  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Asymmetric epoxidation of styrene and chromenes catalysed by dimeric chiral (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) complexes
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Catalysis A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-860X .- 1873-3875. ; 315, s. 120-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two dimeric chiral (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) complexes 3 and 4 were prepared, in which the two (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) units are linked either by a p-xylylene or by ap-phthalyl bridge. High yields were attained for asymmetric epoxidation of styrene and substituted chromenes at 0.5-4.0 mol% catalyst loading of 3 and 4 using NaClO/PPNO and m-CPBA/NMO as oxidant systems, with 37-39% ee for styrene and 86-95% ee for substituted chromenes. Dimeric complexes 3 and 4 displayed higher activities than their parent monomeric complexes 1 and 2 of double equiv for epoxidation of substituted chromenes. Complex 3 bearing two tertiary amine units displayed considerably higher activity than analogous dimeric complex 4 containing two carboxamide units in the aforementioned reaction. The effect of excess CH3I on the epoxidation of 6-nitro-2,2-dimethylchromene catalysed by 3 in the aqueous/organic biphasic medium was explored. The recovery and recycling possibilities of the dimeric complexes 3 and 4 were studied.

  • Influence of the built-in pyridinium salt on asymmetric epoxidation of substituted chromenes catalysed by chiral (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) complexes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Catalysis A. - : Elsevier BV. - 1381-1169 .- 1873-314X. ; 270:02-jan, s. 278-283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chiral (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) complexes 1 with an N-benzoyl group and 2 with an N-isonicotinoyl group as well as the corresponding N-methyl (3) and N-benzyl (4) pyridinium salts of 2 were synthesized. The catalytic properties of 1-4 and 2 with excess CH3I were explored to figure out the influence of the internal pyridinium salt in the catalyst on asymmetric epoxidation of substituted chromenes with NaClO/PPNO as an oxidant system in the aqueous/organic biphasic medium. The (pyrrolidine salen)Mn(III) complexes with an internal pyridinium salt, either formed in situ or isolated, displayed higher activities than analogous complexes 1, 2 and Jacobsen's catalyst in the aforementioned reaction, with comparable high yields and ee values. The acceleration of the reaction rate is attributed to the phase transfer capability of the built-in pyridinium salt of the (salen)Mn(III) catalyst. The effect of the internal pyridinium salt on the epoxidation of substituted chromenes is similar to that of the external pyridinium salts and ammonium halides.

  • Boosting the performance of perovskite solar cells through a novel active passivation method
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 6:32, s. 15853-15858
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Potassium halides have recently garnered much attention, due to their improvement of perovskite solar cell performance. A small amount of potassium halide incorporated in a perovskite absorber is able to provide advantages in terms of crystallinity, light absorption and trap state reduction. Here, we present a potassium chloride (KCl) pretreatment process to fabricate high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A KCl layer was inserted at the SnO2/MAPbI(3-x)Cl(x) interface via a simple spin coating method. It is observed that potassium cations (K+) and chloride anions (Cl-) diffused into the perovskite film during the thermal annealing process. The diffusion of K+ and Cl- will stop when they reach a bulk defect, resulting in an active passivation effect. It is verified that the incorporation of KCl enhances the crystal perfection and light absorption of the perovskite film. The average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs increases from 16.62% to 17.81%, with a leading PCE of 19.44%.

  • Temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystal
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 111:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals are investigated. The dynamic current-time measurement results at different temperatures directly demonstrate that the electrical properties of the perovskite single crystal are dependent on the work temperature. We find that the Poole-Frankel conduction mechanism fits the current-voltage curves at small bias voltage (0-1 V) under darkness, which is mainly attributed to the surface defect states. The capability of carriers de-trapping from defects varies with different work temperatures, resulting in an increased current as the temperature increases under both darkness and illumination. In addition, the different transient photocurrent responses of incident light at two wavelengths (470 nm, 550 nm) further confirm the existence of defect states on the single crystal surface. • Mechanistic study of transcription factor Sox18 during heart development
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: General and Comparative Endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-6480 .- 1095-6840. ; 350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heart development is a delicate and complex process regulated by coordination of various signaling pathways. In this study, we investigated the role of sox18 in heart development by modulating Wnt/β-Catenin signaling pathways. Our spatiotemporal expression analysis revealed that sox18 is mainly expressed in the heart, branchial arch, pharyngeal arch, spinal cord, and intersegmental vessels at the tailbud stage of Xenopus tropicalis embryo. Overexpression of sox18 in the X. tropicalis embryos causes heart edema, while loss-of-function of sox18 can change the signal of developmental heart marker gata4 at different stages, suggesting that sox18 plays an essential role in the development of the heart. Knockdown of SOX18 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells suggests a link between Sox18 and β-CATENIN, a key regulator of the Wnt signaling pathway. Sox18 negatively regulates islet1 and tbx3, the downstream factors of Wnt/β-Catenin signaling, during the linear heart tube formation and the heart looping stage. Taken together, our findings highlight the crucial role of Sox18 in the development of the heart via inhibiting Wnt/β-Catenin signaling.

