  • Turbulent transport coefficients in spherical wedge dynamo simulations of solar-like stars
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We investigate dynamo action in global compressible solar-like convective dynamos in the framework of mean-field theory. Methods. We simulate a solar-type star in a wedge-shaped spherical shell, where the interplay between convection and rotation self-consistently drives a large-scale dynamo. To analyze the dynamo mechanism we apply the test-field method for azimuthally (φ) averaged fields to determine the 27 turbulent transport coefficients of the electromotive force, of which six are related to the α tensor. This method has previously been used either in simulations in Cartesian coordinates or in the geodynamo context and is applied here for the first time to fully compressible simulations of solar-like dynamos. Results. We find that the φφ-component of the α tensor does not follow the profile expected from that of kinetic helicity. The turbulent pumping velocities significantly alter the effective mean flows acting on the magnetic field and therefore challenge the flux transport dynamo concept. All coefficients are significantly affected by dynamically important magnetic fields. Quenching as well as enhancement are being observed. This leads to a modulation of the coefficients with the activity cycle. The temporal variations are found to be comparable to the time-averaged values and seem to be responsible for a nonlinear feedback on the magnetic field generation. Furthermore, we quantify the validity of the Parker-Yoshimura rule for the equatorward propagation of the mean magnetic field in the present case.

  • A community-derived classification for extant lycophytes and ferns
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systematics and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 1674-4918 .- 1759-6831. ; 54:6, s. 563-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogeny has long informed pteridophyte classification. As our ability to infer evolutionary trees has improved, classifications aimed at recognizing natural groups have become increasingly predictive and stable. Here, we provide a modern, comprehensive classification for lycophytes and ferns, down to the genus level, utilizing a community-based approach. We use monophyly as the primary criterion for the recognition of taxa, but also aim to preserve existing taxa and circumscriptions that are both widely accepted and consistent with our understanding of pteridophyte phylogeny. In total, this classification treats an estimated 11 916 species in 337 genera, 51 families, 14 orders, and two classes. This classification is not intended as the final word on lycophyte and fern taxonomy, but rather a summary statement of current hypotheses, derived from the best available data and shaped by those most familiar with the plants in question. We hope that it will serve as a resource for those wanting references to the recent literature on pteridophyte phylogeny and classification, a framework for guiding future investigations, and a stimulus to further discourse.

  • Defect studies in MBE grown GaSb1-x Bi x layers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP Publishing LLC. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1583, s. 174-177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Positron annihilation spectroscopy in Doppler broadening mode is used to study epitaxial layers of GaSb 1-x Bi x on undoped GaSb. The samples were grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy at different temperatures and with different Bi/Sb beam equivalent pressure ratios resulting in Bi concentrations of 0-0.7 %. The results show a relationship between the growth parameters and Doppler broadening parameters. Incorporating Bi into GaSb decreases the vacancy concentration in the epitaxial layers compared to the sample with no Bi in the epitaxial layer.

  • Investigating Global Convective Dynamos with Mean-field Models : Full Spectrum of Turbulent Effects Required
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 919:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of turbulent effects for dynamos in the Sun and stars continues to be debated. Mean-field (MF) theory provides a broadly used framework to connect these effects to fundamental magnetohydrodynamics. While inaccessible observationally, turbulent effects can be directly studied using global convective dynamo (GCD) simulations. We measure the turbulent effects in terms of turbulent transport coefficients, based on the MF framework, from an exemplary GCD simulation using the test-field method. These coefficients are then used as an input into an MF model. We find a good agreement between the MF and GCD solutions, which validates our theoretical approach. This agreement requires all turbulent effects to be included, even those which have been regarded as unimportant so far. Our results suggest that simple dynamo models, as are commonly used in the solar and stellar community, relying on very few, precisely fine-tuned turbulent effects, may not be representative of the full dynamics of dynamos in global convective simulations and astronomical objects.

  • - Could coastal plants in western Amazonia be relicts of past marine incursions?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biogeography. - : Wiley. - 0305-0270 .- 1365-2699. ; 46:8, s. 1749-1759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • - The rainforests of Amazonia comprise some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. Despite this high biodiversity, little is known about how landscape changes that took place in deep history have affected the assembly of its species, and whether the impact of such changes on biodiversity can still be observed. Here, we present a hypothesis to explain our observation that plants typical of Neotropical coastal habitats also occur in western Amazonia, in some cases thousands of kilometres away from the coast. Evidence on their current distribution, dispersal biology and divergence times estimated from molecular phylogenies suggest that these plants may be the legacy of the large marine-influenced embayment that dominated the area for millions of years in the Neogene. We hypothesize that coastal plants dispersed along the shores of this embayment and persisted as inland relicts after the marine incursion(s) retreated, probably with the aid of changes in soil conditions caused by the deposition of marine sediments. This dispersal corridor may also have facilitated the colonization of coastal environments by Amazonian lineages. These scenarios could imply an unexpected coastal source that has contributed to Amazonia's high floristic diversity and led to disjunct distributions across the Neotropics. We highlight the need for future studies and additional evidence to validate and shed further light on this potentially important pattern. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

  • The effect of a material growth technique on ion-implanted Mn diffusion in GaAs
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Semiconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0268-1242 .- 1361-6641. ; 24:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diffusion of ion-implanted Mn in semi-insulating (SI) and liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC)-grown GaAs has been determined employing the modified radiotracer technique. The effect of the growth technique and conditions on Mn diffusion in low temperature molecular beam epitaxy (LT-MBE)-grown GaAs has also been studied. Two distinct diffusion components appear in ion-implanted Mn diffusion in GaAs: slow and fast. As the diffusivity for the SI material is slightly higher than that for the LT-grown material, it is observed that the diffusivity of the fast component retards with increasing initial concentrations of Ga sublattice defects. At the same time the Mn concentration in the tail part of the diffusion profile is higher in the LT-grown material. Ga vacancy-assisted clustering of Mn is proposed as a likely reason for the observed effects.

  • Observation of vacancies in Ga1-xMnxAs with positron annihilation spectroscopy
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. Series A: General Physics, Physics of Condensed Matter, Optics and Quantum Electronics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Applied Physics. - 0587-4246. ; 103:6, s. 601-606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Positron annihilation spectroscopy can be used to determine the role of vacancy defects in semiconductors, by identification and quantification of the vacancies and their chemical surroundings. We have studied 0.5-0.8 mum thick low temperature MBE GaMnAs layers with Mn content 0.5-5% and different As-2 partial pressures at growth. The Doppler broadening results show that the Ga vacancy concentration in the layers decreases with increasing Mn content and decreasing As-2 partial pressure.
