  • In this volume of “Lecture Notes in Intelligent Transportation and Infrastructure”, we are pleased to present the proceedings of the International Conference “Vision Zero for Sustainable Road Safety in Baltic Sea Region”, which took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 5 to 6 December 2018. This event is organized by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) and Lithuanian-Swedish Academy. The mission of the conference is to promote a more comprehensive approach supporting new ideas, technologies, theories, its development and applications, as well as work in progress and activities on all theoretical and practical issues arising in safety of road traffic, transportation and sustainable mobility. An outstanding scientific, society policy and practice-oriented conference was organized to facilitate the spread and exchange of knowledge, skills and attitudes between experts, researchers and companies, aiming to facilitate the implementation of Vision Zero in the Baltic Sea Region. Road safety is a major social issue. In Europe, more than 26,000 people die in traffic every year. For every traffic-related death on Europe’s roads, there is an estimation of four permanently disabling injuries, eight serious injuries and fifty minor injuries. In addition to human suffering, this is causing the society extensive costs for health care, rehabilitation and sick leaves. The aim of the conference is to highlight road safety in the Baltic Sea Region by cooperation between Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. Shared experience of road safety from Sweden and Norway for the last 20 years had among the lowest traffic-related death rate in the Europe. At the conference, the current and future plans of road safety and its impact on the society were presented by representatives from ministries and authorities responsible for traffic and road safety in Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. As the mobility of the future needs to be sustainable, safe and efficient, the road infrastructure safety management, automated transport and digital systems are also analyzed.
