    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2018 is the sixth annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of over eighty trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis and a “real-time” experiment simulating a situation where a tracker processes images as if provided by a continuously running sensor. A long-term tracking subchallenge has been introduced to the set of standard VOT sub-challenges. The new subchallenge focuses on long-term tracking properties, namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. A new dataset has been compiled and a performance evaluation methodology that focuses on long-term tracking capabilities has been adopted. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term and the new long-term tracking subchallenges. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website (http://votchallenge.net).

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2016 aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 70 trackers are presented, with a large number of trackers being published at major computer vision conferences and journals in the recent years. The number of tested state-of-the-art trackers makes the VOT 2016 the largest and most challenging benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the Appendix. The VOT2016 goes beyond its predecessors by (i) introducing a new semi-automatic ground truth bounding box annotation methodology and (ii) extending the evaluation system with the no-reset experiment.

    • Free space optics is an interesting alternative for telemetry with medical implants, due to the high data bandwidths available at optical frequencies. Especially implanted brain-computer interfaces gives rise to large data sets that needs to be transmitted transcutaneous. In this paper we show that it is possible to establish such a link at near-IR wavelengths using a modulated reflector in the implant, thus keeping the laser and the detector on the outside. In addition, we show that it will not only work on short, i.e. touch, distances but also at larger distances, in the range of a meter. We have used an electro absorption modulator to modulate the reflection of an external laser source back towards an external detector. The only part of this system that needs to be implanted is the modulator and drive electronics. The study has been done both by Monte-Carlo simulations of a multi-layer model of a rat skull, and with an experiment demonstrating the feasibility of the link when transmitted through biological tissue. The results show that it is possible to establish a transcutaneous link with an external laser source and light detector, and an internal modulated reflector.

    • The Detuning Loading Effect, i.e., the effects of the modulation performance on the position of the lasing mode relative to the Bragg reflection peak, is investigated in a Modulated Grating Y-branch laser. By proper adjustment of the lasing mode position, simultaneous chirp reduction and modulation bandwidth enhancement can be obtained. The lasing mode position is also crucial for side mode suppression ratio and output power.

    • In this work, we introduce a novel approach for designing the transmit frequency offset scheme based on Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) minimization for a frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar. The problem originates in non-uniform FDA radar where each frequency offset scheme derives from a specific mathematical model, but where no optimization is conducted with respect to the frequency offset design. We propose two frequency selection schemes for FDA-MIMO radar based on A-optimal minimization, both incorporating a priori knowlegdge. The worst case optimal FDA-MIMO (OFDA-MIMOW) radar forms the frequency selection by minimizing the CRLB over a grid of the unknown parameters, whereas the Bayesian optimal FDA-MIMO (OFDA-MIMO-B) radar instead minimizes the Bayesian CRLB (BCRLB). The performances of the methods are evaluated using simulated data and compared to other common frequency selection schemes.

  • The C3PO project : A laser communication system concept for small satellites

    • The satellite market is shifting towards smaller (micro and nanosatellites), lowered mass and increased performance platforms. Nanosatellites and picosatellites have been used for a number of new, innovative and unique payloads and missions. This trend requires new concepts for a reduced size, a better performance/weight ratio and a reduction of onboard power consumption. In this context, disruptive technologies, such as laser-optical communication systems, are opening new possibilities. This paper presents the C3PO1 system, "advanced Concept for laser uplink/ downlink CommuniCation with sPace Objects", and the first results of the development of its key technologies. This project targets the design of a communications system that uses a ground-based laser to illuminate a satellite, and a Modulating Retro-Reflector (MRR) to return a beam of light modulated by data to the ground. This enables a downlink, without a laser source on the satellite. This architecture suits well to small satellite applications so as high data rates are potentially provided with very low board mass. C3PO project aims to achieve data rates of 1Gbit/s between LEO satellites and Earth with a communication payload mass of less than 1kilogram. In this paper, results of the initial experiments and demonstration of the key technologies will be shown.

    • A dedicated front-end for biofeedback neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NESM) system is proposed. For controllable dysphagia treatment, the integrated circuit (IC) provides a stimulator front-end with programmable stimulation parameters (2μA-1mA current amplitude, DC-2KHz frequency, and variable duty cycle) and an electromyogram/impedance (EMG/ETI) readout front-end with programmable gain and bandwidth (42-80dB, 0.1Hz-1.2KHz) for biofeedback. Area-efficient, low-power but high precision current controlling is achieved by inducing the sigma-delta modulator technique in the stimulation channel. The measured impedance and EMG signal are used to determine the stimulation parameters, enabling a closed loop optimized treatment. The proposed front-end is fabricated in a 0.18 μm standard CMOS process technology and dissipates a peak power of 2.3 mW at the supply voltage of 1.8 V. Measurement results on a live person are also provided to validate the system's effectiveness.

    • We report on a quantum dots-in-a-well infrared photodetector (DWELL QDIP) grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. The DWELL QDIP consisted of ten stacked InAs/In0.5Ga0.85As/GaAs QD layers embedded between n-doped contact layers. The density of the QDs was about 9 × 10 10 cm-2 per QD layer. The energy level structure of the DWELL was revealed by optical measurements of interband transitions, and from a comparison with this energy level scheme the origin of the photocurrent peaks could be identified. The main intersubband transition contributing to the photocurrent was associated with the quantum dot ground state to the quantum well excited state transition. The performance of the DWELL QDIPs was evaluated regarding responsivity and dark current for temperatures between 15 K and 77 K. The photocurrent spectrum was dominated by a LWIR peak, with a peak wavelength at 8.4 μm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.1 μm. At an operating temperature of 65 K, the peak responsivity was 30 mA/W at an applied bias of 4 V and the dark current was 1.2×10-5 A/cm2. Wavelength tuning from 8.4 μm to 9.5 μm was demonstrated, by reversing the bias of the detector.

    • In this study, bias mediated tuning of the detection wavelength within the infrared wavelength region is demonstrated for quantum dots-in-a-well (DWELL) infrared photodetectors. In DWELL structures, intersubband transitions in the conduction band occur from a discrete state in the quantum dot to a subband inthe quantum well. Compared to "conventional" quantum dot infrared photodetectors, where the transitions take place between different discrete bands in thequantum dots, new possibilities to tune the detection wavelength window are opened up, partly by varying the quantum dot energy levels and partly by adjusting the width and composition of the quantum well. In the DWELL structure used, an asymmetric positioning of the InAs quantum dot layer in a 8 nm wide In0.15Ga0.85As/GaAs QW has been applied which enables tuning of the peak detection wavelength within the long wavelength infrared (LWIR; 8 - 14 gm) region. When the applied bias was reversed, a wavelength shift from 8.5 to 9.5 mu m was observed for the peak position in the spectral response. For another DWELL structure, with a well width of 2 nm, the tuning range of the detector could be shifted from the medium wavelength infrared (MWIR; 3-5 mu m) region to the LWIR region. With small changes in the applied bias, the peak detection wavelength could be shifted from 5.1 to 8 mu m. These tuning properties ofDWELL structures could be essential for applications such as modulators and two-colour infrared detection. © (2008) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
