer Science Education. - San Diego : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0780374444 ; , s. F1C-19-F1C-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents some results within Pedatronics; a fusion between pedagogics and mechatronics. Our research interest is to study what emerges in the play with robotic toys. Field-experimental studies of 67 year old children’s purposeless play with robotic toys created a self-developmental sphere, as well as evoked young girl’s technological interest. Both girls and boys prolonged and intensified their interest according to the amount of gadgets involved. The results disclose a learning potential, indicating the importance to develop strategies at an early stage in order to encourage girls to choose technological and engineering educations. The study recommend engineers and toy designers, in cooperation with children, to move towards ’Integrated Play Systems’. Due to an ethological method, the results differ from other studies of children’s play with technological advanced artefacts. © 2002 IEEE

  • The riding school as a site for gender identity construction among Swedish teenage girls
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: World Leisure Journal. - Philadelphia, PA : Informa UK Limited. - 0441-9057 .- 1607-8055 .- 2333-4509. ; 53:1, s. 42-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on observations and interviews with six teenage girls (age 14–16) currently highly active in a Swedish riding school. Riding is one of the most popular sporting activities among girls in Sweden and riding schools receive financial support from the government to make riding available to everyone. The aim of this paper is to explore how teenage girls construct their gender identity at the stable through the handling of horses and related work in their leisure time. Theoretically, we employ Butler's (1999) theory of identity, based on social constructivism. The relationships with the horses, the hard work, the unexpected challenges, as well as the friendships among the girls, were found to be essential elements of the stable experience. At the stable, the girls learned to take action, handle risks and take the lead. This created an alternative way of enacting themselves as young females, resulting in an identity based on being independent, competent and powerful. As such, the riding school represents a developmental space where teenage girls can prepare themselves for their future, independent, lives.

  • Vuxenpedagogik -att iscensätta vuxnas lärande
  • 2007
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The impact of sport on young women’s attitude to physical activity in adult life
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Women in Sport & Physical Activity Journal. - Champaign, United States : National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. - 1063-6161 .- 1938-1581. ; 9:1, s. 65-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sport participation or regular physical activity is often seen as a factor, which leads to better health and well being. Sport also has a social function, as most of the activities are performed together with other people. However, while club sports in Sweden have a stimulating effect on young men, there is a risk that they do not provide enough scope for young women. In particular, early specialization and a high level of seriousness do not suit all young sportswomen. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical understanding of the ways in which sport has influenced young women’s lifestyles in terms of their attitudes to physical activity in adult life. The data were collected using strategic interviews and analyzed using the grounded theory method. Based upon the results, young women’s physically active lifestyles varied depending on how they valued their sport in combination with how they handled their sport. Sport was regarded as having a positive effect on health and well-being. This led to the young women studied intending to pursue a physically active lifestyle also in adult life. They enjoyed participating in sport, but not particularly sport with a high level of seriousness or a high level of vigor, which is what characterizes most club sports today.
