  • Molecular Engineering of Perylene Diimide Polymers with a Robust Built-in Electric Field for Enhanced Solar-Driven Water Splitting
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The built-in electric field of the polymer semiconductors could be regulated by the dipole moment of its building blocks, thereby promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and achieving efficient solar-driven water splitting. Herein, three perylene diimide (PDI) polymers, namely oPDI, mPDI and pPDI, are synthesized with different phenylenediamine linkers. Notably, the energy level structure, light-harvesting efficiency, and photogenerated carrier separation and migration of polymers are regulated by the orientation of PDI unit. Among them, oPDI enables a large dipole moment and robust built-in electric field, resulting in enhanced solar-driven water splitting performance. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, oPDI exhibits the highest photocurrent of 115.1 mu A cm-2 for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution, which is 11.5 times that of mPDI, 26.8 times that of pPDI and 104.6 times that of its counterparts PDI monomer at the same conditions. This work provides a strategy for designing polymers by regulating the orientation of structural units to construct efficient solar energy conversion systems. Three perylene diimide (PDI) polymers were designed and synthesized such that the molecular orientation of the PDI units was regulated to create and modulate their built-in electric fields. Due to the large dipole moment and interfacial electric field, oPDI enables an extraordinary photocurrent density of 115.1 mu A & sdot; cm-2, which is 11.5 and 26.8 times that of mPDI and pPDI, respectively.image

  • Cartography of opportunistic pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes in a tertiary hospital environment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 26, s. 941-951
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although disinfection is key to infection control, the colonization patterns and resistomes of hospital-environment microbes remain underexplored. We report the first extensive genomic characterization of microbiomes, pathogens and antibiotic resistance cassettes in a tertiary-care hospital, from repeated sampling (up to 1.5 years apart) of 179 sites associated with 45 beds. Deep shotgun metagenomics unveiled distinct ecological niches of microbes and antibiotic resistance genes characterized by biofilm-forming and human-microbiome-influenced environments with corresponding patterns of spatiotemporal divergence. Quasi-metagenomics with nanopore sequencing provided thousands of high-contiguity genomes, phage and plasmid sequences (>60% novel), enabling characterization of resistome and mobilome diversity and dynamic architectures in hospital environments. Phylogenetics identified multidrug-resistant strains as being widely distributed and stably colonizing across sites. Comparisons with clinical isolates indicated that such microbes can persist in hospitals for extended periods (>8 years), to opportunistically infect patients. These findings highlight the importance of characterizing antibiotic resistance reservoirs in hospitals and establish the feasibility of systematic surveys to target resources for preventing infections. Spatiotemporal characterization of microbial diversity and antibiotic resistance in a tertiary-care hospital reveals broad distribution and persistence of antibiotic-resistant organisms that could cause opportunistic infections in a healthcare setting.

  • Long-term androgen excess induces insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in PCOS-like rats.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of steroid biochemistry and molecular biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1220 .- 0960-0760. ; 208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at higher risk for metabolic disorders compared to healthy women, and about 51 % of women with PCOS suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Investigation into the pathological mechanism behind this association will provide insights for the prevention and treatment of this complication.Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a nonaromatic androgen, was used to mimic the pathological conditions of hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, Oil Red O staining, immunofluorescent staining, Western blots, and qRT-PCR were used to verify the hepatic steatosis and inflammation, and the latter two methods were also used for energy and mitochondrion-related assays. ELISA was used to measure the level of reactive oxygen species.Twelve weeks of DHT exposure led to obesity and insulin resistance as well as hepatic steatosis, lipid deposition, and different degrees of inflammation. The expression of molecules involved in respiratory chain and aerobic respiration processes, such as electron transfer complex II, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit A, was inhibited. In addition, molecules associated with apoptosis and autophagy were also abnormally expressed, such as increased Bak mRNA, an increased activated caspase-3 to caspase-3 ratio, and increased Atg12 protein expression. All of these changes are associated with the mitochondria and lead to lipid deposition and inflammation in the liver.Long-term androgen excess contributes to insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis by affecting mitochondrial function and causing an imbalance in apoptosis and autophagy, thus suggesting the pathogenesis of NAFLD in women with PCOS.

  • Tuning the composition of heavy metal-free quaternary quantum dots for improved photoelectrochemical performance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 9:9, s. 5825-5832
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks towards the development of cost-effective and high-efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Unfortunately, the frequent use of QDs possessing heavy metals (e.g. Cd and Pb) in state-of-the-art QD-based PEC technologies is a major obstacle regarding their future commercial perspective. In this work, we synthesized heavy metal-free quaternary CuZnInS3 (CZIS) with variable Cu : Zn ratios and fabricated corresponding QDs-PEC devices via a facile chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. It is revealed that the tuned CZIS (1Zn) QDs (i.e. Cu : Zn ratio of 1 : 1) can result in optimized optical properties including enhanced quantum yield, suppressed nonradiative recombination and extended excitonic lifetime. Accordingly, as-fabricated CZIS (1Zn) QD-based photoanodes demonstrated increased charge transfer rate and decreased electron transport resistance for improved PEC performance. The results indicate that tuning the composition of heavy metal-free multinary QDs is one of the promising pathways to achieve eco-friendly and high-performance PEC systems for solar hydrogen production.

