  • Silicon fertilization enhances the resistance of tobacco plants to combined Cd and Pb contamination : Physiological and microbial mechanisms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety. - : Elsevier BV. - 0147-6513. ; 255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remediation of soil contaminated with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) is critical for tobacco production. Silicon (Si) fertilizer can relieve heavy metal stress and promote plant growth, however, it remains unknown whether fertilization with Si can mitigate the effects of Cd and Pb on tobacco growth and alter microbial community composition in polluted soils. Here we assessed the effect of two organic (OSiFA, OSiFB) and one mineral Si fertilizer (MSiF) on Cd and Pb accumulation in tobacco plants, together with responses in plant biomass, physiological parameters and soil bacterial communities in pot experiments. Results showed that Si fertilizer relieved Cd and Pb stress on tobacco, thereby promoting plant growth: Si fertilizer reduced available Cd and Pb in the soil by 37.3 % and 28.6 %, respectively, and decreased Cd and Pb contents in the plant tissue by 42.0–55.5 % and 17.2–25.6 %, resulting in increased plant biomass by 13.0–30.5 %. Fertilization with Si alleviated oxidative damage by decreasing malondialdehyde content and increasing peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase content. In addition, Si fertilization increased photosynthesis, chlorophyll and carotenoid content. Microbial community structure was also affected by Si fertilization. Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the dominant phylum in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils, but Si fertilization reduced the abundance of Actinobacteria. Si fertilization also altered microbial metabolic pathways associated with heavy metal resistance. Together, our results suggest that both organic and mineral Si fertilizers can promote tobacco growth by relieving plant physiological stress and favoring a heavy metal tolerant soil microbial community.

  • Analyses of pig genomes provide insight into porcine demography and evolution
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 491:7424, s. 393-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For 10,000 years pigs and humans have shared a close and complex relationship. From domestication to modern breeding practices, humans have shaped the genomes of domestic pigs. Here we present the assembly and analysis of the genome sequence of a female domestic Duroc pig (Sus scrofa) and a comparison with the genomes of wild and domestic pigs from Europe and Asia. Wild pigs emerged in South East Asia and subsequently spread across Eurasia. Our results reveal a deep phylogenetic split between European and Asian wild boars approximately 1 million years ago, and a selective sweep analysis indicates selection on genes involved in RNA processing and regulation. Genes associated with immune response and olfaction exhibit fast evolution. Pigs have the largest repertoire of functional olfactory receptor genes, reflecting the importance of smell in this scavenging animal. The pig genome sequence provides an important resource for further improvements of this important livestock species, and our identification of many putative disease-causing variants extends the potential of the pig as a biomedical model.

  • Improvement of nutritional quality of food crops with fertilizer : a global meta-analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Agronomy for Sustainable Development. - : Springer Nature. - 1774-0746 .- 1773-0155. ; 43:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Providing the world’s population with sufficient and nutritious food through sustainable food systems is a major challenge of the twenty-first century. Fertilizer use is a major driver of crop yield, but a comprehensive synthesis of the effect of fertilizer on the nutritional quality of food crops is lacking. Here we performed a comprehensive global meta-analysis using 7859 data pairs from 551 field experiment-based articles published between 1972 and 2022, assessing the contribution of fertilization with a wide set of plant nutrients to the nutritional quality of food crops (i.e., fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses/oil crops, and sugar crops). On average, fertilizer application improved crop yield by 30.9% (CI: 28.2–33.7%) and nutritional quality (referring to all nutritionally relevant components assessed; carbohydrates, proteins, oil, vitamin C, representative mineral nutrients, and total soluble solids) by 11.9% (CI: 10.7–12.1%). The improvements were largely nutrient- and crop species dependent, with vegetables being the most responsive. Potassium, magnesium, and micronutrients played important roles in promoting crop nutritional quality, whereas the combined application of inorganic and organic source(s) had the greatest impact on quality. Desirable climatic conditions and soil properties (i.e., silt loam, soil organic matter 2.5–5.0%, and pH 4.5–8.5) supported further enhancements. Considering cross-continent responsiveness, the increase in the nutritional quality of food crops with fertilizer application was greatest in Africa. In a nutshell, our findings pave the way towards a quantitative understanding of nutrient management programs and responsible plant nutrition solutions that foster the sustainable production of nutritious and healthy food crops for human consumption.

