  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science China Information Sciences. - : Science Press. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 64:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

  • High performance transition metal oxide composite cathode for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 203:1, s. 65-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with metal oxide composite cathode on the ceria–carbonate composite electrolyte have shown promising performance. However, the role of individual elements or compound is seldom investigated. We report here the effect of the ZnO on the physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of lithiated NiO cathode. The materials and single cells are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, DC polarization electrical conductivity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and fuel cell performance. The ZnO modified lithiated NiO composite materials exhibit smaller particle size and lower electrical conductivity than lithiated NiO. However, improved electro-catalytic oxygen reduction activity and power output are achieved after the ZnO modification. A maximum power density of 808 mW cm−2 and the corresponding interfacial polarization resistance of 0.22 Ω cm2 are obtained at 550 °C using ZnO modified cathode and 300 μm thick composite electrolyte. The single cell keeps reasonable stability over 300 min at 500 °C. Thus, ZnO modified lithiated NiO is a promising cathode candidate for low temperature SOFCs.

  • Boosting enzymatic degradation of cellulose using a fungal expansin : Structural insight into the pretreatment mechanism
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0960-8524 .- 1873-2976. ; 358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recalcitrance of cellulosic biomass greatly hinders its enzymatic degradation. Expansins induce cell wall loosening and promote efficient cellulose utilization; however, the molecular mechanism underlying their action is not well understood. In this study, TlEXLX1, a fungal expansin from Talaromyces leycettanus JCM12802, was characterized in terms of phylogeny, synergy, structure, and mechanism of action. TlEXLX1 displayed varying degrees of synergism with commercial cellulase in the pretreatment of corn straw and filter paper. TlEXLX1 binds to cellulose via domain 2, mediated by CH–π interactions with residues Tyr291, Trp292, and Tyr327. Residues Asp237, Glu238, and Asp248 in domain 1 form hydrogen bonds with glucose units and break the inherent hydrogen bonding within the cellulose matrix. This study identified the expansin amino acid residues crucial for cellulose binding, and elucidated the structure and function of expansins in cell wall networks; this has potential applications in biomass utilization.

  • Exploring the cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic activities of manganese peroxidase for lignocellulose deconstruction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts. - 2731-3654. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundA cost-effective pretreatment and saccharification process is a necessary prerequisite for utilizing lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) in biofuel and biomaterials production. Utilizing a multifunctional enzyme with both pretreatment and saccharification functions in a single step for simultaneous biological pretreatment and saccharification process (SPS) will be a green method of low cost and high efficiency. Manganese peroxidase (MnP, EC 1.11.1.13), a well-known lignin-degrading peroxidase, is generally preferred for the biological pretreatment of biomass. However, exploring the role and performance of MnP in LCB conversion will promote the application of MnP for lignocellulose-based biorefineries.ResultsIn this study, we explored the ability of an MnP from Moniliophthora roreri, MrMnP, in LCB degradation. With Mn2+ and H2O2, MrMnP decomposed 5.0 g/L carboxymethyl cellulose to 0.14 mM of reducing sugar with a conversion yield of 5.0 mg/g, including 40 μM cellobiose, 70 μM cellotriose, 20 μM cellotetraose, and 10 μM cellohexaose, and degraded 1.0 g/L mannohexaose to 0.33 μM mannose, 4.08 μM mannotriose, and 4.35 μM mannopentaose. Meanwhile, MrMnP decomposed 5.0 g/L lichenan to 0.85 mM of reducing sugar with a conversion yield of 30.6 mg/g, including 10 μM cellotriose, 20 μM cellotetraose, and 80 μM cellohexose independently of Mn2+ and H2O2. Moreover, the versatility of MrMnP in LCB deconstruction was further verified by decomposing locust bean gum and wheat bran into reducing sugars with a conversion yield of 54.4 mg/g and 29.5 mg/g, respectively, including oligosaccharides such as di- and tri-saccharides. The catalytic mechanism underlying MrMnP degraded lignocellulose was proposed as that with H2O2, MrMnP oxidizes Mn2+ to Mn3+. Subsequently, it forms a complex with malonate, facilitating the degradation of CMC and mannohexaose into reducing sugars. Without H2O2, MrMnP directly oxidizes malonate to hydroperoxyl acetic acid radical to form compound I, which then attacks the glucosidic bond of lichenan.ConclusionThis study identified a new function of MrMnP in the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose, suggesting that MrMnP exhibits its versatility in the pretreatment and saccharification of LCB. The results will lead to an in-depth understanding of biocatalytic saccharification and contribute to forming new enzymatic systems for using lignocellulose resources to produce sustainable and economically viable products and the long-term development of biorefinery, thereby increasing the productivity of LCB as a green resource.

