  • New class of oligonuclear platinum-thallium compounds with a direct metal-metal bond. 5. Structure determination of heterodimetallic cyano complexes in aqueous solution by EXAFS and vibrational spectroscopy
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 40:16, s. 3889-3899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structures of three closely related heterodimetallic cyano complexes, [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(n)](n-) (n = 1-3), formed in reactions between [Pt-II(CN)(4)](2-) and Tl-III cyano complexes, have been studied in aqueous solution. Multinuclear NMR data ((TI)-T-205, Pt-195, and C-13) were used for identification and quantitative analysis. X-ray absorption spectra were recorded at the Pt and TlLIII edges. The EXAFS data show, after developing a model describing the extensive multiple scattering within the linearly coordinated cyano ligands, short Pt-Tl bond distances in the [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(n)](n-) complexes: 2.60(1), 2.62(1), and 2.64(1) Angstrom for n = 1-3, respectively. Thus, the Pt-Tl bond distance increases with increasing number of cyano ligands on the thallium atom. In all three complexes the thallium atom and five cyano ligands, with a mean Pt-C distance of 2.00-2.01 Angstrom, octahedrally coordinate the platinum atom. In the hydrated [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(H2O)(4)](-) species the thallium atom coordinates one cyano ligand, probably as a linear Pt-TI-CN entity with a Tl-C bond distance of 2.13(1) Angstrom, and possibly four loosely bound water molecules with a mean Tl-O bond distance of about 2.51 Angstrom. In the [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(2)](2-) species, the thallium atom probably coordinates the cyano ligands trigonally with two TI-C bond distances at 2.20(2) Angstrom, and in [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(3)]Tl3- coordinates tetrahedrally with three TI-C distances at 2.22(2) Angstrom. EXAFS data were reevaluated for previously studied mononuclear thallium(III)-cyano complexes in aqueous solution, [Tl(CN)(2)(H2O)(4)](+), [Tl(CN)(3)(H2O)], and [Tl(CN)(4)](-), and also for the solid K[TI(CN)(4)] compound. A comparison shows that the TI-C bond distances are longer in the dinuclear complexes [(NC)(5)Pt-TI(CN)(n)](n-) (it = 1-3) for the same coordination number. Relative oxidation states of the metal atoms were estimated from their Pt-195 and (TI)-T-205 chemical shifts, confirming that the I(NC)5Pt-TI(CN),]n- complexes can be considered as metastable intermediates in a two-electron-transfer redox reaction from platinum(II) to thallium(III). Vibrational spectra were recorded and force constants from normal-coordinate analyses are used for discussing the delocalized bonding in these species.

  • Forward genetic analysis of the circadian clock separates the multiple functions of ZEITLUPE.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Plant Physiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0032-0889 .- 1532-2548. ; 140:3, s. 933-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The circadian system of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) includes feedback loops of gene regulation that generate 24-h oscillations. Components of these loops remain to be identified; none of the known components is completely understood, including ZEITLUPE (ZTL), a gene implicated in regulated protein degradation. ztl mutations affect both circadian and developmental responses to red light, possibly through ZTL interaction with PHYTOCHROME B (PHYB). We conducted a large-scale genetic screen that identified additional clock-affecting loci. Other mutants recovered include 11 new ztl alleles encompassing mutations in each of the ZTL protein domains. Each mutation lengthened the circadian period, even in dark-grown seedlings entrained to temperature cycles. A mutation of the LIGHT, OXYGEN, VOLTAGE (LOV)/Period-ARNT-Sim (PAS) domain was unique in retaining wild-type responses to red light both for the circadian period and for control of hypocotyl elongation. This uncoupling of ztl phenotypes indicates that interactions of ZTL protein with multiple factors must be disrupted to generate the full ztl mutant phenotype. Protein interaction assays showed that the ztl mutant phenotypes were not fully explained by impaired interactions with previously described partner proteins Arabidopsis S-phase kinase-related protein 1, TIMING OF CAB EXPRESSION 1, and PHYB. Interaction with PHYB was unaffected by mutation of any ZTL domain. Mutation of the kelch repeat domain affected protein binding at both the LOV/PAS and the F-box domains, indicating that interaction among ZTL domains leads to the strong phenotypes of kelch mutations. Forward genetics continues to provide insight regarding both known and newly discovered components of the circadian system, although current approaches have saturated mutations at some loci.