  • Lipopeptide Biosurfactants from Bacillus spp. : Types, Production, Biological Activities, and Applications in Food
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Food Quality. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0146-9428 .- 1745-4557.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biosurfactants are a functionally and structurally heterogeneous group of biomolecules produced by multiple filamentous fungi, yeast, and bacteria, and characterized by their distinct surface and emulsifying ability. The genus Bacillus is well studied for biosurfactant production as it produces various types of lipopeptides, for example, lichenysins, bacillomycin, fengycins, and surfactins. Bacillus lipopeptides possess a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antitumor, immunosuppressant, and antidiabetic, in addition to their use in skincare. Moreover, Bacillus lipopeptides are also involved in various food products to increase the antimicrobial, surfactant, and emulsification impact. From the previously published articles, it can be concluded that biosurfactants have strong potential to be used in food, healthcare, and agriculture. In this review article, we discuss the versatile functions of lipopeptide Bacillus species with particular emphasis on the biological activities and their applications in food.

  • Structural genomic changes underlie alternative reproductive strategies in the ruff (Philomachus pugnax)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Nature. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 48:1, s. 84-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ruff is a Palearctic wader with a spectacular lekking behavior where highly ornamented males compete for females1,2,3,4. This bird has one of the most remarkable mating systems in the animal kingdom, comprising three different male morphs (independents, satellites and faeders) that differ in behavior, plumage color and body size. Remarkably, the satellite and faeder morphs are controlled by dominant alleles5,6. Here we have used whole-genome sequencing and resolved the enigma of how such complex phenotypic differences can have a simple genetic basis. The Satellite and Faeder alleles are both associated with a 4.5-Mb inversion that occurred about 3.8 million years ago. We propose an evolutionary scenario where the Satellite chromosome arose by a rare recombination event about 500,000 years ago. The ruff mating system is the result of an evolutionary process in which multiple genetic changes contributing to phenotypic differences between morphs have accumulated within the inverted region.

  • Long-Term Phosphorus Addition Strongly Weakens the Carbon Sink Function of a Temperate Peatland
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ecosystems. - : SPRINGER. - 1432-9840 .- 1435-0629. ; 26:1, s. 201-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peatlands are important nutrient-limited, carbon (C)-accumulating ecosystems where phosphorus (P) is one major limiting nutrient. An increase in P input to peatlands has been observed close to agricultural areas. However, the effects of P input on gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER) and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of peatlands, especially in temperate Asia, have been rarely studied. We selected the P addition plots of a 12-year experiment simulating environmental change in a peatland in northeastern China to evaluate the effect of P addition (5 and 10 kg ha(-1) y(-1)) on carbon dioxide fluxes. Our results showed that the growth of Sphagnum was inhibited but that of vascular plants was facilitated by P addition, resulting in an unchanged GPP. P addition increased ER due to the increased activity potentials of N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) and polyphenol oxidase (POX) that might, in turn, increase the metabolic rate of soil microbes and enhance the decomposition of peat. During the growing season, a mean net CO2 absorption of 0.002 mg m(-2) s(-1) was observed at high levels of P addition, which was much lower than that of 0.063 mg m(-2) s(-1) in the controls. The results suggest that long-term P addition will greatly weaken the C sequestration in peatlands by enhancing ER rather than reducing GPP. Our study highlights the importance of the response of vegetation and soil enzyme activities to P addition regarding peatland respiration and C sink function.

