  • A History of the Surrealist Novel
  • 2023. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A History of the Surrealist Novel offers a rich, long, and elastic historiography of the surrealist novel, taking into consideration an abundance of texts previously left out of critical accounts. Its twenty thematically organized chapters examine surrealist prose texts written in French, English, Spanish, German, Greek, and Japanese, from the emergence of the surrealist movement in the 1920s and 1930s, through the post-war and postmodern periods, and up to the contemporary moment. This approach extends received narratives regarding surrealism's geographical locations and considers its transnational movement and modes of circulation. Moreover, it challenges critical biases that have defined surrealism in predominantly masculine terms, and which tie the movement to the interwar or early post-war years. This book will appeal both to scholars and students of surrealism and its legacies, modernist literature, and the history of the novel.

  • Introducing Mechanically Assisted Cough for Patients with Progressive Neurological Disease : Patient-Physical Therapist Interaction and Physical Therapist Perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Therapy. - : Oxford University Press. - 0031-9023 .- 1538-6724. ; 104:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to explore patient-physical therapist interaction and the physical therapist's experience of the introductory session for mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) device treatment for patients with progressive neurological disease.METHODS: Qualitative content analysis of participant-observation of interaction between patients and physical therapists during 9 MI-E introduction sessions in different clinical care settings and 10 follow-up interviews with 6 physical therapists.RESULTS: The introduction of MI-E emerged as a process of instilling a sense of security in the patient. The process can be described in 4 steps: (1) gain understanding by being responsive to the person's whole life-situation; (2) share knowledge and expectations in a respectful and permissive way; (3) introduce the device in a gentle and reciprocal interactivity; and (4) adapt to home-use in an inclusive dialogue with the patient and their significant others. Physical therapists described a need for assurance to instill a sense of security in the patient, implying a need for confidence, competent peers, guiding yet flexible routines, and emotional support.CONCLUSION: Physical therapists have a need to foster assurance in employing a person-centered approach to make a patient feel secure in the process of introducing MI-E treatment. Multiple modes of professional knowledge were used together with action-based and relational-based ethics to facilitate a person-centered care approach. This seems to be a promising approach for providing good care when introducing MI-E to patients. Further research is needed to explore this from the patient's perspective.IMPACT: This study added to the body of knowledge regarding MI-E treatment in relation to patients. This has direct implication, particularly for inexperienced physical therapists, for informed care for the patient during introduction. Our study also supports that person-centered care should be implemented at all levels of health care to make it possible for physical therapists to practice person-centered care.

  • Fish Migration River Monitoring Plan
  • 2014
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Fish have problems passing the Afsluitdijk Dam that separates the Wadden Sea from Lake IJsselmeer. To re-establish the connectivity and thereby allow fish to pass there is an initiative to build a fishway, the Fish Migration River (FMR), at the Konwerderzand sluice complex. This report proposes a monitoring program to evaluate the functionality of the FMR, but also to monitor passage possibilities through the existing sluices. The goals of the monitoring plan are to estimate 1) The overall passage past the Afsluitdijk dam to and from Lake IJsselmeer, 2) The attraction efficiency, 3) The passage efficiency, and 4) The use of the FMR as habitat and for acclimatization for the transition into freshwater. We present an overview of previous and ongoing monitoring in the area to establish the current state of knowledge. The report also includes a presentation of available and suitable methods for a future monitoring program considering the broad spectra of target fish species, and their abundances. The proposed program includes a description of study design and available techniques and cost-estimates of the monitoring program. The proposed program will target ten species: European eel (aal), flounder (bot), three-spined stickleback (dreidoornige stekelbaars), twait shad (fint), North Sea houting (houting), river lamprey (rieverprik), smelt (spiering), Atlantic salmon (zalm), brown trout (forel) and sea lamprey (zeeprik). The monitoring program includes plans for how to capture, tag and track the study fish using the most suitable tagging techniques. Furthermore, the most optimal sites for installation of automatic data detection stations are identified. The total cost for the proposed project is 3.5 M€ and covers both investments in equipment and costs for personnel. However, if costs for investments in techniques such as RFId-stations and fish counters are excluded, the total cost is reduced to 1 M€ for a program running two years before and four years after the completion of the FMR. The program is considered sufficient to evaluate the FMR at Kornwerederzand from the most important perspectives: the overall passage efficiency and the use of the FMR as habitat. It should be noted that this report is the first step towards a full-scale monitoring program, giving insight into possible methods, study design and associated costs. The next important step will be to develop the program in more detail and to start the initial phase of the monitoring project. We predict that such activities will identify the need for, and the relevance of, a more extensive monitoring program to study the effects of the FMR on a population level and on a large geographical scale.