  • Endoscopic classification of the papilla of Vater. Results of an inter- and intraobserver agreement study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: United European Gastroenterology Journal. - : Wiley. - 2050-6406 .- 2050-6414. ; 5:4, s. 504-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Many endoscopists acknowledge that the appearance of the papilla of Vater seems to affect biliary cannulation. To assess the association between the macroscopic appearance of the papilla and biliary cannulation and other related clinical issues, a system is needed to define the appearance of the papilla. Objective: The purpose of this study was to validate an endoscopic classification of the papilla of Vater by assessing the interobserver and intraobserver agreements among endoscopist with varying experience. Methods: An endoscopic classification, based on pictures captured from 140 different papillae, containing four types of papillae was proposed. The four types are (a) Type 1: regular papilla, no distinctive features, ‘classic appearance’; (b) Type 2: small papilla, often flat, with a diameter ≤ 3 mm (approximately 9 Fr); (c) Type 3: protruding or pendulous papilla, a papilla that is standing out, protruding or bulging into the duodenal lumen or sometimes hanging down, pendulous with the orifice oriented caudally; and (d) Type 4: creased or ridged papilla, where the ductal mucosa seems to extend distally, rather out of the papillary orifice, either on a ridge or in a crease. To assess the level of interobserver agreement, a web-based survey was sent out to 18 endoscopists, containing 50 sets of still images of the papilla, distributed between the four different types. Three months later a follow-up survey, with images from the first survey was sent to the same endoscopists. Results: Interobserver agreement was substantial (κ = 0.62, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.58–0.65) and were similar for both experts and non-experts. The intraobserver agreement assessed with the second survey was also substantial (κ = 0.66, 95% CI 0.59–0.72). Conclusion: The proposed endoscopic classification of the papilla of Vater seems to be easy to use, irrespective of the level of experience of the endoscopist. It carries a substantial inter- and intraobserver agreement and now the clinical relevance of the four different papilla types awaits to be determined.

  • The Comet Interceptor Mission
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Nature. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 220:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA’s F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600 ms − 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes – B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 – that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. We present the mission’s science background leading to these objectives, as well as an overview of the scientific instruments, mission design, and schedule.

  • Metal-metal bond or isolated metal centers? Interaction of Hg(CN)(2) with square planar transition metal cyanides
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 44:26, s. 9643-9651
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three adducts have been prepared from Hg(CN)(2) and square planar M-II(CN)(4)(2-) transition metal cyanides (M = Pt, Pd, or Ni, with d(8) electron shell) as solids. The structure of the compounds K2PtHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O (1), Na2PdHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O (2), and K2NiHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O (3) have been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy in the solid state. The structure of K2PtHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O consists of one-dimensional wires. No CN- bridges occur between the heterometallic centers. The wires are strictly linear, and the Pt(II) and Hg(II) centers alternate. The distance d(Hg-Pt) is relatively short, 3.460 angstrom. Time-resolved luminescence spectra indicate that Hg(CN)2 units incorporated into the structure act as electron traps and shorten the lifetime of both the short-lived and longer-lived exited states in 1 compared to K-2[Pt(CN)(4)]center dot 2H(2)O. The structures of Na2PdHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O and K2NiHg(CN)(6)center dot 2H(2)O can be considered as double salts; the lack of heterometallophilic interaction between the remote Hg(II) and Pd(II) atoms, d(Hg-Pd) = 4.92 angstrom, and Hg(II) and Ni(II) atoms, d(Hg-Ni) = 4.61 angstrom, is apparent. Electron binding energy values of the metallic centers measured by XPS show that there is no electron transfer between the metal ions in the three adducts. In solution, experimental findings clearly indicate the lack of metal-metal bond formation in all studied Hg-II-CN--M-II(CN)(4)(2-) systems (M = Pt, Pd, or Ni).

