  • Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: A pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4.4 million participants
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 387:10027, s. 1513-1530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are aff ecting the number of adults with diabetes. Methods: We pooled data from population-based studies that had collected data on diabetes through measurement of its biomarkers. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in diabetes prevalence-defined as fasting plasma glucose of 7.0 mmol/L or higher, or history of diagnosis with diabetes, or use of insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs-in 200 countries and territories in 21 regions, by sex and from 1980 to 2014. We also calculated the posterior probability of meeting the global diabetes target if post-2000 trends continue.Findings: We used data from 751 studies including 4372000 adults from 146 of the 200 countries we make estimates for. Global age-standardised diabetes prevalence increased from 4.3% (95% credible interval 2.4-17.0) in 1980 to 9.0% (7.2-11.1) in 2014 in men, and from 5.0% (2.9-7.9) to 7.9% (6.4-9.7) in women. The number of adults with diabetes in the world increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 (28.5% due to the rise in prevalence, 39.7% due to population growth and ageing, and 31.8% due to interaction of these two factors). Age-standardised adult diabetes prevalence in 2014 was lowest in northwestern Europe, and highest in Polynesia and Micronesia, at nearly 25%, followed by Melanesia and the Middle East and north Africa. Between 1980 and 2014 there was little change in age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adult women in continental western Europe, although crude prevalence rose because of ageing of the population. By contrast, age-standardised adult prevalence rose by 15 percentage points in men and women in Polynesia and Micronesia. In 2014, American Samoa had the highest national prevalence of diabetes (>30% in both sexes), with age-standardised adult prevalence also higher than 25% in some other islands in Polynesia and Micronesia. If post-2000 trends continue, the probability of meeting the global target of halting the rise in the prevalence of diabetes by 2025 at the 2010 level worldwide is lower than 1% for men and is 1% for women. Only nine countries for men and 29 countries for women, mostly in western Europe, have a 50% or higher probability of meeting the global target.Interpretation: Since 1980, age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adults has increased, or at best remained unchanged, in every country. Together with population growth and ageing, this rise has led to a near quadrupling of the number of adults with diabetes worldwide. The burden of diabetes, both in terms of prevalence and number of adults aff ected, has increased faster in low-income and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Embedding Ensemble Learning into Construction Optimisation : A Computational Reduction Approach
  • 2020
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation-based optimisation (SO), which combines simulation and optimisation technologies, is a popular approach for construction planning optimisation. However, in the framework of SO, the simulation is continuously invoked during the optimisation trajectory, which increases the computing loads to levels that are unrealistic to support the real-time construction decision. This study proposes ensemble learning embedded simulation optimisation (ESO) as an alternative approach for construction optimisation. The ensemble learning (EL) algorithm modifies the SO framework through establishing a connection between the simulation and optimisation technologies. This approach reduces the computing loads associated with the conventional SO framework by accurately learning from simulations and providing efficient fitness evaluations for optimisation. A large-scale project application shows that the proposed approach was able to reduce the computing loads of SO by approximately 90% yet still provide comparable optimisation quality. The proposed method is an alternative approach to SO that can be run on standard computing platforms and supports nearly real-time optimisation decisions.

  • Ingår i: Engineering Construction and Architectural Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0969-9988 .- 1365-232X. ; 30:1, s. 259-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Simulation-based optimisation (SO) is a popular optimisation approach for building and civil engineering construction planning. However, in the framework of SO, the simulation is continuously invoked during the optimisation trajectory, which increases the computational loads to levels unrealistic for timely construction decisions. Modification on the optimisation settings such as reducing searching ability is a popular method to address this challenge, but the quality measurement of the obtained optimal decisions, also termed as optimisation quality, is also reduced by this setting. Therefore, this study aims to develop an optimisation approach for construction planning that reduces the high computational loads of SO and provides reliable optimisation quality simultaneously.Design/methodology/approach - This study proposes the optimisation approach by modifying the SO framework through establishing an embedded connection between simulation and optimisation technologies. This approach reduces the computational loads and ensures the optimisation quality associated with the conventional SO approach by accurately learning the knowledge from construction simulations using embedded ensemble learning algorithms, which automatically provides efficient and reliable fitness evaluations for optimisation iterations.Findings - A large-scale project application shows that the proposed approach was able to reduce computational loads of SO by approximately 90%. Meanwhile, the proposed approach outperformed SO in terms of optimisation quality when the optimisation has limited searching ability.Originality/value - The core contribution of this research is to provide an innovative method that improves efficiency and ensures effectiveness, simultaneously, of the well-known SO approach in construction applications. The proposed method is an alternative approach to SO that can run on standard computing platforms and support nearly real-time construction on-site decision-making.

