  • Beyond the neutron drip line: The unbound oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26 are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from F-26 and F-27 at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into O-24 plus one or two neutrons, the O-25 ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the O-26 ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in O-26 at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

  • Accelerated radioactive beams from REX-ISOLDE
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - 0168-583X. ; 204, s. 20-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2001 the linear accelerator of the Radioactive beam EXperiment (REX-ISOLDE) delivered for the first time accelerated radioactive ion beams, at a beam energy of 2 MeV/u. REX-ISOLDE uses the method of charge-state breeding, in order to enhance the charge state of the ions before injection into the LINAC. Radioactive singly-charged ions from the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge bred to an A/q

  • Nuclear Structure of C-12 from Break-up Studies in Complete Kinematics
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. - 9780735407022 ; 1165, s. 27-30 461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A complete kinematics study of the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) and B-11(He-3,d alpha alpha alpha) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of C-12 resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. Four-particle coincidence detection gives us complete information on the direction and energy of the individual alpha particles from the decay of C-12, allowing us to extract new information on the structure of C-12 which we shall present in this contribution. We have observed gamma de-excitation of the T=1 15.11 MeV resonance using charged particle detectors, and have constructed Dalitz plots of the individual resonances in C-12 using the complete kinematics information of the alpha particles which come from their break-up.

  • Mapping of the C-12* states via the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) reaction
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal: Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6401 .- 1951-6355. ; 150:1, s. 207-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied C-12 in full kinematics via the B-10(He-3, p alpha alpha alpha) reaction at an energy of 2.45 MeV. In our data we have identified states in C-12 from the ground state up to about 18 MeV, with spins ranging from 0 to 4. Due to the very good resolution, we are able to determine properties of these C-12 resonances, such as their energy, width, and spin. In this contribution preliminary results from the ongoing analysis are presented. Main focus on the precise determination of the breakup spectra for all resonances.

  • R-matrix analysis of the beta decays of 12N and 12B
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 81:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The β decays of 12N and 12B have been studied at KVI and JYFL to resolve the composition of the broad and interfering 0+ and 2+ strengths in the triple-α continuum. For the first time a complete treatment of 3α decay is presented including all major breakup channels. A multilevel, many-channel R-matrix formalism has been developed for the complete description of the breakup in combination with the recently published separate analysis of angular correlations. We find that, in addition to the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV, more than one 0+ and 2+ state is needed to reproduce the spectra. Broad 03+ and 22+ states are found between 10.5 and 12 MeV in this work. The presence of β strength up to the 12N Q-value window suggests the presence of additional 0+ and 2+ components in the 12C structure at energies above 12.7 MeV.

  • Improved Limit on Direct α Decay of the Hoyle State
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 108:20, s. 202501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current evaluation of the triple-α reaction rate assumes that the α decay of the 7.65 MeV, 0+ state in 12C, commonly known as the Hoyle state, proceeds sequentially via the ground state of 8Be. This assumption is challenged by the recent identification of two direct α-decay branches with a combined branching ratio of 17(5)%. If correct, this would imply a corresponding reduction in the triple-α reaction rate with important astrophysical consequences. We have used the 11B(3He,d) reaction to populate the Hoyle state and measured the decay to three α particles in complete kinematics. We find no evidence for direct α-decay branches, and hence our data do not support a revision of the triple-α reaction rate. We obtain an upper limit of 5×10-3 on the direct α decay of the Hoyle state at 95% C.L., which is 1 order of magnitude better than a previous upper limit.

  • Observation of gamma-delayed 3 alpha breakup of the 15.11 and 12.71 MeV states in C-12
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 680:1, s. 44-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reactions B-10(He-3, p alpha alpha alpha) at 4.9 MeV and B-11(He-3, d alpha alpha alpha) at 8.5 MeV have been used to investigate the gamma decay of states in C-12. By measuring the four-body final state in complete kinematics we are able to detect gamma transitions indirectly. We find gamma transitions from the 15.11 MeV state in C-12 to the 12.71, 11.83, 10.3 and 7.65 MeV states followed by their breakup into three alpha particles. The relative gamma-ray branching ratios obtained are (1.2 +/- 0.3), (0.32 +/- 0.12), (1.4 +/- 0.2) and (4.4 +/- 0.8)%, respectively, with the remaining (92.7 +/- 1.0)% of the gamma decays going to the bound states. We obtain Gamma(alpha)/Gamma = (2.8 +/- 1.2)% for the isospinforbidden alpha decay of the 15.11 MeV state. From the 12.71 MeV state we find gamma transitions to the 10.3 and 7.65 MeV states. The relative gamma-ray branching ratios are (0.9(-0.5)(+0.6)) and (2.6(-1.2)(+1.6))%, respectively, with the remaining (96.6(-1.3)(+1.7))% of the gamma decays going to the bound states. Finally. we discuss the relation between the beta decay of N-12 and B-12 to states in C-12 and the gamma decay of the 15.11 MeV analog in C-12 to the same states. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. • Evidence of a new state in Be-11 observed in the Li-11 beta-decay
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 677:5, s. 255-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coincidences between charged particles emitted in the beta-decay of Li-11 were observed using highly segmented detectors. The breakup channels involving three particles were Studied in full kinematics allowing for the reconstruction of the excitation energy of the Be-11 states participating in the decay. In particular, the contribution of a previously unobserved state at 16.3 MeV in Be-11 has been identified selecting the alpha + He-7 -> alpha + He-6 + n channel. The angular correlations between the alpha particle and the center of mass of the He-6 + n system favors spin and parity assignment of 3/2(-) for this state as well as for the previously known state at 18 MeV. • Coulomb breakup of 17Ne from the viewpoint of nuclear astrophysics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By the Coulomb breakup of 17Ne, the time-reversed reaction 15O(2p,γ)17Ne has been studied. This reaction might play an important role in the rp process, as a break-out reaction of the hot CNO cycle. The secondary 17Ne ion beam with an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon has been dissociated in a Pb target. The reaction products have been detected with the LAND-R3B experimental setup at GSI. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb dissociation cross section sCoul has been determined, which then will be converted into a photo-absorption cross section sphot o, and a two-proton radiative capture cross section σcap. Additionally, information about the structure of the 17Ne, a potential two-proton halo nucleus, will be received. The analysis is in progress.