  • Surrealist women's writing : a critical exploration
  • 2021
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Surrealist women's writing: A critical exploration is the first sustained critical inquiry into the writing of women associated with surrealism. Featuring original essays by leading scholars of surrealism, the volume demonstrates the extent and the historical, linguistic, and culturally contextual breadth of this writing. It also highlights how the specifically surrealist poetics and politics of these writers' work intersect with and contribute to contemporary debates on, for example, gender, sexuality, subjectivity, otherness, anthropocentrism, and the environment.Drawing on a variety of innovative theoretical approaches, the essays in the volume focus on the writing of numerous women surrealists, many of whom have hitherto mainly been known for their visual rather than their literary production. These include Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Kay Sage, Colette Peignot, Suzanne Césaire, Unica Zürn, Ithell Colquhoun, Leonor Fini, Dorothea Tanning, and Rikki Ducornet.

  • Her Story in Partonopeu de Blois : Rereading Byzantine Relations
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates the twelfth-century Old French anonymous romance Partonopeu de Blois in relation to the Greek novel tradition and the Byzantine world. The study focuses on the erotic narrative in the romance and articulations of feminine subjectivity. If we read this text in relation to Byzantine literature, and the Greek novel tradition more generally, we could see new things in the courtly romance. Through the Byzantine relations, the romance constructs room for the female character to be a desiring subject. The two main Byzantine texts that are compared to Partonopeu de Blois are, first, Eumathios Makrembolites’ novel Hysmine and Hysminias, second, the historiographical work the Alexiad, by Anna Komnene, who was a Byzantine princess and historian. Another text of importance is Apuleius’ Cupid and Psyche-tale, found in his Latin novel Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass. Other than these mentioned texts, other ones are discussed in minor scale, such as Theodore Prodromos’ Rhodanthe and Dosikles, Achilles Tatius’ Leukippe and Kleitophon, Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe and Andreas Capellanus’ De Amore. The study is outlined in three analytical chapters, based on different themes: touch, gaze, and voice. In the first chapter, focus is put on erotic narratives. In the second chapter, focus is put on the inscription of a feminine desiring gaze into the rhetorical discourse. In the third chapter, focus is put on the voice, and how speaking is connected to power and desire in the narratives. If we consider twelfth-century Byzantine literature and the Greek novel into our reading of Partonopeu de Blois, we could see forms of feminine agency and power that remain obscure if we do not take them into account. Through this sort of fusion of literary influences, feminine subjectivity is articulated in Partonopeu de Blois, which, I demonstrate, should be seen in relation to feminine voices discernible in the Byzantine literary context as well.

  • "A Feminist Libertarian Aesthetic" : Angela Carter and Surrealism
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study examines the intersection of surrealism and feminism in the writing of Angela Carter. Tracing the full extent to which Carter’s writing was influenced by surrealist aesthetics and politics, it reveals the way in which her growing discontent with the movement’s gender politics gave critical content to her own feminist poetics. Surrealism, as a direct influence on her writing and as an integral part of her feminism, is shown to have remained a crucial element in Carter’s literary project as a whole. This study also extends critical feminist debates on surrealism more broadly in order to explore both the limits and the possibilities for feminism in reclaiming the representation of women and female desire. As a first step, chapter 1 elucidates the central presence in surrealism of the figure of woman and outlines key feminist responses to this figure. Carter’s early influence by, and subsequent critique of, surrealism is then situated in the context of this debate. Chapter 2 shows how – at the beginning of her literary career – Carter adopted a surrealist iconography of violence in order to produce both estrangement and shock, the effect of which is double-edged. While her writing at this stage aimed to challenge prescribed notions of femininity, it simultaneously uncritically made use of – and perpetuated – arguably misogynist surrealist imagery of gendered violence. Chapter 3 traces the subsequent shift in Carter’s writing towards a more overt use of surrealist iconography, at the same time as she began to formulate a more distinctly feminist critique of surrealist representations of women. Chapter 4 argues that Carter’s ensuing translation of Xavière Gauthier’s path-breaking study Surréalisme et sexualité is to be considered as a major reference point in Carter’s feminism. Furthermore, it argues that Gauthier’s study should be read as a companion piece to Carter’s polemic The Sadeian Woman. Lastly, chapter 5 investigates Carter’s fictional response to both Gauthier’s text and surrealism, and suggests that this response – both a critique and a celebration of surrealism – constitutes a renewal of surrealism itself.

  • Angela Carter and surrealism : a feminist libertarian aesthetic
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 1972, Angela Carter translated Xavière Gauthier’s ground-breaking feminist critique of the surrealist movement, Surréalisme et sexualité (1971). Although the translation was never published, the project at once confirmed and consolidated Carter’s previous interest in surrealism, representation, gender and desire and aided her formulation of a new surrealist-feminist aesthetic. Carter’s sustained engagement with surrealist aesthetics and politics as well as surrealist scholarship aptly demonstrates what is at stake for feminism at the intersection of avant-garde aesthetics and the representation of women and female desire. Drawing on previously unexplored archival material, such as typescripts, journals, and letters, Anna Watz’s study is the first to trace the full extent to which Carter’s writing was influenced by the surrealist movement and its critical heritage. Watz’s book is an important contribution to scholarship on Angela Carter as well as to contemporary feminist debates on surrealism, and will appeal to scholars across the fields of contemporary British fiction, feminism, and literary and visual surrealism.