  • Near-infrared, eco-friendly ZnAgInSe quantum dots-sensitized graphene oxide-TiO2 hybrid photoanode for high performance photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building-blocks for the manufacture of cost-effective photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells towards efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Nevertheless, the state-of-the-art QDs-based PEC systems still suffer from the frequent utilization of highly toxic elements in QDs (Cd and Pb), hindering their future practical applications and potential commercialization. Here, we report a PEC device fabricated using eco-friendly, near-infrared (NIR) ZnAgInSe (ZAISe) QDs and hybrid TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) film. Based on the synergistic effect of QD’s broad light absorption and excellent charge extraction/transport properties of TiO2/GO film, as-assembled QDs-photoanode exhibits an outstanding saturated photocurrent density of ∼6.7 mA/cm2 with good stability under standard 1 sun illumination. The introduction of functional GO can lead to the reduced charge transfer resistance, suppressed charge recombination, and enhanced electron transport within the QDs-TiO2 photoanodes. The results offer a facile and effective method to enhance the performance of environmentally friendly QDs-based PEC devices and shed light on the development of low-cost, “green” and high-efficiency solar-to-hydrogen conversion system.

  • Endogenous Ovarian Angiogenesis in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome-Like Rats Induced by Low-Frequency Electro-Acupuncture: The CLARITY Three-Dimensional Approach. : Ovarian angiogenesis in PCOS-like rats
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International journal of molecular sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1422-0067. ; 19:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sought to determine the role of ovarian vascularity and neo-angiogenesis in the development of mature follicles in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to identify any changes induced by low-frequency electro-acupuncture (EA). Twenty-eight 21-day-old female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups-Control, Obesity, PCOS-like, and PCOS-like-EA (n = 7/group). Rats in the Obesity group were fed a high-fat diet throughout the experiment. Rats in the PCOS-like and PCOS-like-EA groups were implanted with a sustained-release tube containing 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) beneath the skin of the neck. Rats in the PCOS-like-EA group received low-frequency EA treatment starting at 70 days for 30 min five times a week for four weeks. At the end of the experiment, all rats were euthanized and perfused with hydrogel. The ovaries were collected for clarification and imaging, and ovarian vascularity and neo-angiogenesis were analyzed. Compared with Control and Obesity rats, the ovaries in DHT-induced PCOS-like rats were smaller in size and had fewer mature follicles and corpora lutea. EA increased angiogenesis in the antral follicles of PCOS-like rats, which in turn promoted follicle maturation, ovulation, and CL formation. Therefore, endogenous ovarian angiogenesis plays a very important role in follicular maturation and might be one of the peripheral and direct mechanisms of EA on PCOS.

  • Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural dines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale.

  • How to choose the suitable animal model of polycystic ovary syndrome?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Traditional Medicine and Modern Medicine. - 2575-9000 .- 2575-9019. ; 1:2, s. 95-113
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a gynecological metabolic and endocrine disorder with uncertain etiology. To understand the etiology of PCOS or the evaluation of various therapeutic agents, different animal models have been introduced. Considering this fact that is difficult to develop an animal model that mimics all aspects of this syndrome, but, similarity of biological, anatomical, and/or biochemical features of animal model to the human PCOS phenotypes can increase its application. This review paper evaluates the recently researched animal models and introduced the best models for different research purposes in PCOS studies. During January 2013 to January 2017, 162 studies were identified which applied various kinds of animal models of PCOS including rodent, primate, ruminant and fish. Between these models, prenatal and pre-pubertal androgen rat models and then prenatal androgen mouse model have been studied in detail than others. The comparison of main features of these models with women PCOS demonstrates higher similarity of these three models to human conditions. Thereafter, letrozole models can be recommended for the investigation of various aspects of PCOS. Interestingly, similarity of PCOS features of post-pubertal insulin and human chorionic gonadotropin rat models with women PCOS were considerable which can make it as a good choice for future investigations.

  • Boosting the performance of eco-friendly quantum dots-based photoelectrochemical cells via effective surface passivation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nano Energy. - : Elsevier. - 2211-2855 .- 2211-3282. ; 76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells fabricated using environment-friendly colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising optoelectronic devices for future practical solar-to-hydrogen conversion. However, the majority of current eco-friendly QDs-based PEC cells exhibited low efficiency mainly due to the charge trapping at QDs’ surface states and interfacial recombination processes in devices. Here, eco-friendly AgInS2 (AIS) QDs-based PEC cells passivated with variable ZnS layers were fabricated and the effects of ZnS surface passivation on corresponding device performance were investigated. It is demonstrated that optimizing the thickness of the ZnS passivation layers can largely suppress the charge trapping/recombination and enhance the electron injection efficiency in the PEC devices, leading to a saturated photocurrent density of ∼5.7 mA/cm2 under standard AM 1.5 G solar illumination. Increasing the thickness of ZnS passivation layers can further inhibit the photocorrosion and give rise to higher device stability. These results indicate that ZnS surface passivation is a facile and efficient technique to boost the performance of eco-friendly QDs-based PEC cells.