  • A wide-range operating synaptic device based on organic ferroelectricity with low energy consumption
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2046-2069. ; 8:47, s. 26549-26553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In thiswork, a wide-range operating synaptic device based on organic ferroelectricity has been demonstrated. The device possesses a simple two-terminal structure by using a ferroelectric phase-separated polymer blend as the active layer and gold/indium tin oxide (ITO) as the top/bottom electrodes, and exhibits a distinctive history-dependent resistive switching behavior at room temperature. And the device with low energy consumption (similar to 50 fJ mu m(-2) per synaptic event) can provide a reliable synaptic function of potentiation, depression and the complex memory behavior simulation of differential responses to diverse stimulations. In addition, using simulations, the accuracy of 32 x 32 pixel image recognition is improved from 76.21% to 85.06% in the classical model Cifar-10 with 1024 levels of the device, which is an important step towards the higher performance goal in image recognition based on memristive neuromorphic networks.

  • Aerosol jet printed silver nanowire transparent electrode for flexible electronic application
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 123:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aerosol jet printing technology enables fine feature deposition of electronic materials onto low-temperature, non-planar substrates without masks. In this work, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are proposed to be printed into transparent flexible electrodes using a Maskless Mesoscale Material Deposition Aerosol Jet VR printing system on a glass substrate. The influence of the most significant process parameters, including printing cycles, printing speed, and nozzle size, on the performance of AgNW electrodes was systematically studied. The morphologies of printed patterns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the transmittance was evaluated using an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. Under optimum conditions, high transparent AgNW electrodes with a sheet resistance of 57.68 X/sq and a linewidth of 50.9 mu m were obtained, which is an important step towards a higher performance goal for flexible electronic applications.

  • FPGA-Based HPC for Associative Memory System
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 29TH ASIA AND SOUTH PACIFIC DESIGN AUTOMATION CONFERENCE, ASP-DAC 2024. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 52-57
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Associative memory plays a crucial role in the cognitive capabilities of the human brain. The Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) is a cortex model capable of emulating brain-like cognitive capabilities, particularly associative memory. However, the existing GPU-based approach for BCPNN simulations faces challenges in terms of time overhead and power efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel FPGA-based high performance computing (HPC) design for the BCPNN-based associative memory system. Our design endeavors to maximize the spatial and timing utilization of FPGA while adhering to the constraints of the available hardware resources. By incorporating optimization techniques including shared parallel computing units, hybrid-precision computing for a hybrid update mechanism, and the globally asynchronous and locally synchronous (GALS) strategy, we achieve a maximum network size of 150x10 and a peak working frequency of 100 MHz for the BCPNN-based associative memory system on the Xilinx Alveo U200 Card. The tradeoff between performance and hardware overhead of the design is explored and evaluated. Compared with the GPU counterpart, the FPGA-based implementation demonstrates significant improvements in both performance and energy efficiency, achieving a maximum latency reduction of 33.25x, and a power reduction of over 6.9x, all while maintaining the same network configuration.

  • Memristor-Based In-Circuit Computation for Trace-Based STDP
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 Ieee International Conference On Artificial Intelligence Circuits And Systems (Aicas 2022). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, memristors have been widely used to implement Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which is promising in edge computing scenarios. However, most memristor-based SNN implementations adopt simplified spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) for the online learning process. It is challenging for memristor-based implementations to support the trace-based STDP learning rules that have been widely used in neuromorphic applications. This paper proposed a versatile memristor-based architecture to implement the synaptic-level trace-based STDP learning rules. Especially, the similarity between synaptic trace dynamics and the memristor nonlinearity is explored and exploited to emulate the trace variables of trace-based STDP. As two typical trace-based STDP learning rules, the pairwise STDP and the triplet STDP, are simulated on two typical nonlinear bipolar memristor devices. The simulation results show that the behavior of physical memristor devices can be well estimated (below 6% in terms of the relative root-mean-square error), and the memristor-based in-circuit computation for trace-based STDP learning rules can achieve a high correlation coefficient over 98%.