  • Macrophage NCOR1 protects from atherosclerosis by repressing a pro-atherogenic PPAR gamma signature
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Heart Journal. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0195-668X .- 1522-9645. ; 41:9, s. 995-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims Nuclear receptors and their cofactors regulate key pathophysiological processes in atherosclerosis development. The transcriptional activity of these nuclear receptors is controlled by the nuclear receptor corepressors (NCOR), scaffolding proteins that form the basis of large corepressor complexes. Studies with primary macrophages demonstrated that the deletion of Ncor1 increases the expression of atherosclerotic molecules. However, the role of nuclear receptor corepressors in atherogenesis is unknown. Methods and results We generated myeloid cell-specific Ncor1 knockout mice and crossbred them with low-density lipoprotein receptor and results (Ldlr) knockouts to study the role of macrophage NCOR1 in atherosclerosis. We demonstrate that myeloid cellspecific deletion of nuclear receptor corepressor 1 (NCOR1) aggravates atherosclerosis development in mice. Macrophage Ncorl-deficiency leads to increased foam cell formation, enhanced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and atherosclerotic lesions characterized by larger necrotic cores and thinner fibrous caps. The immunometabolic effects of NCOR1 are mediated via suppression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) target genes in mouse and human macrophages, which lead to an enhanced expression of the CD36 scavenger receptor and subsequent increase in oxidized low-density lipoprotein uptake in the absence of NCOR1. Interestingly, in human atherosclerotic plaques, the expression of NCOR1 is reduced whereas the PPAR gamma signature is increased, and this signature is more pronounced in ruptured compared with non-ruptured carotid plaques. Conclusions Our findings show that macrophage NCOR1 blocks the pro-atherogenic functions of PPAR gamma in atherosclerosis and suggest that stabilizing the NCOR1-PPAR gamma binding could be a promising strategy to block the pro-atherogenic functions of plaque macrophages and lesion progression in atherosclerotic patients.

  • Interdecadal to Multidecadal Variability of East Asian Summer Monsoon Over the Past Half Millennium
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 127:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) plays a crucial role for ecosystems and societies in East Asia past, present, and future. However, substantial uncertainties remain regarding EASM variability on interdecadal to multidecadal timescales because of the short length of instrumental data in East Asia. This study extended the EASM circulation index in the modern meteorological studies to the paleoclimate over the past half-millennium (1470–1998 CE) to reconcile the understanding of the EASM variability in paleoclimate and modern meteorological studies. The EASM index is reconstructed based on the common signal from the three main types of the proxy records (the tree rings, speleothems, and historical documentary data) related to EASM. The reconstructed EASM index captures the simultaneous changes of the “Meiyu precipitation” and the southwesterly anomalies in South China on interdecadal to multidecadal timescales, which is a dynamic pattern visible and well-documented in the modern meteorology. Analysis of the reconstructed EASM index suggests that the interdecadal to multidecadal EASM variability is closely associated with the Pacific-Japan teleconnection pattern, which acts as a bridge between the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the anomalous anticyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific. It also indicates that the EASM variability over the recent 30 years (1992–2021 CE) falls within the range of natural variability over the past half-millennium.

  • Characteristic value of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) for natural and planted larch in northeast China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Forests. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4907. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The density and modulus of elasticity (MOE) distribution can provide information on the effectiveness of parametric and non-parametric methods in calculating the characteristic value of MOE. In this study, we aim to determine the optimal distribution model of the actual measured data of the lumber. We also estimate the lumber’s MOE characteristic value and compare the difference in density and MOE between natural and planted larch. Approximately 1200 pieces of dimension lumber of 4 m × 140 mm × 40 mm in size, made from larch and planted larch, were obtained, tested, and the corresponding standard MOE value was calculated. Results revealed the 3-parameter Weibull distribution to be optimal in fitting the natural and planted larch distributions. The parametric method proved effective in calculating the characteristic value of both larch groups, with characteristic MOE values of 9.73 kN/mm2 and 8.84 kN/mm2, and characteristic density values of 530 kg/m3 and 460 kg/m3 for natural and planted larch, respectively. Moreover, the MOE and density values followed grades C40 and C35. Thus, the conclusion is that the parametric method should be used to determine these characteristic values for natural and planted larch.
