  • Identifying governance strategies that effectively support ecosystem services, resource sustainability, and biodiversity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 108:13, s. 5308-5312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conservation scientists, national governments, and international conservation groups seek to devise, and implement, governance strategies that mitigate human impact on the environment. However, few studies to date have systematically investigated the performance of different systems of governance in achieving successful conservation outcomes. Here, we use a newly-developed analytic framework to conduct analyses of a suite of case studies, linking different governance strategies to standardized scores for delivering ecosystem services, achieving sustainable use of natural resources, and conserving biodiversity, at both local and international levels. Our results: (i) confirm the benefits of adaptive management; and (ii) reveal strong associations for the role of leadership. Our work provides a critical step toward implementing empirically justified governance strategies that are capable of improving the management of human-altered environments, with benefits for both biodiversity and people.

  • Investigation on AUTOSAR-Compliant solutions for many-core architectures
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 18th Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design, DSD 2015. - 9781467380355 ; , s. 95-103
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As of today, AUTOSAR is the de facto standard in the automotive industry, providing a common software architecture and development process for automotive applications. While this standard is originally written for singlecore operated Electronic Control Units (ECU), new guidelines and recommendations have been added recently to provide support for multicore architectures. This update came as a response to the steady increase of the number and complexity of the software functions embedded in modern vehicles, which call for the computing power of multicore execution environments. In this paper, we enumerate and analyze the design options and the challenges of porting AUTOSAR-based automotive applications onto multicore platforms. In particular, we investigate those options when considering the emerging many-core architectures that provide a more 'scalable' environment than the traditional multicore systems. Such platforms are suitable to enable massive parallel execution, and their design is more suitable for partitioning and isolating the software components.

  • Application management plug-ins through dynamically pluggable probes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - International Conference on Software Engineering. - Waikiki, Honolulu, HI : ACM. - 9781450305990 ; , s. 32-35
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is widely recognized that applications need to be administered remotely. In general, application management and monitoring is supported by textual management consoles while graphical user interfaces specialized for their tasks are preferred by average users. Defining what must be monitored and what are the admin actions one wants to perform on an application cannot be defined during the application development due to the fact that these needs evolve after the application deployment as we cannot completely predict the execution environment such as available devices. This paper presents an architecture and the corresponding infrastructure that allow administrators to define what they want to monitor and manage and automate the discovery and deployment of corresponding probes and related management console graphical plug-ins. This work has been validated on two different application.

  • Challenges and opportunities when introducing cloud computing into embedded systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceeding - 2015 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics, INDIN 2015. - 9781479966493 ; , s. 454-459
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of cloud computing in different application areas is growing fast. More and more functions are being moved into the cloud in order to take advantage of cloud computing strengths such as scalability, resources on demand, and usage based cost models. However, most types of embedded systems are still in an early phase of cloud adoption, with a few exceptions found in e.g., data storage and user interfaces. In this paper we present a number of challenges and opportunities when introducing cloud computing into embedded systems. In particular, we look at embedded systems with requirements on timing predictability, i.e., real-time systems. In the paper we conclude that it is possible to move a complete soft real-time system into the cloud. Moreover we see an upcoming development in cloud computing to potentially allow for hard real-time systems to be moved to the cloud.

  • Design considerations introducing analytics as a 'dual use' in complex industrial embedded systems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728129891
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Embedded systems are today often self-sufficient with limited and predefined communication. However, this traditional view of embedded systems is changing through advancements in technologies such as, communication, cloud technologies, and advanced analytics including machine learning. These advancements have increased the benefits of building Systems of Systems (SoS) that can provide a functionality with unique capabilities that none of the included subsystems can accomplish separately. By this gain of functionality the embedded system is evolving towards a 'dual use' purpose11In this paper we define dual usage as a control system having two purposes. In other contexts such as politics, diplomacy and export control, the term 'dual-use' refers to technology that can be used for both peaceful and military aims, e.g., nuclear power technology., The use is dual in the sense that the system still needs to handle its original task, e.g., control and protect of an asset, and it must provide information for creating the SoS. Larger installations, e.g., industry plants, power systems and generation, have in most cases a long expected life-cycle, some up to 30-40 years without significant updates, compared to analytical functions that evolve and change much faster, i.e., requiring new types of data sets from the subsystems, not know at its first deployment. This difference in development cycles calls for new solutions supporting updates related to new requirements inherent in analytical functions. In this paper, within the context of 'dual usage' of systems and subsystems, we analyze the impact on an embedded system, new or legacy, when it is required to provide analytic data with high quality. We compare a reference system, implementing all functions in one CPU core, to three other alternative solutions: a) a multi-core system where we are using a separate core for analytics, b) using a separate analytics CPU and c) analytics functionality located in a separate subsystem. Our conclusion is that the choice of analytics information collection method should to be based on intended usage, along with resulting complexity and cost of updates compared to hardware cost.

  • Development of collaborative green lean production systems
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with development of lean and green production systems from an action research point of view. The studies focus on Swedish-based automotive and vehicle industries and their aims to integrate sustainable thinking and environmental care into their operations management.Starting from operations management in manufacturing and corporate sustainable development, the research is built on how to integrate these two views into one production system. The systematic structure of a multiple-target improvement process with methodologies and tools designed to achieve the sustainability vision has been studied. Since lean as well as green production is based on the entire value chain, the research has gone beyond legal company limits and included the collaborative efforts between suppliers and customers in the value chain. The thesis includes six papers and describes approaches on how to implement integration, how to structure and integrate improvement management systems, how to set up an integrated monitoring and control system for the business and how to organise and redesign green lean tools and methodologies to support collaboration towards common targets. The results can be used for exploration and hypothesis formulation for further studies and development of integrated production systems and collaboration systems. The thesis helps answering how to integrate and implement company-specific green lean production systems.

  • From customer understanding to design for processability : Reconceptualizing the formal product innovation work process for non-assembled products
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Technovation. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0166-4972 .- 1879-2383. ; 125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores company design of a formal work process for non-assembled products, using a survey mode of inquiry with a follow-up questionnaire in an interactive dialogue with selected case-companies. The preliminary findings suggest that in the development or reconfiguration of company product innovation work processes in the process industries, it is advisable to design a work process that is adapted to inherent and contextual process-industrial conditions. It is further indicated that such a product innovation work process requires greater product and process integration from ideation to product launch and increased focus on the industrialization phase. The proposed novel five-phase structural model presented in a Stage-Gate format, can be deployed as a guiding template in company development or reconfiguration of an enhanced product innovation work process for the development of non-assembled products.

  • Applicability of using internal GPGPUs in industrial control systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 19th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA 2014. - 9781479948468 ; , s. Article number 7005096-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial control systems are continuously increasing in functionality, connectivity, and levels of integration, and as a consequence they require more computational power. At the same time, these systems have specific requirements related to cost, reliability, timeliness, and thermal power dissipation, which put restrictions on the hardware and software used. Today the high-end embedded CPUs not only provide multiple cores, but also integrated graphics processors (GPU) at close to no additional cost. The use of GPUs for general processing have several potential values in industrial control systems; 1) the added computational power and the high parallelism could pave way for new functionality and 2) the integrated GPU could potentially replace other hardware and thereby reduce the overall cost. In this paper we investigate the applicability of using integrated GPUs in industrial control systems. We do this by evaluating the performance of GPUs with respect to computational problem types and sizes typically found in industrial control systems. In the end we conclude that GPUs are no obvious match for industrial control systems and that several hurdles remain before a wide adoption can be motivated.