  • Automatic mapping of configuration options in software using static analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of King Saud University - Computer and Information Sciences. - : Elsevier. - 1319-1578 .- 2213-1248. ; 34:10, Part B, s. 10044-10055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Configuration errors are some of the main reasons for software failures. Some configuration options may even negatively impact the software’s security, so that if a user sets the options inappropriately, there may be a huge security risk for the software. Recent studies have proposed mapping option read points to configuration options as the first step in alleviating the occurrence of configuration errors. Sadly, most available techniques use humans, and the rest require additional input, like an operation manual. Unfortunately, not all software is standardized and friendly. We propose a technique based on program and static analysis that can automatically map all the configuration options of a program just by reading the source code. Our evaluation shows that this technique achieves 88.6%, 97.7%, 94.6%, 94.8%, and 92.6% success rates with the Hadoop modules Common, Hadoop distributed file system, MapReduce, and YARN, and also PX4, when extracting configuration options. We found 53 configuration options in PX4 that were not documented and submitted these to the developers. Compared with published work, our technique is more effective in mapping options, and it may lay the foundation for subsequent research on software configuration security.

  • International Asteroid Warning Network Timing Campaign: 2019 XS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Planetary Science Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 2632-3338. ; 3:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of the International Asteroid Warning Network's observational exercises, we conducted a campaign to observe near-Earth asteroid 2019 XS around its close approach to Earth on 2021 November 9. The goal of the campaign was to characterize errors in the observation times reported to the Minor Planet Center, which become an increasingly important consideration as astrometric accuracy improves and more fast-moving asteroids are observed. As part of the exercise, a total of 957 astrometric observations of 2019 XS during the encounter were reported and subsequently were analyzed to obtain the corresponding residuals. While the timing errors are typically smaller than 1 s, the reported times appear to be negatively biased, i.e., they are generally earlier than they should be. We also compared the observer-provided position uncertainty with the cross-track residuals, which are independent of timing errors. A large fraction of the estimated uncertainties appear to be optimistic, especially when <0 2. We compiled individual reports for each observer to help identify and remove the root cause of any possible timing error and improve the uncertainty quantification process. We suggest possible sources of timing errors and describe a simple procedure to derive reliable, conservative position uncertainties.

  • A survey on data center networking for cloud computing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier BV. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 91, s. 528-547
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data Center Networks (DCNs) are an essential infrastructure that impact the success of cloud computing. A scalable and efficient data center is crucial in both the construction and operation of stable cloud services. In recent years, the growing importance of data center networking has drawn much attention to related issues including connective simplification and service stability. However, existing DCNs lack the necessary agility for multi-tenant demands in the cloud, creating poor responsiveness and limited scalability. In this paper, we present an overview of data center networks for cloud computing and evaluate construction prototypes based on these issues. We provide, specifically, detailed descriptions of several important aspects: the physical architecture, virtualized infrastructure, and DCN routing. Each section of this work discusses and evaluates resolution approaches, and presents the use cases for cloud computing service. In our attempt to build insight relevant to future research, we also present some open research issues. Based on experience gained in both research and industrial trials, the future of data center networking must include careful consideration of the interactions between the important aspects mentioned above

  • Coarse-grained simulations of ionic liquid materials: from monomeric ionic liquids to ionic liquid crystals and polymeric ionic liquids
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 23:35, s. 19435-19456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ionic liquid (IL) materials are promising electrolytes with striking physicochemical properties for energy and environmental applications. Heterogeneous structures and transport quantities of monomeric and polymeric ILs are intrinsically intercorrelated and span multiple spatiotemporal scales, which is more feasible for coarse-grained (CG) simulations than atomistic modelling. Herein we constructed a novel CG model for ethyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ILs with varied cation alkyl chains ranging from C2 to C20, and the interaction parameters were validated against representative static and dynamic properties that were obtained from atomistic reference simulations and experimental characterizations at relevant thermodynamic states. This CG model was extended to study thermotropic phase behaviors of monomeric ILs and to explore ion association structures and ion transport quantities in polymeric ILs with different architectures. A systematic analysis of structural and dynamical quantities identifies an evolution of liquid morphology from homogeneous to nanosegregated structures and then a smectic mesomorphism via a gradual lengthening of cation alkyl chains, and thereafter a distinct structural transition characterized by a monotonic decrease in orientational and translational order parameters in a sequential heating cascade. Backbone and pendant polymeric ILs exhibit evident anion association structures with cation monomers and polymer chains, and striking intra- and interchain coordinations between cation monomers owing to an intrinsic polymer architecture effect. Such a peculiar ion pairing association leads to a progressive increase in anion intrachain hopping probabilities, and a concomitant decrease in anion interchain hopping events with a gradual lengthening of polymeric ILs. The anion diffusivities in polymeric ILs are intrinsically correlated with ion pairing association lifetimes and ion structural relaxation times via a universal power law correlation D ∼ τ−1, irrespective of polymer architectures.

  • Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Chemical Reviews. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0009-2665 .- 1520-6890. ; 120:13, s. 5798-5877
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation–anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.
