The text reflects the state as of 1 January 2018.

    • The Chinese government has been promoting the anaerobic treatment technology not only for pollution control but also for bioenergy recovery. Millions of decentralized anaerobic digesters have been built using animal manure and crop stalk as feedstock to improve the sanitary conditions and to produce biogas for heating and lighting for farmers and rural communities. Also, there are 22,570 medium to large sized anaerobic projects built for centralized animal manure treatment. In addition, over 2,000 medium to large anaerobic systems have been installed since 2000s for the treatment of industrial wastewaters including alcohol, starch, pulp and paper using technologies such as CSTR, UASB, EGSB, IC, etc. Overall, more than 25,100 medium to large sized anaerobic systems are now in operation in rural China, producing annually 7.5x109 m3 of biogas. Based on Chinese government’s 12th Five-Year Plan, biogas output will reach 21x109 m3 by 2020 from treatment of industrial wastewater, poultry wastes, municipal wastes and wastewater sludge; this amount will double by 2050. This Chapter is to summarize the development of anaerobic technology in China in the countryside as well as in industrial wastewater treatment. A number of case studies are present.

  • The Impact of the Group Environment on the Molecular Gas and Star Formation Activity

    • At least half of the local galaxies reside in galaxy groups, which indicates that the group is the common environment where galaxies evolve. Therefore, it is important to probe how significantly galaxies are affected by group environmental processes, in order to obtain a better understanding of galaxy evolution. We carried out a new CO imaging survey for 31 galaxies in the IC 1459 and NGC 4636 groups, using the Atacama Compact Array, to study the effect of the group environment on the molecular gas properties and the star formation activity. With our resolved CO data, combined with high-resolution H i images, we find asymmetric CO and H i distributions in the group galaxies. Compared to isolated galaxies, group members have relatively low molecular gas fraction and low star formation rate. These results suggest that the group environment can change the properties of cold gas components and star formation in group galaxies.

    • Modelling and Simulation (M&S) are critical capabilities for Cloud Computing. M&S products and services are valuable resources that have to be easily accessible and available on demand in a cost-effective way to users; they provide the required level of agility so that capabilities can be integrated quickly and easily. To address new design and manufacturing challenges in Industry 4.0, digital-driven technologies use simulation tools, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Extended Reality (XR) services to support digital design and information flow throughout a product lifecycle. Thus, XR creates new business value by improving the customer journey, optimizing employee performance, and developing new content and services. The vision of Modelling and Simulation as a Service (MSaaS) aims to make products, data, and processes easily accessible and available on-demand to all users to improve operational effectiveness. The scope of this essay is to provide a comprehensive vision of MSaaS for products, data, and processes in combination with XR services to improve operational effectiveness under the framework of Industry 4.0.

    • Sustainable management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has attracted escalating concerns of researchers and industries. Closer information linking among the participants in the products' lifecycle should take place. How to interoperate among the distributed and heterogeneous information systems of various participants is a challenge faced. Targeting the cloud-based remanufacturing, this article aims to develop a semantic information services framework for sustainable WEEE management. In the proposed framework, an ontology-based approach is developed to integrate and represent the lifecycle information from multiple local data sources within an information services provider. Meanwhile, a semantic information services management platform is introduced for the advertisement, matchmaking, and retrieval of semantic information services. Some relevant techniques used to build the framework are introduced extensively. A demonstration case study on waste LCD TV is used to illustrate the effectiveness and significance of the proposed framework.

    • Advances in next-generation sequencing methods and the development of new statistical and computational methods have opened up possibilities for large-scale, high-quality genotyping in most organisms. Conifer genomes are large and are known to contain a high fraction of repetitive elements and this complex genome structure has bearings for approaches that aim to use next-generation sequencing methods for genotyping. In this chapter, we provide a detailed description of a workflow for variant calling using next-generation sequencing in Norway spruce (Picea abies). The workflow starts with raw sequencing reads and proceeds through read mapping to variant calling and variant filtering. We illustrate the pipeline using data derived from both whole-genome resequencing data and reduced representation sequencing. We highlight possible problems and pitfalls of using next-generation sequencing data for genotyping stemming from the complex genome structure of conifers and how those issues can be mitigated or eliminated.

    • BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that exogenous application of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) reduced 6-hydroxydopamine-mediated neurodegeneration in a rodent model of Parkinson's disease. The purpose of this study is to examine the endogenous neurotrophic properties of BMP Receptor II in dopaminergic neurons of the nigrostriatal pathway. METHODS: Adult male BMPRII dominant negative (BMPRIIDN) mice and their wild type controls (WT) were placed in the activity chambers for 3 days to monitor locomotor activity. Animals were sacrificed for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining. A subgroup of BMPRIIDN and WT mice were injected with high doses of methamphetamine (MA) and were sacrificed for terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) histochemistry at 4 days after injection. RESULTS: BMPRIIDN mice had lower locomotor activity than the WT. There is a significant decrease in TH neuronal number in substantia nigra compacta, TH fiber density in the substantia nigra reticulata, and TH immunoreactivity in striatum in the BMPRIIDN mice, suggesting that deficiency in endogenous BMP signaling reduces dopaminergic innervation and motor function in the nigrostriatal pathway. Administration of MA increased TUNEL labeling in the substantia nigra in the BMPRIIDN mice. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous BMPs have trophic effects on nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Deficiency in BMP signaling increases vulnerability to insults induced by high doses of MA.

    • Abstract This chapter describes key challenges that must be faced to turn long-term evolution (LTE) into a suitable technology for machine-to-machine (M2M) and machine-type communications (MTC). In particular, the challenges dealt with in this chapter relate to managing a large number of devices, attaining very low energy consumption, ensuring low-complexity protocols to bring down the cost of devices, and extending coverage to facilitate one-hop transmissions. Beyond being technically feasible, network operators must adopt network optimization; therefore, a techno-economic perspective is presented in this chapter as well. Business-related requirements and implications that emerge from the traffic mix between humans and machines are covered, including scalability and deployment cost issues, as well as migration options from current solutions.

    • This chapter focuses on skeleton detection for clinical evaluation of blood vessel systems. In clinical evaluation, there is a need for fast and accurate segmentation algorithms that can reliably provide vessel measurements and additional information for clinicians to decide the diagnosis.Since blood vessels have a characteristic tubular shape, their segmentation can be accelerated and facilitated by first identifying the rough vessel centerlines, which can be seen as a special case of an image skeleton extraction algorithm. A segmentation algorithm will finally use the resulting skeleton as a seed region during the segmentation. The proposed method takes an unprocessed 3D computed tomography angiography (CTA) scan as an input and generates a connected graph of centrally located arterial voxels. The method works in two levels, where large arteries are captured in the first level, and small arteries are added in the second one. Experimental results show that the method can achieve high overlap rate and acceptable detection rate accuracies. High computational efficiency of the method opens the possibility for an interactive clinical use.
