  • The Impact of the Group Environment on the Molecular Gas and Star Formation Activity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 17, s. 136-139
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At least half of the local galaxies reside in galaxy groups, which indicates that the group is the common environment where galaxies evolve. Therefore, it is important to probe how significantly galaxies are affected by group environmental processes, in order to obtain a better understanding of galaxy evolution. We carried out a new CO imaging survey for 31 galaxies in the IC 1459 and NGC 4636 groups, using the Atacama Compact Array, to study the effect of the group environment on the molecular gas properties and the star formation activity. With our resolved CO data, combined with high-resolution H i images, we find asymmetric CO and H i distributions in the group galaxies. Compared to isolated galaxies, group members have relatively low molecular gas fraction and low star formation rate. These results suggest that the group environment can change the properties of cold gas components and star formation in group galaxies.

  • Fluorescein-guided surgery for spinal gliomas : Analysis of 220 consecutive cases
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NOVEL THERAPEUTIC ADVANCES IN GLIOBLASTOMA. - LONDON ENGLAND : Elsevier. - 9780128211144 ; , s. 139-154
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Sodium fluorescein (FL) is widely used as a fluorescent tracer for brain tumor resection. However, FL-guided resection of spinal gliomas has been reported only occasionally. To evaluate the safety, characteristics, and usefulness of FL-guided surgery in the resection of spinal glioma. Methods: Between January 2015 and December 2018, 220 consecutive patients with 227 spinal gliomas underwent FL-guided resection using the Zeiss Pentero 900 surgical microscope with an integrated YELLOW 560 filter. FL evaluation and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: No FL-related complications occurred in this series. Entire tumor fluorescence was observed in 161 (70.93%) gliomas, nodular fluorescence in 46 (20.26%) tumors, and no fluorescence in 20 (8.81%) tumors. The intraoperative fluorescence of 217 (95.59%) gliomas was highly correlated with preoperative contrast-enhancing magnetic resonance imaging, except in eight ependymomas, one pilocytic astrocytoma, and one diffuse midline glioma. Gross-total resection was achieved in 78.85% (179/227) of spinal gliomas, including 94.30% (149/158) ependymal tumors and 43.48% (30/69) astrocytic and oligodendroglial tumors. At the final clinical follow-up, the spinal function of 75 (33.04%) patients showed significant improvement, 105 (46.26%) showed stabilization, and 47 (20.70%) showed deterioration. Conclusion: FL is a safe and useful real-time tool that could enhance tumor borders or residual tumors and hence increase the gross-total resection rate in cases with contrast-enhanced tumors.

  • Selenium deficiency and selenium supplements : biological effects on fibrosisin chronic diseases, from animal to human studies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Handbook of famine, starvation, and nutrient deprivation. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319400075 - 9783319553863 - 9783319553870 - 9783319553887 ; , s. 1911-1930
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Selenium is a trace element, which is required for normal growth and development of animals and humans. It works by incorporating into proteins to make selenoproteins. These selenoproteins help to prevent free radicals from causing cellular damage, which may in turn lead to the development of various chronic diseases. Selenium deficiency, although is rare, can happen when the body does not have enough selenium. This chapter will review systematically the effects of selenium deficiency on fibrosis in various chronic diseases, such as cardiac fibrosis, liver fibrosis, kidney fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, thyroid fibrosis, oral submucous fibrosis, and pancreatic fibrosis in both animal and human studies. Moreover, their prevention and treatment with selenium supplement will be evaluated as well.

  • Variant calling using NGS data in European aspen (Populus tremula)
  • 2015. - 1
  • Ingår i: Advances in the Understanding of Biological Sciences Using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Approaches. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319171562 ; , s. 43-61
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data is rapidly becoming an important source of information for genetics and genomics studies. The utility of such data does, however, rely crucially on the accuracy and quality of SNP and genotype calling. Identification of genetic variants (SNPs and short indels) from NGS data is an area of active research and many recent statistical methods have been developed to both improve and quantify the large uncertainty associated with genotype calling. The detection of genetic variants from NGS data is prone to errors, due to multiple factors such as base-calling, alignment errors and read coverage. Here we highlight some of the issues and review and exemplify some of the recent methods that have been developed for genotype calling. We also provide guidelines for their application to whole-genome re-sequencing data using a data set based on a number of European aspen (Populus tremula) individuals each sequenced to a depth of about 20x coverage per individual.