  • Deactivation resistant Pd-ZrO2 supported on multiwall carbon nanotubes catalyst for direct formic acid fuel cells
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 40:46, s. 16724-16733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the main problems of palladium based catalysts for a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is their low stability during a long-term operation. In these studies, the Pd–ZrO2 catalyst supported on the multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was prepared and thermo-chemically treated. These catalysts were tested in a fuel cell for formic acid electrooxidation, and their chemical composition and structure were characterised by the XPS, STEM, HR-TEM and XRD techniques. It was found that the Pd–ZrO2/MWCNTs catalyst after synthesis causes oscillations of the cell voltage during operation resulting in significantly higher deactivation resistance than that of Pd/MWCNTs. This may be attributed to the “self-cleaning” mechanism of poisoned Pd catalyst by carbon monoxide through the electrochemical oxidation of COads (adsorbed) to CO2 (gas).

  • 17O NMR study of aqueous peroxoisopolymolybdate equilibria at lower peroxide/Mo ratios
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; , s. 146-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aqueous peroxomolybdates have been studied using 17O NMR together with equilibrium measurements and calculations, over a wide range of conditions. Ten peroxo species are identified, mostly in more than one state of protonation. Some are already known in the solid state, or from equilibrium analysis, but structural information is also obtained for MoO3(HO2)– and the new or previously tentative species Mo2O5(O2)22–, HpMo7O23(O2)2p–6 and HpMo7O23(O2)p–6(p= 0–2). Sites of protonation are identified, as are 17O resonances from both bidentate and monodentate peroxide. Several oxygen exchange processes are also seen, including a probable dimer–tetramer exchange.

  • Glyphosate complexation to aluminium(III). An equilibrium and structural study in solution using potentiometry, multinuclear NMR, ATR-FTIR, ESI-MS and DFT calculations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry. - : Elsevier. - 0162-0134 .- 1873-3344. ; 103:11, s. 1426-1438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The stoichiometries and stability constants of a series of Al(3+)-N-phosponomethyl glycine (PMG/H(3)L) complexes have been determined in acidic aqueous solution using a combination of precise potentiometric titration data, quantitative (27)Al and (31)P NMR spectra, ATR-FTIR spectrum and ESI-MS measurements (0.6M NaCl, 25 degrees C). Besides the mononuclear AlH(2)L(2+), Al(H(2)L)(HL), Al(HL)(2)(-) and Al(HL)L(2-), dimeric Al(2)(HL)L(+) and trinuclear Al(3)H(5)L(4)(2+) complexes have been postulated. (1)H and (31)P NMR data show that different isomers co-exist in solution and the isomerization reactions are slow on the (31)P NMR time scale. The geometries of monomeric and dimeric complexes likely double hydroxo bridged and double phosphonate bridged isomers have been optimized using DFT ab initio calculations starting from rational structural proposals. Energy calculations using the PCM solvation method also support the co-existence of isomers in solutions.

  • Nitrogen-doped anatase nanofibers decorated with noble metal nanoparticles for photocatalytic production of hydrogen
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: ACS NANO. - : American Chemical Society. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 5:6, s. 5025-5030
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the synthesis of N-doped TiO2 nanofibers and high photocatalytic efficiency in generating hydrogen from ethanol-water mixtures under UV-A and UV-B irradiation. Titanate nanofibers synthesized by hydrothermal method are annealed in air and/or ammonia to achieve N-doped anatase fibers. Depending on the synthesis route, either interstitial N atoms or new N-Ti bonds appear in the lattice resulting in slight lattice expansion as shown by XPS and HR-TEM analyses, respectively. These nanofibers were then used as support for Pd and Pt nanoparticles deposited with wet impregnation followed by calcination and reduction. In the hydrogen generation tests the N-doped samples were clearly outperforming their un-doped counterparts showing remarkable efficiency not only under UV-B but also with UV-A illumination. Applying 100 mg catalyst (N-doped TiO2 nanofiber decorated with Pt nanoparticles) in 1 L water-ethanol mixture the H2 evolution rates were as high as 700 μmol/h (UV-A) and 2250 μmol/h (UV-B) corresponding to photo energy percentages of ~3.6% and ~12.3%, respectively.