  • Roadmap on energy harvesting materials
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7639. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

  • Fast ionic conduction in semiconductor CeO2-delta electrolyte fuel cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: NPG ASIA MATERIALS. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1884-4049 .- 1884-4057. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Producing electrolytes with high ionic conductivity has been a critical challenge in the progressive development of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) for practical applications. The conventional methodology uses the ion doping method to develop electrolyte materials, e.g., samarium-doped ceria (SDC) and yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), but challenges remain. In the present work, we introduce a logical design of non-stoichiometric CeO2-delta based on non-doped ceria with a focus on the surface properties of the particles. The CeO2-delta reached an ionic conductivity of 0.1 S/cm and was used as the electrolyte in a fuel cell, resulting in a remarkable power output of 660 mW/cm(2) at 550 degrees C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) clearly clarified that a surface buried layer on the order of a few nanometers was composed of Ce3+ on ceria particles to form a CeO2-delta@CeO2 core-shell heterostructure. The oxygen deficient layer on the surface provided ionic transport pathways. Simultaneously, band energy alignment is proposed to address the short circuiting issue. This work provides a simple and feasible methodology beyond common structural (bulk) doping to produce sufficient ionic conductivity. This work also demonstrates a new approach to progress from material fundamentals to an advanced low-temperature SOFC technology.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 42:27, s. 17552-17558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lowering the operating temperature of the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is one of the world R&D tendencies. Exploring novel electrolytes possessing high ionic conductivity at low temperature becomes extremely important with the increasing demands of the energy conversion technologies. In this work, perovskite La0.1SrxCa0.9-xMnO3-δ (LSCM) materials were synthesized and composited with the ionic conductor Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC). The LSCM-SDC composite was sandwiched between two nickel foams coated with semiconductorNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2- δ (NCAL) to form the fuel cell device. The strontium content in theLSCM and the ratios of LSCM to SDC in the LSCM-SDC composite have significant effects on the electrical properties and fuel cell performances. The best performance has been achieved from LSCM-SDC composite with a weight ratio of 2:3. The fuel cells showed OCV over 1.0 V and excellent maximum output power density of 800 mW/cm2 at 550 ºC. Device processes and ionic transport processes were also discussed.

  • Potential environmental benefits of integrating flue gas quench in biomass/waste-fueled CHP plants
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy Science & Engineering. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2050-0505. ; 9:2, s. 189-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to stricter regulations, large biomass/waste incineration power plants are expected to reduce (i) pollutant emissions through water (such as organic compounds dissolved in the discharge water), (ii) the withdrawal of external freshwater, and (iii) the disturbance to the natural water by increasing the water recycle and internal reuse. To address such challenges, flue gas quench (FGQ) is playing a vital role that links flue gas (FG) cleaning and wastewater treatment. In this study, a detailed analysis based on the material and energy balance is performed regarding the pollutant distribution in the flue gas and the wastewater within a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The real data from the reference CHP plant were used; and results show that the utilization of FGQ can result in less wastewater discharge (about 73 tonnes/d) together with less pollutant concentration to the municipal wastewater treatment plant, as compared to the system with only flue gas condenser but without FGQ. The integration of FGQ also results in less burden on the external freshwater use by increasing the amount of clean water for internal use (about 57 tonnes per day). In addition, the integration of FGQ can offer a potential annual energy saving of about 13.1 MWh in the municipal wastewater treatment plant due to the less wastewater coming from the CHP plant.

  • Photovoltaic properties of LixCo3-xO4/TiO2 heterojunction solar cells with high open-circuit voltage
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0248 .- 1879-3398. ; 157, s. 126-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All-oxide solar cells are presently attracting extensive research interest due to their excellent stability, low-cost and non-toxicity. However, the band gap of metal oxides is lack of effective optimization and results in poor photovoltaic performance, thus hindering their practical applications. In this work, Co3O4 was investigated for application as a photo-absorber in all-oxide solar cells, and its band gap was optimized by introducing Li dopant into the spinel structure. LixCo3-xO4 nanoparticles, prepared via the hydrothermal method, were homogenously coated onto TiO2 mesoporous films, which were then used to fabricate planar heterojunction TiO2/LixCo3-xO4 solar cells (SCs). The effects of Li-doping on the heterojunction solar cell performance were further investigated. The findings revealed that the incorporation of Li ions into Co3O4 led to a significant enhancement in short-circuit current density (J(sc)). Remarkably, a high open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.70 V was also achieved. Besides, reasons for the enhanced cell performance are the narrower band gap, reduced photogenerated carrier recombination and the more favorable energy band structure as compared with SCs assembled from pure Co3O4.

  • Progress in Electrolyte-Free Fuel Cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: FRONTIERS IN ENERGY RESEARCH. - : FRONTIERS MEDIA SA. - 2296-598X. ; 4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) represents a clean electrochemical energy conversion technology with characteristics of high conversion efficiency and low emissions. It is one of the most important new energy technologies in the future. However, the manufacture of SOFCs based on the structure of anode/electrolyte/cathode is complicated and time-consuming. Thus, the cost for the entire fabrication and technology is too high to be affordable, and challenges still hinder commercialization. Recently, a novel type of electrolyte-free fuel cell (EFFC) with single component was invented, which could be the potential candidate for the next generation of advanced fuel cells. This paper briefly introduces the EFFC, working principle, performance, and advantages with updated research progress. A number of key R&D issues about EFFCs have been addressed, and future opportunities and challenges are discussed.
