  • We Can Only Do It Together: Addressing Global Sustainability Challenges Through a Collaborative Paradigm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Universities, Sustainability and Society: Supporting the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030633981 - 9783030633998 - 9783030634018
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urgent structural change is required in higher education to allow collaboration both within and acrossuniversities so that achieving a rapid sustainability transition can become the overarching and mainpurpose of education, research and work in society. A review of the literature reveals that fragmentation, caused by traditional hierarchical faculty and disciplinary organisation, is a major obstacle to such goals.Additionally, universities today operate under a competitive paradigm that prevents the transfer andapplication of available knowledge, thereby blocking the development of new knowledge and coherentfuture-oriented approaches. Fragmentation and competition prevent universities from pooling resources, understanding major challenges holistically and using systemic approaches to address them. Politicalagendas, funding priorities and existing mechanisms of dissemination and evaluation of academic activitycontribute to inertia. Rather than applying fragmented sustainability goals within rigid silo structures, action for sustainability needs to be coordinated among academic actors both horizontally and diagonally. This requires spaces for strategic thinking, concertation, open discussion and knowledge sharing. Theinsights achieved in strong sustainability research environments need to direct efforts towards achieving arapid sustainability transition, and priority must be given to structures, networks and research that alreadyenable concertation and collaboration

  • Climate and Peatlands
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Changing Climates, Earth Systems and Society. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 9789048187157 - 9789048187164 ; , s. 85-121
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Peatlands are an important natural archive for past climatic changes, primarily due to their sensitivity to changes in the water balance and the dating possibilities of peat sediments. In addition, peatlands are an important sink as well as potential source of greenhouse gases. The first part of this chapter discusses a range of well-established and novel proxies studied in peat cores (peat humification, macrofossils, testate amoebae, stomatal records from subfossil leaves, organic biomarkers and stable isotope ratios, aeolian sediment influx and geochemistry) that are used for climatic and environmental reconstructions, as well as recent developments in the dating of these sediments. The second part focuses on the role that peatland ecosystems may play as a source or sink of greenhouse gases. Emphasis is placed on the past and future development of peatlands in the discontinuous permafrost areas of northern Scandinavia, and the role of regenerating mined peatlands in north-western Europe as a carbon sink or source.

  • The Origin and Early History of NOW as It Happened
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Evolution of Cenozoic Land Mammal Faunas and Ecosystems: 25 years of the NOW database of fossil mammals.. - : Springer. ; , s. 7-32
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The NOW database of fossil mammals came to be through a confluence of several initiatives spanning multiple decades. The first public version of NOW database was released in 1996 and the first Advisory Board was established the year after. Originally, NOW stood for Neogene of the Old World but with the gradual expansion of the database the acronym was eventually reassigned to stand for New and Old Worlds. The structure of what would become NOW was originally cloned from the ETE database of the Smithsonian Institution and the first NOW version accessible over the internet was a node of the ETE database. The first standalone, online version of NOW was launched in 2005 and the first formal steering group was established in 2009. During its existence, NOW has been funded, directly or indirectly, by several organizations but fundamentally it has always been an unfunded community effort, dependent on voluntary work by the participants.

  • Multimodality imaging beyond CLEM: Showcases of combined in-vivo preclinical imaging and ex-vivo microscopy to detect murine mural vascular lesions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Methods in Cell Biology. - : Elsevier. - 0091-679X. ; , s. 389-415
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In imaging, penetration depth comes at the expense of lateral resolution, which restricts the scope of 3D in-vivo imaging of small animals at micrometer resolution. Bioimaging will need to expand beyond correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) approaches to combine insights about in-vivo dynamics in a physiologically relevant 3D environment with ex-vivo information at micrometer resolution (or beyond) within the spatial, structural and biochemical contexts. Our report demonstrates the immense potential for biomedical discovery and diagnosis made available by bridging preclinical in-vivo imaging with ex-vivo biological microscopy to zoom in from the whole organism to individual structures and by adding localized spectroscopic information to structural and functional information. We showcase the use of two novel imaging pipelines to zoom into mural lesions (occlusions/hyperplasia and micro-calcifications) in murine vasculature in a truly correlative manner, that is using exactly the same animal for all integrated imaging modalities. This correlated multimodality imaging (CMI) approach includes well-established technologies such as Positron Emission Tomography (microPET), Autoradiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (microMRI) and Computed Tomography (microCT), and imaging approaches that are more novel in the biomedical setting, such as X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (microXRF) and High Resolution Episcopic Microscopy (HREM). Although the current pipelines are focused on mural lesions, they would also be beneficial in preclinical and clinical investigations of vascular diseases in general.

  • Terrestrial Cr-spinels in the Maiolica limestone : Where are they from?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 250 Million Years of Earth History in Central Italy: Celebrating 25 Years of the Geological Observatory of Coldigioco. - : Geological Society of America. - 0072-1077. ; 542, s. 121-131
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In total, 33 and 65 chrome-spinel (Cr-spinel) grains in the >63 and 32–63 µm size fractions, respectively, were recovered from 12 beds in two stratigraphically separated groups along the 240-m-thick Monte Acuto section of the Maiolica limestone in central Italy, spanning from the Berriasian to the early Hauterivian. The chemistry of these detrital spinels suggests they may represent windblown ophiolitic detritus, showing the evolution of an ophiolite evolving from a mid-ocean-ridge basalt setting (Bosso section) to a suprasubduction-zone setting, including a backarc and an arc setting (Monte Acuto section). The source of the Maiolica detrital minerals may have been the obducting ophiolites of the Albanides and/or the Hellenides, which show a similar evolution. In this case, it is particularly important to note how the Cr-spinel detritus in the Maiolica limestone records this evolution over a relatively short period of time, lasting ~10 m.y.
